Labor and Delivery Nurse Careers are what keeps us all motivated, pondering what it is, and how it will benefit us. People can typically decide on a career later in life, after experiencing the world and how our morals and passions come into play throughout our lives. Some on the other hand, have almost a natural desire on what they would like to become, and start right from there. It could be the possible influence of family members, icons, or it can simply just feel right. This drive to find a stable career is what most people spend their lives searching for. Although there are many careers out in our world, I have a personal interest in nursing and the medical field, although I would love to be a nurse practitioner, I have decided to wander into my other possible choice of career. Taking care of others is something I have found passion in, but one thing I mostly enjoy our kids, and to care for a mother and her newborn baby would play right into those two goals, with this, I have decided to do my paper and …show more content…
Being a new nurse would be ideal for this kind of nursing as its very fast paced and long shifts are required. “the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field to grow at a rate of 16 percent through 2024, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.” (Nurse, Resources). This percentage is comforting, and would play a huge role in my choice of career, but also a lot of healthcare professions are almost always in demand as there are retirees and people leaving all the time. A general idea of how much a labor and delivery nurse makes is similar to a Registered nurse and will fall into the $67,490 range. This is roughly what I am hoping to make yearly and would be very content with the life this kind of money could provide of myself and my future
After all the research I would still like to be a neonatal nurse. I am really interested in this job so I think I will stick with it. I like taking care of babies, they are so much fun.
Also, you wouldn't have to stay in one location as you could pursue this job anywhere, in many different buildings, and go into any part of the medical study you wish. Finally, getting the job and getting a steady income would never be an issue seeing as anywhere you will make an above average income and since they are in high demand and would never have a problem getting a job. After seeing my own personal nurse practitioner for many years, she has stated many times how much she loves her job and thought it was a great idea when I told her I was going to study to be one. I now know that it is a great idea for a career choice, too.
When I am older I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner, I enjoy helping people when they are sick and taking care of them. Another reason I want to be a Nurse Practitioner is because my sister is also a Nurse Practitioner.
“The median annual pay for a nurse practitioner was $96,460 in May of 2012, which comes to $46.37 per hour” (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012). Of course not all people in this field will make that much, half make less than that and half make more. The job outlook for this occupation is exemplary; “employment in this field is expected to grow 31 percent from 2012-2022” (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012). This actually happens to be much faster than the average of all occupations.
Imagine having a job that helps guide mothers during their process of bringing new life into the world. Imagine being one of the reasons a new life was brought into the world. Labor and Delivery nurses are responsible for being a good support system to women experiencing childbirth. L & D nurses help guide mothers through labor before and after the birth of their newborn(s). Due to my fascination in helping mothers bringing new life into the world, I have chosen to attend Germanna Community College and continue my education at the University of Virginia in order to pursue my career as a registered nurse specializing in labor and delivery.
Nurses today are the backbone of the medical field. The knowledge that was required to become a nurse in the past would no longer be enough in the medical field today. Nurses in today’s society have a much more extensive knowledge in practicing medicine. Doctors rely heavily on nurses for assistance with many different tasks, such as taking a patient’s blood pressure to assisting during surgery. Although a nurse can qualify to do many different jobs within the medical field, there are some who specialize in a certain area. One area of specialty that many nurses go into is neonatal nursing. Neonatal nursing may not be for everyone, but it is a rewarding profession.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). The word family cannot be described or translated by one single universal definition. Different people have different views and meanings as to what a family means to them, but however different all families share similar characteristics. The Oxford Dictionary describes a family as a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household of common descent (2014). However, in today's society, families are evolving and changing in the way that is much different than the traditional nuclear family. As noted by NY Times, in today's society a family can be comprised of a single mother or father, gay/lesbian couple, couples that are unmarried and living together with their children, inter-racial marriages and couples, raising kids from behind bars (incarcerated) and even going from friends to caretakers (Angier, 2013). The term family in today's society is so dynamic, and it is the responsibility of all obstetric nurses to understand the changing family dynamic to be able to assess and determine if the proper care can be given to a newborn based on the education level, psychosocial status, welfare and support of the patient so that the newborn can grow up in an optimal environment with their new family.
Caring for others being my first reason for this job leads to a second reason and being financially stable is very important. In 2014, the median pay in Northern Virginia for a nurse practitioner was $104,740. (“Testing & Education Reference Center”). Having this money will help me to be a successful and independent adult, and with this money, I will be able to not just receive but give to less

Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.
“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival” (Aristotle, n.d.)
