Today it seems the world is branched into distinct categories. From the type of phone I hold in my hand, the brand of cereal I eat, the blood in my body, and the clothes I wear, everything has its label. Recently, I have been confronting the concept of labels in society. Labeling an individual or group can be destructive. Labels alter opinions, contour perceptions, and shape reality. A label lingers far beyond first glance. Labels become our definition and identity if we allow them. My freshman year of high school, I enlisted in the International Academy, an intense preparation for the diploma program that would begin junior year. The vast majority of the students in the academy had originated from TAG, the Talented and Gifted Program. They were exception, while I was ordinary. My parents, who have always believed me to be an outstanding student, stumbled across the International Baccalaureate program offered by my school. I was reluctant at first, but my parents’ encouragement and the undeniable achievements by prior students in the program persuaded me. I was more than intrigued by the challenge ahead and the principles of the program . I thought I would never be able to compete. I wrestled with this thought for the entire first semester. I was overflowing with doubt and depleted of self confidence. This of course, derailed my learning. I was hesitant to ask questions let alone participate in class.
