INTRODUCTION
Andragogy is the process of teaching adults that is on some assumptions how and what adults think and learn differently. Self-direction is one of the assumptions Malcolm Knowles mentioned (Knowles, 1984). It is said adults learn well when they are self-directed. The second assumption is that adults have variety of experiences upon which they learn from (Knowles, 1984). The third assumption is the development in adult role is important in order to encourage adults to learn (Knowles, 1984). It can point out what is important and not important to learn for an adult. A short story by Patricia Preciado Martin (1996, p. 57-61) titled La Tortillera is an excellent instance on how both race and gender determines what is appropriate for a Latina to learn. For Latin culture, a woman and a mum must know how to make tortilla for her family. A certain Ms. Martin is being taught how to make a tortilla severally which she finds very frustrating not because she cannot get it right but because it constantly reminded her she was inadequate as a Latin woman and …show more content…

This assumption looks at Sandlin’s (2005) notion that the theory looks at generic learners. Both men and women have variety of reasons why they want to learn a particular thing. E.g. As an instructor it is important to pay attention to those you are training.
Secondly, adults being around for a longer period of time does not mean they learn from experiences. Some experiences aren’t capable to teach a lesson or more to the adult. Also, it isn’t everybody that is interested in remembering an experience or views it as a way to learn something from. This assumption integrate the disapproval that andragogy only looks at learning from experience (Sandlin, 2005).
Thirdly, Adults as well as they learn to create new skills needed for a role but also look at a need within their community. This assumption looks at some of the issues brought up by Lee (2003) and Sandlin (2005) that it ignores the social structure entirely even if it encourages inequality. Sometimes new skills might be needed in order to take on a new role. In some situations, an adult can identify difficulties in the environment and undergo a learning process to tackle the problem by looking for a solution to it.
