Just like we all dwell in our various relationships, the movie la la land highlights the struggle we go through in overcoming communication obstacles in our daily life. Our behaviour and various interaction at each stage in our relationship really matter in establishing a solid bond. La La Land tells the story of Mia, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, an enthusiastic jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in Hollywood, the movie explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams. Sebastian intends to do his part to preserve

that tradition of jazz music, particularly as he knows that that genre of music is dying. His dream is to open his own jazz club. Partly because of their individual struggles and partly because of the situations, their initial couple of chance meetings were hostile ones. But in due course become attracted to each other largely because of the passion each sees in the other for what they are both striving for in life. However, there are many obstacles to Mia and Sebastian’s future. They may be able to endure the life of a struggling artist for so long before those struggles take their toll. The pursuit of their individual dreams took a toll on them, with nothing left for their relationship. Ultimately the compromise each person made in getting ahead in their pursuit of success changed the person with whom each has fallen in love with. This paper will analyse the effective communication process used in the relationship between the two major characters in the movie La La Land. We highlight the relationship process and effective use of communication used by Mia and Sebastian; we talk about the interaction stages they pass through, Self-Disclosure, what communication behaviour they exhibit, the factors involving in binding the two characters together, the way perception affects their relationship, and conflict between the two characters. Perception is defined as the processing, interpreting, selecting and organising of information. Perception's effect on the communication process is all about how the same message can be interpreted differently by different people. Self-Disclosure is simply the communication of information about oneself to someone else, which influences perception. As we all know people feel a sense of closeness to others who reveal their vulnerabilities, innermost thoughts, and facts about themselves. The sense of closeness increases if the disclosure is emotional rather than factual while personal disclosures that are too general reduce the sense of openness, thus reducing the feeling of closeness. In La la land the two focus characters Mia and Sebastian self-disclosed information about each other i.e.
when Sebastian went to Mia’s workplace and he took her out. on their way, Sebastian started to ask questions about her and the things she likes; he asked her about who she is currently seeing and she tells him how long they have been dating for. they talk about their professions, Sebastian tells her how much he loves jazz music and how his dream is to own a jazz club. he tells her about a place that was formerly a jazz club but turned to a samba tapas place now. She also tells him how she fell in love with acting and how she and her cousin will always reenact scenes from movies in her room. she also tells him that she should have been a lawyer but she left school to pursue her dream as an actress. She then tells him she hates jazz and he gets so disturbed at that statement and decides to take her to a jazz club to explain the interesting fact about jazz …show more content…
music. Relationships often develop through a series of stages; the initial stage Contact where the people involved become aware of each other’s existence. This may be very brief and very distant. It could be formal, e.g. at a workplace, or informal, such as seeing a person at the transit centre. In this next stage, “Involvement”, the people engage more with one another, forming a light bond of friendship. The communication becomes more frequent and the balance of giving and receiving is maintained. A sense of mutuality develops such that when they both see each other, they demonstrate pleasant feelings towards one another. At this point, the relationship is at its deepest and most committed stage. This stage is subdivided into three categories: personal commitment, interpersonal commitment, and social bonding. This next stage is known as the Deterioration stage, here as the relationship progresses, and reality sets in, various problems might arise which in turn test the commitment that each person has for one another. The Repair stage is when the harm is done, but all hopes are not necessarily lost, if the people want the relationship to continue then there is chance or avenue for repair. The last stage which is known as the Dissolution stage is when they both cut their bonds (or perhaps return to a more platonic level). In La la land Mia and Sebastian’s contact stage was sort of informal, the first time they meet was in traffic Sebastian was honking at her to drive because she got carried away in while driving and was pissed at her the next time she saw him was at a lounge where he was playing the piano she fell in love with his playing at that moment she wanted to talk to him after he was done but Sebastian walked out on her because he pissed at the owner of the restaurant who just sacked him because he wasn’t playing the kind of music he was asked to.
Later, she met him at a pool party where he was playing with a band, she walked up to the band and requested that they play a song and then he recognised her, from here they started to build a relationship they finally got to talk and get a sense of each other at the party. The progression from their contact stage to involvement stage of their relationship was quick, they both started to Self-Disclose information about each other at the party but their self-disclosure was mild, next day he went to her workplace then took her on a walk, there was more self-disclosure, he then asked her on a date to the movies, this was where their relationship progressed from involvement stage to the intimacy stage because the both shared some intimate moment. She allowed him to kiss her, from that moment they started dating and were committed to each other, their deterioration stage happened when Sebastian got a steady job as a pianist for a popular pop
band which does a lot of touring, she started to get tired of his absence and he was also trying his best to be with her too but it wasn’t really working out, she also got pissed off at him because she knows he doesn’t enjoy playing for the band because they don’t play his genre of music, she wanted him to pursue his dream, which was to own a jazz club but he taught he was making Mia happy since he had a good paying and steady job which let him provide for the both of them, he was really angry when he found out she didn’t like that he kept on playing for the band and wasn’t following his dream, he yelled at her and she walked out of his house angrily. The repair stage of their relationship was when Sebastian went on to plead with her after realising that she wanted the best for him, but it was sort of late by then because she got tired of the Hollywood disappointment and wanted to leave the city and go back to her hometown in Nevada. After trying to heal the relationship which didn’t work out Sebastian went looking for her to tell her she got an audition, he took her to the audition where she was finally offered a movie role which would be shot in France for a period of seven month, but by the end of the shoot after a period of time she was married to someone else and had a kid too. At this stage, the relationship had been dissolved without Sebastian knowing. Interpersonal conflict is a disagreement between two or more individuals involving significant resentment and displeasure. Conflict resolution or conflict management strategies could encompass finding different ways to reduce feelings of resentment and displeasure. For example, helping people to see things from the other person's standpoint In this movie, after the deteriorating stage of the two character, Sebastian tried to resolving the conflict between the couple admitting that he was wrong and that she should give him the opportunity to make it up to her Sebastian was ultimately using the accommodating conflict style in trying to repair the relationship. Sebastian also employed facilitating open expression strategy to manage the conflict between them he let Mia express herself and listened actively to what she had to say and expressed appreciation of how she feels. he told mia that he had been wrong the whole time and she was correct and he needed to follow his dream of opening his own jazz club. In conclusion, This paper talks about how perception, self-disclosure, relationship stages and conflict management is important in managing communication in a relationship and ultimately in our daily lives. This was done in other to prove that the effective communication process used in the relationship between the two major characters in the movie La La Land such as the interaction stages they pass through, Self-Disclosure, what communication behaviour they exhibit, the factors involving in binding the two characters together, the way perception affects their relationship, and conflict between the two characters, which are important tools that could help us sustain our respective relationships. Hopefully, we can all learn from the trial and tribulation sustained by Mia and Sebastian in the movie La la land. Work Cited

The book defines communication as a message one person sends and another receives. (Intimate Relationships, Marriages & Families, 2011) I refer communication with the film because there were a lot of instances where issues could have been resolved if the family was able to communicate better. There were moments where the characters could have felt that they were communicating, but they might not have been doing so effectively. Some good examples were Miriam complaining about things not getting done around the house or complaining about Rodolfo wage not being enough. Rodolfo heard her complains but did not care to take action because of the way that Miriam was communicating her wants or needs. With this scenario Miriam got Rodolfo into combative listening. He didn’t care to take action into her complains as he felt she didn’t work and the little money extra they had she would spend it going out with her friends. In return this would make the situation worse because Miriam would feel as if her feelings were being ignored when the communication was not being addressed right. Towards the end of the movie when they both want the relationship to work they listen and communicate more effectively about their wants and needs. With the ability to work on their listening and communication skills as well as having more empathy for each other Miriam and Rodolfo were able to give their relationship
The Notebook (Cassavetes, 2004) is a love story about a young couple named Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun, who fall deeply in love with each other. The Hamilton’s are financially stable, and expect for their daughter Allie to marry someone with the same wealth. Noah on the other hand works as a laborer, and comes from an underprivileged family. Throughout the film there were several negative behaviors, and interpersonal communications within the context of their relationship, which relates to chapter nine. This chapter explores relationships, emphasizing on affection and understanding, attraction, and the power of a relationship. The focus of this paper is the interpersonal conflict with Noah, Allie and her mother, Anne Hamilton.
The film Friday Night Lights, directed by Peter Berg explains a story about a small town in Odessa, Texas that is obsessed to their high school football team (Permian Panthers) to the point where it’s strange. Boobie Miles (Derek Luke) is an cocky, star tailback who tore his ACL in the first game of the season and everyone in the town just became hopeless cause their star isn’t playing for a long time. The townspeople have to now rely on the new coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton), to motivate the other team members to be able to respect, step up their game, and improve quickly. During this process, racism has made it harder to have a success and be happy and the team has to overcome them as a family.
Looking back and forth on her childhood and adolescence in Puerto Rico and New Jersey, it is narrated in a contemporary voice, but also in part her childhood voice. The movie and memories focus on the influence of her father, even from a distance, and the role of women in society.
Sankofa filmed and directed by Hallie Gerima in 1993 explores the past in which African Americans were brought over as slaves and what they endured while there. In the movie, the main character Mona who is also portrayed as Shola, goes to Ghana for a photoshoot where she encounters the “village protector” Sankofa. Sankofa sees Mona and notices she is very first worldly, she’s wearing makeup and a blonde wig. While noting that she has lost her roots he approaches her to remind her to remember where she came from. Soon after she is jolted into a spiritual time travel back to the past where she experiences the life of those who lived in Ghana at the time of slavery. Mona who then takes on the role of Shola is taken though the experiences of traveling to the states, being branded, and mistreated by the master. Once at the plantation she takes us on a journey through the life of the individuals on the plantation as well as well as her own.
Before the civil rights movement could begin, a few courageous individuals had to guide the way. Dr. Vernon Johns was one of those individuals. Dr. Vernon Johns was a pastor and civil rights activist in the 1920s. Johns became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in the late 1940s. During his time as a pastor, Johns preached many sermons on how African American people were being treated not only in the community but in society. Johns on multiple occasions upset his community through his ideas on social change. Through a sociologist perspective, many sociological concepts were displayed in The Vernon Johns Story. Some of those concepts included: ascribed status, conflict theory, deviant behavior, alienation, and
“I’ve never been on a baseball field, if I did, the kids in my neighborhood would spit loogies on my forehead.” (Clark Reedy, benchwarmers) Clark is one of the main antagonist in the movie “Benchwarmers” along with a few other nerds. This movie shows that no matter if any person is popular their dreams can still be full filled. I highly recommend this movie to all because it's enjoyable to watch and shows how the importance of real friendship. “Benchwarmers” shows the difference between Gus Mathews, Richie Goodman, Clark reedy, and Mel Carmichael.
The story in the film "La La Land" was compelling in that it touched upon the common human experience in life of failing multiple times at something before succeeding in making it a dream come true. Ryan Gosling starred as Sebastian, while Emma Stone starred as Mia. Sebastian was trying to get his own jazz club established, while Mia was aspiring to settle down in life as an actress. This story was believable, because it is natural for humans in their early adult years to struggle before getting into a good position jobwise and financially.
It is not until Sebastian specifically encourages her to write her one-woman show that Mia makes an active effort to change her career path, and when that fails she goes right back to accepting her alternative career. Sebastian, on the other hand, does try and actively change his situation. He encourages Mia twice to make strides in her career. He is shown rehearsing and playing in various bands; when he does finally accept a job, it is one within his realm of interest, to an extent. Sebastian is constantly vocal within the film about what he sees as wrongdoing, in terms of his chosen path and Mia’s.
In the year 2017, “La La Land” swept many categories at the Academy awards including best actress, best cinematography, and best director. In addition to its stunning scenery and top of the line acting, “La La Land” won the Academy Award for best original score. After watching the movie, this choice will be obvious due to the incredible melodies intertwined into the plot of this jazz-based movie. “La La Land” follows the lives of Sebastian and Mia, two star-crossed lovers trying to make it in Los Angeles. Mia is an aspiring actor who feels defeated in her dream due to millions of failed auditions while Sebastian is a pianist whose goal is to carry on the magic of jazz with his own jazz bar but is currently hired as a restaurant pianist. The two meet briefly and their fates cross several times before a connection is made and a relationship is
Both Footloose movies are almost the same, they were just created almost 30 years apart. The original Footloose came out in 1984, and in 2011, the remake of Footloose followed. Although there is hardly ever a remake that’s better than an original, this one seems to be an exception. If the viewer takes into consideration the acting and dancing of the characters, the plot and racial diversity, and the advancements in technology, they will find that the newer version is much better than the older one.

Mia is what we would call "an old soul", and because of this, it is so reflective and profound that it is hard not to get attached to the character. The book is narrated in first person by Mia itself, so that, as she wanders around the hospital and tries to figure out what exactly is going on, we know as much as she. However, the narration innovates in telling not only the present, but interim between various flashbacks of his past. These glimpses at what happened before the accident is what gives us her old life, her family, her friend Kim and her love for Adam. Due to her severe accident, Mia went into comma. In the entire period of her comma, her feelings about her boyfriend changed drastically. In the beginning of the story she had deep love for her boyfriend but it changed during her near the end as she had not the same feelings for her boyfriend that used to be in the beginning. This suggests that Mia is a dynamic character. Mia was confused about her relationship with Adams as she was not sure about the direction of their relationship with him. Mia intended to attend the Julliard in New York; on the other hand, Adams wanted to stay in Oregon. This created a fear for Mia and she were afraid that distance will eventually affect make them apart. At one stage, Mia decided to try another instrument instead of Cello in order to appease her parents. As her family were against her and they all loved rock music. Therefore, she also decided to follow the footsteps of her parents. But when Mia falls in love with Adam and comes close to him, he advises her not to abandon playing Cello. Kim also played an important role in convincing Mia to carry on playing Cello. They both tried to convince Mia that playing Cello is her passion and she must not quit for the sake of anyone be it family members. Moreover, they also told them that she should not
Recently, there is a spike of historical films being released lately. One of the films is an Academy Award nominee for “Best Picture,” Selma. The film, Selma, is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches. The film shows the struggles of the black community face with the blockage of their voting rights and the racial inequality during the civil rights movement.
