Have you ever thought about the similarities between two stories, Or how the similarities make stories relatable. For example La Bamba and Marble Champ by Gary Soto, in the book Baseball In April. These two stories have a lot in common and a good amount of differences, it could be from taking things from his old work and enhancing it or, it could be the author's writing process.

The similarities in La Bamba and Marble Champ starts at the basic plot the main character’s want something there friends and family can be proud of “His mother and father would be proud, and his brothers and sister would be jealous and pout”Manuel felt he was just an average kid and he wanted something to make himself stand out, “Manuel knew he should be reasonable, since he himself was not great- looking, just average”. And now for a quote from Marble Champ comparing the basic goals for the two main characters, “she squeezed the eraser for an hour. She ate dinner with her left hand to spare her shooting hand and said nothing to her parents about her

dream of athletic glory.” This is implying that lupe wants to surprise her parents because, they know she is not good at any sports that she has tried out, “Her father looked at her mother and then back at his daughter.”

The differences can be small details to the main characters motives about, why they wanted to have the spotlight.

Lupe wants to step over a milestone that has lasted almost her whole life, “The truth was that Lupe was no good in sports.” While Manuel wanted to impress a girl, and then decided he needed something to make himself stand out from the kids at his neighborhood, “Manuel was the fourth of seven children and looked like a lot of kids in his neighborhood: black hair, brown face, and skinny legs scuffed from summer play.” When Lupe and Manuel decided what they were going to do for the spotlight. Lupe did not have second thoughts of if she should compete in the marbles championship or not, “I am going to enter the marbles championship” Manuel was wishy washy about going in the school talent show, “Why did I raise my hand? He asked himself, but in his heart he knew the answer. He yearned for the

limelight.”

In conclusion that similarities and differences make the author's style of writing it can say a lot about the tone, theme and, message Gary Soto is trying to get across. In his stories the basic theme is do something that you can feel proud of and, there can be hardships in between if it’s important to you reach your goal.
