I had chosen to specialize in legal studies as a path of study and profession while I was still in high school. At the time, I also worked as a part-time administrative assistant at a local law firm, as means to gain relevant insight to the appropriate professional conduct in a work place, in addition to providing for myself at a time during which my family was braving dire financial difficulties.
One day, and as I was about to leave for home, an upset elderly woman walked into the office. At that time, there was but the senior lawyer and myself in the firm, so I did my best to settle her down and led her to the lawyer in his office. It was on that night that I found myself for the very first time observing the illustration of an actual case, as my employer requested I join them and take notes for him. Truthfully, it was a tall order, for not only did I lack any legal experience but also the client’s narrative was one of wrongful unjust and abuse and it moved me a great deal. Over, the next few months I continued to assist on the case in my humble capacity and so I become very invested in its developments. Therefore, I was overcome with feelings of victory and pride when we won the case. Shortly after that, the client returned to office simply to thank me and present me with a simple gift for my assistance to her on that late night; a gift I treasure to this day. I truly believe that my involvement in this case, however tedious and humble it was, motivated me to enter the field as a student of law with hopes of becoming a future professional lawyer.

Johnny’s experience as an attorney falls far short of being the legal crusader that he envisioned for himself. Rather, it is quite short-lived . John Edwards dedicated his professional life to helping those who couldn’t help themselves. Following his graduation from law school, John Edwards spent a year clerking for the office of Judge Franklin Dupree, Jr. of the United States District Court (Eastern District). In 1978, he accepted an associate position working for the firm of Dearborn and Ewing, where he practiced law for three years. He jumped ship to work for another firm, Tharrington, Smith and Hargrove, a position he held for two years before being promoted to partner at that firm. He continued as a partner at Tharrington, Smith and Hargrove until 1992, when he left to start his own law practice with fellow lawyer, David Kirby. Moot courts also teach professionalism and ethics to students of law, to apply law to fact, to structure and rank a legal argument by strength, and not to assert losing propositions. They provide law students opportunities to improve their legal writing, legal research, and oral advocacy in a competitive environment that prepares students for a competitive world. The moot court experience is perhaps the most important activity in law school. It is the activity that fully develops the skill every lawyer must possess: advocacy. Regardless of practice area, all lawyers must communicate in a way that advances their client’s interests, whether in a courtroom or boardroom. Most important, moot court builds character. Every student competitor “will be a better lawyer, and a better person, because of the moot court experience.”
