The focus of this year’s AUCD Conference aligns perfectly with my goals for the LEND training program. I have outlined multiple objectives for advocacy and communication in my Personal Leadership Plan for this year. These are both areas where I have much to learn. The mission pillars of the Spina Bifida Coalition of Cincinnati (SBCC) are Advocate, Connect, Educate and Support. In my years working with SBCC, I have concentrated on connecting people at social events, as well as linking them with local resources, creating opportunities for families to learn, and providing financial assistance and emotional support. I do not have much experience with advocacy, however. The chance to hear national leaders in developmental disability policy speak

Perhaps if everyone realized the wisdom in the famous proverb, “before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes”, people would have more empathy for those who may seem to be atypical. The video How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T. City Workshop presented by Richard D. Lavoie effectively gets participants to experience the feelings and stress of children with learning disabilities. Lavoie draws his participants into the classroom experience with well developed exercises that elicit the frustration, anxiety, and tension of children with
We may not have eradicated all of the stubborn philosophies about physically challenged individuals, American society has greatly enhanced since the 1920s. More of us understand the diversity in each other, and that many conditions affect people differently. The Polio Journals brightens that path of progress and sheds light on how far there is yet to travel. I highly recommend this read, and I look forward to gaining more insight into the eyes of
Lee Siegel's “Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans” challenges the current state of the American system of higher education by targeting and discussing its economic impact. He begins by recounting his own story of how he was forced to take out a loan for his education at the age of seventeen. Immediately, his misgivings with the system become obvious as he states that he essentially gave his life away in order to go to college. His background is interconnected with his views on the subject given his statement that he was unable to afford college after his parents divorced and later, his mother entered bankruptcy. As he continues on to discuss how the current system causes students to be forced away from their vocation, he explains how he chose
Chapter thirteen has two subject matter that it discusses in some detail, mental illness and developmental disabilities. This review will be exploring the history, philosophy and theories of developmental disabilities. Social workers come in contact with many clients that have developmental disabilities, and the chapter gives a glimpse the history, problems, and theories related to developmental problems. Chapter thirteen explores the issues of dealing with developmental disabilities in the past and what is being done today to help social workers face the issues.
Running into barriers while attempting to locate and navigate services for developmental disabilities are not because you don't want to help your child, or don't care - chances are, you are facing a wide rage of emotions. Some barriers that take an emotiona...
Netball uses a combination of each energy systems. It is a fast paced game, with lots of stop-starting, abrupt direction changes, and short, sharp movements. For this reason, netball uses the alactacid, ATP/PC system. This caters for one explosive muscular contraction using ATP lasting 1-2 seconds, and then 10-12 seconds of creatine phosphate (CP) after that. This might be for the centre pass, or any short movements. The Lactic acid system would then take over for 10-60 seconds of high intensity movement, which could be for running or dodging down the court. The body would now progress from the anaerobic system to the aerobic, to meet the demands of the activity. This will last for one hour of work, and is the dominant system used through the 15 minute, interval quarters. As the aerobic system is the predominant energy system used in netball games, the training program is targeted to improve and work this area, for maximal performance.
...beld person as equal and for society to take responsibility for their ignorance and become more open minded and accepting of those who may have less functioning ability or mental awareness of what is going on around themselves. Only recently has the (dis)Abeld community been given the spotlight through television shows such as Bones, or House, Or CSI have those with disabilities been given a platform to push over society’s negative stereotypes of ignorance and shown how despite limitations, those with limitations can indeed live happy and healthy lives. Despite much of the stigma that still exists towards those who are (dis)Abled, much success has been made and continues to be made because of the selfless determination of a select few who are determined not to be restrained by society’s ignorance and to make a difference in the world around them and for others.
Through the ideas presented in this podcast, it is clear that positive messages surrounding disability are being presented in the media. This podcast had the intent to convince its listeners that disability is a social construct and effectively does so through its use of accessible personal anecdotes and scientific facts. By viewing people in the light of their abilities instead of their limitations, this podcast presents a positive step towards viewing people with disabilities in a positive light as a society.
Autism Speaks is a non-profit organization that works to help people and their families who have Autism. I picked this organization because I truly believe that they are helping to get rid of the stigma that those who have autism are not like everyone else, therefore they should be treated differently. Along the way, they are also helping those who can’t always afford doctors and medicine. Autism Speaks is more than just a voice for the individuals and their families. They also have the goal of raising funds for the families and for research concerning autism. All their values are outlined in their mission statement which is: “Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research” (Autism Speaks).
...l awareness to the ability to process language and sensory experiences and integrate with ones own environment. Until research on autism and other developmental disabilities yields more information about how autism affects neurological function, children and adults who are affected will not be served to the fullest extent of our capabilities as providers of equal education and health care to all. It is only with more information about the neurological differences in the autistic brain that we will fully understand the best way to teach persons with autism so that they might participate to their fullest potential within their community. It is my personal belief that great progress will be made during my own lifetime and that a new level of outcome will be the normal expectation for parents when their child receives this shattering diagnosis during the next generation.
Addresses the fact that health professionals, special educators, and parents must make real efforts to promote the social acceptance of children suffering with learning disabilities.

I’m filled with pride every time I get to explain that it was my friends who started this program, my friends and I who are making such an impact on the lives of those with Friedreich’s Ataxia. At the root of the problem, FA is a disease most people have never heard about, let alone give any level of importance to. That changes when 1 of the 1 per 50,000 individuals diagnosed is your close friend - it is slowly but surely attacking Raena’s nervous system, leading her to a wheelchair at 15. Her life will not be cut short at the age of 30, however, if my friends and I have anything to do with it. Through FA4FA, we put on a yearly musical theater showcase featuring local high school students and donate all the proceeds to the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance. It is not an easy undertaking, requiring over 100 hours of rehearsal and coordinating 20 different kids’ schedules – it becomes even more stressful as the choreographer and one of three student leaders, handling all the marketing, promotion, auditioning, finances, and anything else that pertains to running a non-profit at the age of
The Portage Project was created 32 years ago in Portage, Wisconsin, in response to the need to provide services in rural communities to young children with disabilities. It was first funded by the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped (B.E.H). Portage is known for early intervention and development of intervention systems in the community. Its success relies heavily on parental involvement. This requires the enhancement of the development of young children with disabilities. All parents need to first understand that development of the child occurs sequentially in nature. Secondly, they must believe that the child's development can be influenced and impacted by their efforts. A final assumption that needs to be met if family involvement is to be implemented is p...
