In “Girl in Translation,” Kwok points out the conflict between Aunt Paula and Kimberly’s mother. In the novel, we can see that Aunt Paula treats Kimberly and Ma really badly. She just gives them a run-down apartment to live in, which is very dirty and feel likes a unsafe place to be a home for them. But Aunt Paula just insists, “remember, if there are any problems, we will fix them. Together. Because we are family” (Kwok 6). Kwok implies that it is really ambivalent for how Aunt Paula treats her younger sister, Ma, and her niece, Kimberly. For example, when she knows that Kimberly being accepted into a good university and get a full scholarship, she wants to kick them out of the apartment. Her mis-hearing and misunderstand of English words had lead her to become a timorous girl in school. Kwok does a good job to clearly writes phonetically to let us understand the difficulties for her to speak English. She writes out the words that Kimberly pronounce it wrong, so we could get a sense of language barrier in the novel. The way she says “May I borrow a rubber?” (Kwok 50), it’s actually the way British would speak. But in the American way, “rubber” should be called an “eraser.” From this little embrasser moment, we could feel that how Kimberly was suffering in the language barrier. We can see that it is hard for her to speak English in American accent, since she had learned to speak English in British accent when she was in Hong Kong. Therefore, she had to always remind herself to not speak British English as no one would understand. Kwok brings out the common problems that many immigrants might experience when they first arrived in the new land. Furthermore, culture difference is another problem that Kimberly has to deal with. Princess Redbird, eldest daughter of king of the people of the Great Forest, or the Hsien, must learn to stay true to herself, while having to cope with the changing times around her. The year is 531 A.D. in Southern China, and Princess Redbird is normally attending the boarding school of Kao-Liang at the Chinese colony. Redbird then only returns to see her family at the Hsien capital, Kingfisher Hill, for holidays. At Kao-Liang she learns to read and write in the Chinese language. Back at her home, the town of Kingfisher Hill, the capitol of the Hsien, everyone is completely illiterate. This makes Redbird's abilities to not only both read and write, but also know about Chinese history very bizarre. At the colony, Redbird stays with the Chens, the family of Chinese nobles whose head, Master Chen, the teacher at Kao-Liang, allowed her to stay. While the Chinese ways are quite different, Redbird admires Master Chen's love for books, literature, and overall taste for Chinese history. She also comes to respect the rest of the Chens. From Madame, Master Chen's daughter in-law, to Madame's children, her son Lin, and her 2 daughters Ch'ai, who is 4 years older than Princess Redbird, and Yü, who is 1 year younger. However when Redbird is unexpectedly summoned home, she fears that it is because the Dog Heads', (who are "a savage folk who take people's heads for the power they symbolize") threat has suddenly grown, as they are seemingly becoming bolder, and increasing in numbers.
The narrator has two daughters, Dee and Maggie. Dee was this cute girl who was super intelligent and sophisticated. She often saw herself as being above her mother and sister and would often make them feel stupid and bad about themselves. "She used to read to us without pity, forcing words, lies, other folks' habits, whole lives upon us two, sitting trapped and ignorant underneath her voice". She shows that Dee enjoyed making her mother and younger sister feel dumb about themselves because it made her feel superior. Her whole life Dee detested her family and where she came from and couldn’t wait to get away. But, still her mother worked her booty off to provide her with high education and a good life. Dee goes away to college and when she returns she is a completely different person, suddenly interested in her family; photographing them upon arrival. With her guest, new "Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo", invades her mothers house taking everything in like it’s a cute display for her. Finally, when Wangero (Dee) demands that her mother give her some quilts, her mum can not take anymore. She tells Dee that Maggie, not her, will be receiving the quilts and she snaps. "I did something I never had done before: hugged Maggie to me, then dragged her on into the room, snatched the quilts out of Miss Wangero's hands, and dumped them into Maggie's lap. Maggie just sat
Aunt Burnie before was always perceived as the picture of virtuous she was kind, patient, optimistic, and passive, however, it seems her virtuous qualities affected others as well.. When Aunt Burnie was introduced, she walked in to Min and Jade arguing with each other while the children were crying she easily calmed down the situation and was described as by the narrator, “Aunt Burnie 's a peacemaker. She doesn 't like trouble.” This quote show how she was someone who kept peace around the house when things are amiss she was the one able to calm everyone down, so it seems that she as a positive role model to the family (Saunders 95). Although this story is told in the third person, the reader’s eyes are strictly controlled by the meddling, ever-involved grandmother. She is never given a name; she is just a generic grandmother; she could belong to anyone. O’Connor portrays her as simply annoying, a thorn in her son’s side. As the little girl June Star rudely puts it, “She has to go everywhere we go. She wouldn’t stay at home to be queen for a day” (117-118). As June Star demonstrates, the family treats the grandmother with great reproach. Even as she is driving them all crazy with her constant comments and old-fashioned attitude, the reader is made to feel sorry for her. It is this constant stream of confliction that keeps the story boiling, and eventually overflows into the shocking conclusion. Of course the grandmother meant no harm, but who can help but to blame her? O’Connor puts her readers into a fit of rage as “the horrible thought” comes to the grandmother, “that the house she had remembered so vividly was not in Georgia but in Tennessee” (125).
The Essay written by Amy Tan titled 'Mother Tongue' concludes with her saying, 'I knew I had succeeded where I counted when my mother finished my book and gave her understandable verdict' (39). The essay focuses on the prejudices of Amy and her mother. All her life, Amy's mother has been looked down upon due to the fact that she did not speak proper English. Amy defends her mother's 'Broken' English by the fact that she is Chinese and that the 'Simple' English spoken in her family 'Has become a language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk' (36). Little did she know that she was actually speaking more than one type of English. Amy Tan was successful in providing resourceful information in every aspect. This gave the reader a full understanding of the disadvantages Amy and her mother had with reading and writing. The Essay 'Mother Tongue' truly represents Amy Tan's love and passion for her mother as well as her writing. Finally getting the respect of her critics and lucratively connecting with the reaction her mother had to her book, 'So easy to read' (39). Was writing a book the best way to bond with your own mother? Is it a struggle to always have the urge to fit in? Was it healthy for her to take care of family situations all her life because her mother is unable to speak clear English?
The grandmother had the highest status of the family because she ordered and punished the four grandchildren and Mrs. Dollanger. The grandmother at that point was now of authority status to the grandfather because he was sick in his dying bed. This goes against the definition of sexism, stating that men are believed to be superior to women. The oldest sister Cathy begins to encounter a role conflict within herself. She takes on the role of a sister and she also depicts a mother, because she is the one that cares for her young sister and brother. Strangely, she takes on the role as the sexual partner of her brother, Chris, because they do not yet understand that this is wrong because of their entrapment from society. Mrs. Dollanger then receives a sanction when her father dies, which is to inherit her father's estate. This was her reward for her father thinking that she hadn't had children. Her sanction at the beginning of the novel was the punishment of marrying her half uncle by her father disinheriting her.
In the short story, “Girl,” the narrator describes certain tasks a woman should be responsible for based on the narrator’s culture, time period, and social standing. This story also reflects the coming of age of this girl, her transition into a lady, and shows the age gap between the mother and the daughter. The mother has certain beliefs that she is trying to pass to her daughter for her well-being, but the daughter is confused by this regimented life style. The author, Jamaica Kincaid, uses various tones to show a second person point of view and repetition to demonstrate what these responsibilities felt like, how she had to behave based on her social standing, and how to follow traditional customs.
In the work of Amy Tan’s “Mother’s Tongue” she provides a look into how she adapted her language to assimilate into American culture. She made changes to her language because her mother heavily relied on her for translation. She was the voice of her mother, relaying information in standard English to those who were unable to understand her mother’s broken english. She tells about her mother’s broken english and its impact on her communication to those outside their culture. Her mothers broken english limited others’ perception of her intelligence, and even her own perception of her mother was scewed: Tan said, “I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mothers ‘limited’ English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say.” (419) The use of standard english was a critical component to Tan’s assimilation into American culture. Standard English was an element she acquired to help her mother but more importantly is was an element that helped in her gain success as a writer. The grandmother is very judgmental and her actions lead up to her family’s death. She calls a little boy a cute “little pick ninny” and we see her true colors. Pick ninny is a derogatory word towards black people and no good Christian woman would ever say those words (O’Connor 412). The grandmother tries very hard to be a good woman but her actions oppose everything she wants society to believe about her. The grandmother sees that her grandchildren are not the most behaved kids so she tells them they should be good people by listening and showing respect. Parental pressure is often part of a child’s life. The pressure depends on gender, society, and also culture. The really short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kinvaid is a conversation between a mother and daughter. The mother talk most of the time; she gave a long series of warnings and advice to the daughter, who responds only twice. These advises are mostly about how to take care of her dad, or future husband, and also household chores, cooking, manners, social conduct. The voice of the mother seemed commanding and “bitchy” but the mother seems to expect a great deal of her daughter, and she did say what she had to say to let the girl know it.
Although, parents try to be fair there are always subtle differences picked up by the children, whether one is preferred better over the other sibling. These occurrences are known as parents picking favorites. Of course, every mother loves her children equally, but tends to favor one over the other simply because he or she is older, smarter, holds more responsibility, or just better behaved than the others, the reason being always varies. Throughout the short story, Walker reveals the two sister’s differences in character and personalities through the use of language (words) and actions as the story develops. The reader learns more about each sister through the mother’s words.
The first time Kingston had to speak English in kindergarten was the moment silence infiltrated her world. Simple dialogue such as “hello” or asking for directions was hell for her because people usually couldn’t hear her the first time she asked, and her voice became weaker every time she tried to repeat the question (422).
