My general reaction to this story was I enjoy how each character had their own disabilities. I like how the author transition from why they had there is disabilities and how badly it affected them. This story is a primarily an escape piece of work. I say this because it shows that is a way for the writer escape on how people think how they were different and how the government wanted them to be “equal”. In the short story Harrison Bergeron (written by Kurt Vonnegut) it went into detail about how individuals should be considered equal, and in the time the story was placed in everyone was ‘equal. Everyone that were considered different or “special” wore handicaps to keep them at pace as everyone else. The character Harrison himself was an individual
that held so many physical features that made him an outsider, but he felt like everything different about him made him who he is. His mother was a simple person and she held no handicaps in her life, she was they called averaged, although she was very clueless she did wish that she could experience the handicap life. As for Harrison’s father George he had a handicap that kep him from using his brain to the fullest. The story was set in America 2081. Progressing on to the theme of this text, I feel as though the theme is that quality is not about how you look or act , it’s all about how someone is approached as an individual. I think the protagonist in this short story is Harrison himself, he was a character that stood up what he felt was right and he knew that the equality in America 2081 was just a big rip off. The antagonist would be the government, because they are the ones to continue to harass the people of America. The symbol that stood to me where the restraints, they caused the people to be nothing but ordinary. To conclude my final thoughts I’d like to restate what the theme is that quality is not about how you look or act , it’s all about how someone is approached as an individual. I think the that government could’ve took another approach on making everyone equal. Being equal means being the same in value not by physical appearance. I think the idea of being equal was considerate of others, but the concept they followed by was the wrong way to go

The short novel “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut presents a futuristic portrayal of a world where everyone is equal in every way possible. In “Harrison Bergeron,” Vonnegut displays the clear flaws in society that lead to the creation of a horrific dystopia that lacks genuine human emotions, fails to develop as a civilized community and is strictly government At the beginning of the story we are introduced to George and Hazel who are an ordinary couple that consequently suffer from handicaps. They are recalling the time when their son, Harrison Bergeron, was taken from his home by the handicapper general. It was an unhappy thought “but George and Hazel couldn't think about it very hard” (Vonnegut 1) due to the mental radio that separated the two from regular functioning emotions. Although Hazel was not affected by the handicap itself, it became a societal norm to act almost robot-like.

The goal of the program is to make everyone equal in physical capabilities, mental aptitude and even outward appearance. The story is focused around a husband and wife whose son, Harrison, was taken by the government because he is very strong and smart, and therefore too above normal not to be locked up.
