Kurt Vonnegut makes use of outrages details in order to portray how absurd the idea of a perfect society is. Vonnegut draws the reader's attention by describing the physical aspects Of Harrison with such words as “Harrison's appearance was Halloween and Hardware” which is simply unthinkable for a fourteen-year-old boy(Vonnegut, pg 38). The society itself is simply appalling from having an announcer that can't even read to having everyone dumbed down to having the mental capacity of a child not only that but they would have people with simply average skills and bring them down so that those who were below average would not feel bad for themselves. Vonnegut deals a lot with fantasy in his book, Cat's Cradle. From the beginning, he talks about the religion that he follows: Bokonism. This is not a real religion, however he has rules, songs, scriptures, and opinions of a person that practices this fantasy religion. Within his description of this religion however is black humor as well. I think that by him making up this whole religion and an entire island of people who follow it, is in a way mocking today's religion and the way that people are dedicated to their beliefs.

“Harrison Bergeron” starts with explaining the society within the story. It begins, “The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way,” (Vonnegut 158). With this startlingly different introduction, Vonnegut explains that everyone is equal but does not include how during this time. As the story progresses, the reader begins to see exactly how the citizens are “equal.”

	The narrator in Ellison’s short story suffers much. He is considered to be one of the brighter youths in his black community. The young man is given the opportunity to give a speech to some of the more prestigious white individuals. The harsh treatment that he is dealt in order to perform his task is quite symbolic. It represents the many hardships that the African American people endured while they fought to be treated equally in the United States. He expects to give his speech in a positive and normal environment. What faces him is something that he never would have imagined. Vonnegut's Nihilistic Views Exposed in Cat's Cradle If humans strive to fulfill their void, of a lack of meaning in their lives, their folly will blind them from the truth. Kurt Vonnegut portrays his inner emotions and feelings of the insignificance of religion through the characters of his novel, Cat's Cradle. His satiric approach to a subject that many people base their daily existence upon, challenges the readers faith. As people search for a deeper meaning in their lives, the more confused they become. Things that are bound to happen will eventually happen and that is what we humans tend to call “fate”. However, what if we lived in a world where we were able to control our own fate and attain our own destiny? Where we were able to set a limit for our own lives? Yet the question also remains whether this alternate world, too, has its own exceptions. This exception that has been perceived as the ideal balance within the society appears to be the equilibrium between life and death: where the life of one being is equivalent to the death of another. This alternate world has become a reality in the short story, “2BRO2B”, written by Kurt Vonnegut from 1962, which shows us the grotesque reality behind this so-called “flawless world”. In the

“Often fear of one evil leads us into a worse”(Despreaux). Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux is saying that fear consumes oneself and often times results in a worse fate. William Golding shares a similar viewpoint in his novel Lord of the Flies. A group of boys devastatingly land on a deserted island. Ralph and his friend Piggy form a group. Slowly, they become increasingly fearful. Then a boy named Jack rebels and forms his own tribe with a few boys such as Roger and Bill. Many things such as their environment, personalities and their own minds contribute to their change. Eventually, many of the boys revert to their inherently evil nature and become savage and only two boys remain civilized. The boys deal with many trials, including each other, and true colors show. In the end they are being rescued, but too much is lost. Their innocence is forever lost along with the lives Simon, a peaceful boy, and an intelligent boy, Piggy. Throughout the novel, Golding uses symbolism and characterization to show that savagery and evil are a direct effect of fear.
Kurt Vonnegut’s Galapagos tells the tale of shipwrecked humans stranded on an island called Saint Rosalia in the Galapagos archipelago. Meanwhile, in the other parts of the world, a virus wipes away humanity. The castaways, supposedly the only human beings to not have contracted the virus eventually evolve into furry beings resembling seals which took million years. The narrator, Leon Trout is a ghost that silently observed and documented the human evolution. The narrator often interjects with a contrast between the humans of today to the primitive aquatic version of humans of a million years later. This interjection along with the characterization provides the readers with a satirical albeit somewhat cynical view of the human intelligence.
Ideas are intoxicating. As well said by Oscar Wilde, an Irish writer and poet of the 1890’s, “An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all.” Kurt Vonnegut embodies this idea about ideas in a number of his novels. A common reoccurring theme brought up by Vonnegut in his book Breakfast of Champions is that an idea, or the lack of them can cause disease, and a great example of that is with the repetition of the symbol, mirrors as leaks into another universe.
The novel attacks many things: slavery, racism, commercial greed, jingoism, ecology, capitalism, imperialism, overpopulation etc., all of these aimed precisely at modern American society. Vonnegut "brings a remarcable air of discovery to these themes, the pretense that no one has quite seen before the stark outlines of our hypocrisy," (Todd). Vonnegut is "impolite" in his writing about these matters. He was taught to this impoliteness when he was a kid (p.2) by Phoebe Hurty -- the person this novel is dedicated to.
