“Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self esteem” Kurt Cobain. Kurt Cobain is an American musician best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the rock band Nirvana. The estimated cost of drug abuse exceeds $190 billion. Children all around the world are having to adjust their life around their parents drug usage. More needs to be done to help kids who have drug abusing parents.

Many people have committed a crime under the influence of some type drug. All drugs affect how people think and act, causing them to do things that they normally wouldnt do.
Crime rate statistics . More than three out of every four State, Federal, or local jail inmates previously were involved seriously with drugs in some way. They were convicted of a drug -related crime, using illicit substances regularly, or were under the influence of drugs when they committed a crime. Research indicates that among inmates with a serious mental disorder, seventy-two percent have a co-occurring SUD (Substance Use Disease). An additional seventy-five percent of incarcerated women are mothers, and two-thirds have minor children, who are often placed outside of the home while their mothers are incarcerated. In some cases that’s true. Parents who use drugs don’t realize that their kids can see what they’re doing and often will take after them. Up to seventy percent of kids who have parents who use drugs become users themselves. In 2007, there were an estimated 529,000 current users of drugs aged 12 and older. Teens are at the age where they become more interested in things and are feeling the need to try new things. Sixty-seven percent of teens who end up with HIV/AIDS or hepatitis C are results of them sharing syringes and needles from using heroin and meth. Children of abusers are 3 to 4 times at greater risk of being drug dependent which accounts for a significant amount of the increased hospitalization for poisoning and accidental trauma.
