“I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.” “Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.” -Kurt Cobain. Kurt Cobain was known for forming the band Nirvana. Nirvana originated in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1997. To this day, Nirvana has sold 25 million records in the United States alone and 75 million worldwide. Kurt Cobain’s impact on culture lasted throughout the 1980’s and beyond.
Kurt Cobain was born February 20, 1967, right outside of Seattle, in Aberdeen, Washington. Kurt Cobain passed in his Seattle home from a self inflicted shotgun wound on April 5, 1994. “After his parents divorced when he was nine, Cobain became withdrawn.”(Unknown) Cobain had a rough upbringing and struggled finding somewhere to stay after his parents split. Often, Cobain would go stay with his grandparents. For a long time, if you were able to find Cobain’s grandparents house, they

the distraught crowd filled the air with profane chants, burnt their flannel shirts and fought with police.”(Ronson) “Nirvana's choice to honour bands and people that had influenced them and Cobain's passionate and intense vocals especially on "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" silenced many of those who had labeled Cobain talentless.”(Ronson) Kurt Cobain had both a positive and negative influence. I know that while Kurt was alive he influenced culture positively. Some would say that “his” music was too loud and obnoxious. But what balanced out the loud was the truth in his lyrics. If Nirvana hadn’t been around, I don’t think there would have been such an impact by the grunge bands. If Cobain hadn’t committed suicide, I think that Nirvana might have burned out. Burning out was the opposite of what Kurt wanted. In all, I think that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana had more positive influence than negative. “I write poems for myself and I write poetry that gets torn apart and becomes songs. I have a lot of respect for words, the power of words.” -Kurt
Fall Out Boy is an American rock band formed in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 2001. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, guitarist Joe Trohman, and drummer Andy Hurley. The band originated from Chicago's hard-core punk scene, with which Wentz was heavily involved. The group was formed by Wentz and Trohman as a pop punk side project of their respective hard-core bands, and Stump joined shortly thereafter. The group went through a succession of drummers before landing Hurley and recording their debut album which became a huge success.
Kurt was an extremely happy child. He would wake up everyday so happy. He was

Kurt Cobain the singer and guitarist of the 90s band Nirvana which was an alternative rock band from 1988 to 1994. Cobain was born in the town of Aberdeen Washington. Aberdeen is a rural white trash town that borders Seattle the birth place of “Grunge”. Before them at record stores there were special sections for alternative music, they popularized it. However many grunge bands were around such as Mud Honey and The Melvins.
The Life of Billy Joel Billy Joel was born on May 9, 1949 in Bronx, New York. He moved at the age of four to a small town on Long Island. This is where at the ripe age of four he discovered the art of music. Originally a classical music fan, Billy Joel honed his skills with classical piano training. This undoubtedly has had a major influence on his life and certainly his music.
“We’re just musically and rhythmically retarded. We play so hard that we can’t tune our guitars fast enough. People can relate to that.” Kurt Cobain’s thoughts on why his band, Nirvana was such a massive success in an unexpected way. A heroin shooting, guitar strumming musician who sang the barely audible lyrics which spoke so loudly for the angst ridden youth of America had such an important influence on our culture that over twenty years later, the details around his suicide are still heatedly debated. The impact that Cobain had on the world was intense at the time and can still be found today; the music he wrote for Nirvana had influence on the music industry, his unintended voice to angst-ridden society and even the fashion industry cashed in on his style.
Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the infamous band Nirvana was discovered outside of his Seattle home three days after his death by Garry Smith on April 8, 1994. While Cobain’s official death certificate reads suicide, many theories have cropped up over the years that claim to explain neglected attributes to the original case.

The biggest influential song on Nirvana’s Nevermind album was the first song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It reached number 6 on the Top 40 Charts. This song was groundbreaking for Nirvana and the alternative music scene as a whole. After the release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” white, middle-class youth of the United States finally had a style of music to call their own and express their “teenage anthems” (Stuessy, Joe). This was the first song to emerge from alternative rock and to be known in the mainstream of rock and roll, expressing their generation’s expectations, “...here we are now, entertain us”(Stuessy, Joe). “Smells like Teen Spirit” was Curt Cobain’s “attempt to write the ultimate pop song”(Nevermind, Nirvana). He used the soft-loud dynamics of his favorite band, the Pixies. The insidious hooks also showed his admiration for the Beatle’s John Lennon(Nevermind, Nirvana). The style used in this song is simple, plain, loud, and straight-forward. Musically, there is nothing very “innovative” or difficult. However, the reason it is important to rock history is because it brought America’s attention to the once before underground style of grunge. “A driving drum beat, powered by Novelsek’s rhythmic bass, and a memorable guitar riff and solo, mix perfectly with Kurt Cobain’s depressing yet humorous lyrics” (Kastner, Patrick). While it has certainly been overplayed in the past years, it is still an essential part of Rock history.

Bob Dylan’s contributions to rock music will live on. He caused teenagers to appreciate poetry again and made people who’d normally ignore politics care. His nasally voice and six minute hits forced music out of it norms and opened the doors for more unconventional artists. Dylan’s view on the world and his ability to educate on others on it through his art led many to believe him to a be a prophet. The ideas Bob Dylan contributed music will continue to thrive for as long as rock music lives.
In high school Cobain befriended a gay student and had to endure bullying from people who though he was gay. Cobain later admitted that he was “gay in spirit” and “probably could be bisexual” (“The Dark Side,” 1992). He dropped out of high school two weeks before graduation because he did not have enough credits, and became a janitor. It was in high school, however, that the beginnings of Cobain’s career were formed. He met Krist Novoselic, and later co...
Nick Broomfield’s 1998 documentary Kurt and Courtney is arguably his most well known film for both the controversial reactions to its subject and the subject itself in equal measure. The documentary explores Kurt Cobain’s life and the possible causes of his untimely death, particularly the involvement of his then wife Courtney Love. Over his filmic career Broomfield has built a repertoire of varying and experimental documentary techniques. In Kurt and Courtney Broomfield becomes as much a character in the documentary as its namesakes through his active involvement in the film’s narrative. This has lead critics question the Broomfield’s impartiality, and by extension the credibility of the documentary.
First, let us define what grunge is and where it comes from. Grunge as defined by web encyclopedia alt.culture is the cumulative influences of punk and ‘70s heavy metal (plus rain, coffee, cheap, potent beer, and occasionally heroin), a cohort of Seattle bands developed a soulful hard rock variant that was instrumental to alternative music’s early-‘90s move underground (altculture. com). Among the bands included in the definition Nirvana would be mainly the one that made this phenomenon popular. Released in 1991, Nevermind—a record by an obscure band working in a genre considered as hopelessly uncommercial—launched the grunge phenomenon and marked an era of unprecedented exposure for alternative acts. Then other bands like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Candlebox followed the trail that Nirvana started in the grunge w...
