“I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.” This was once said by a legend named Kurt Cobain. He was born on February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington. As lead singer of the grunge band Nirvana, he is one the most influential person in alternative music history. He helped shape the music that we all love today. Nirvana affected many people and still does today with their music that inspired many. Unfortunately, Cobain died on April 5, 1994, in the guest home behind his home in Seattle; he had committed suicide. Although Kurt Cobain has passed, he still takes effect in the world around us today. Kurt Cobain and Nirvana affected many people and still do today. With their album, Nevermind Nirvana shaped and created grunge music. Before Nirvana had come along, alternative had been classified as a “tax write-off” for most major labels. According to a quote from Matt Habeger from diffuser.fm, “At the time they were all into bands like Mötley Crue, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Poison and the rest. I felt that I was supposed to like this music because the older kids did, but I didn’t really understand or relate to it. Then ‘Nevermind’ came out and completely obliterated that whole era of music.” While reading through the article, it made me realize how many people's lives changed when listening to Nirvana’s music. …show more content…
Kurt Cobain and his role in music with Nirvana will continue for years to come.
It has been 22 years since he committed suicide and their music still lives on, showing that it will continue throughout the ages. Out of the three albums published, Cobain was alive for two of them. A quote from bbc.com that includes an article about Nirvana's legacy, “Twenty years later, those lyrics have proven at least partially prophetic.” Today, over 20 years later, people are still listening to their music. Often times in our school, there is at least one student wearing the most classic and well-known Nirvana
shirt. Nirvana reached their goal by creating music that inspired people. With words and a beat they made music such as, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Come As You Are”, “Heart-Shaped Box”, “About a Girl”, and “Lithium”. “Nirvana smashed through the pretentiousness, leaving a huge, wrecking ball sized hole for ‘alternative’ music to climb through after them.” (Stated in an article on musicroom.com labeled ‘10 marks left by Kurt Cobain’) Nirvana was able to create the lead for alternative music to rise up and become popular. Many popular bands of now may not have been able to rise up and be as well known today if it wasn't for Kurt Cobain and his work with making music. Although Kurt Cobain has passed, he still takes effect in the world around us today. Nirvana has few surviving members, they all will remember their time in this band and how it changed people's lives. Many people will only talk about his suicide, all the others know that he is most known for his music and songwriting career. “Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”
...sley performed his music in all types of genres. Presley allowed musicians to step out of the box and be their selves. He had hit songs in gospel, rock, pop, and country. Although he lived a short life, he is still famous in some people’s eyes. I met a woman who had attended one of Elvis’s performances and she said it was the best concert she had ever been to. During the concert she said Elvis was dancing and all the girls were going crazy as always. He removed his scarf and threw it into the crowd she was the lucky one who caught it. She still has his scarf in her house, and will never forget the memories of that night. Elvis passed away on August 16, 1977 in his home from heart failure. The King still lives on in many people’s lives and his music career helped many people. Elvis Presley led the way for many musicians, and has impacted the lives of many people.
The Grateful Dead are one of the rock bands that helped shape music into what it is now. The band is known for their signature live performances, which includes improvisational sections that can last for up to half an hour. The Grateful Dead has had many different members who all influenced their unique sound in a different way.
Music can be traced back into human history to prehistoric eras. To this day archeologists uncover fragments of ancient instruments as well as tablets with carved lyrics buried alongside prominent leaders and highly influential people. This serves as a testament to the importance and power of music, as well as its influence in society. Over its many years of existence, music’s powerful invocation of feelings has allowed it to evolve and serve many purposes, one being inspiring change. American journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel.” This fuel is the very things that powers the influence of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society, that author Glenn C. Altschuler writes about in his book, “All Shook Up – How Rock ‘n’ Roll Changed America.” Between 1945 and 1965 Rock ‘n’ Roll transformed American society and culture by helping to ease racial integration and launch a sexual revolution while most importantly developing an intergenerational identity.
He also said that I would rather be hated for who I am than be loved for who I am not.Meaning that he does not care what people think of him.The textual evidence is “Even though he was heroin drug addict he inspired a lot of people”. Our definition is shown in Kurt Cobain because of all the great things that he accomplished. Kurt Cobain is a hero because of him being an activist, and he lived his dream as becoming a rock star. He has made many good songs that have inspired people, and since he did all of this, this shows us that he tried to make the most of his life in the short years that he
He made people understand the importance of being at peace with yourself and being content in life. He supported finding happiness through drugs and through life and he severely influenced the public and many people followed in his steps and this began the hippie movement. Not only did he have an impact on society, but he also had an impact in the individual American’s life, giving a sense of hope and freedom to the world. On September 18, 1970, Jimi died in London from drug related complications and while he was only 27 years old at the time of his passing, he left his legendary mark on the world of rock music and remains popular to this day.
The biggest influential song on Nirvana’s Nevermind album was the first song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It reached number 6 on the Top 40 Charts. This song was groundbreaking for Nirvana and the alternative music scene as a whole. After the release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” white, middle-class youth of the United States finally had a style of music to call their own and express their “teenage anthems” (Stuessy, Joe). This was the first song to emerge from alternative rock and to be known in the mainstream of rock and roll, expressing their generation’s expectations, “...here we are now, entertain us”(Stuessy, Joe). “Smells like Teen Spirit” was Curt Cobain’s “attempt to write the ultimate pop song”(Nevermind, Nirvana). He used the soft-loud dynamics of his favorite band, the Pixies. The insidious hooks also showed his admiration for the Beatle’s John Lennon(Nevermind, Nirvana). The style used in this song is simple, plain, loud, and straight-forward. Musically, there is nothing very “innovative” or difficult. However, the reason it is important to rock history is because it brought America’s attention to the once before underground style of grunge. “A driving drum beat, powered by Novelsek’s rhythmic bass, and a memorable guitar riff and solo, mix perfectly with Kurt Cobain’s depressing yet humorous lyrics” (Kastner, Patrick). While it has certainly been overplayed in the past years, it is still an essential part of Rock history.
In conclusion this report has helped us understand the significance of Music in America. Also, the impact it has on music we listen too. Music is very much like a big chain reaction. Rock ‘N’ Roll, much like music today, stood out and was in a way rebellious. Parents now hate Rap and we love it. People in the 70’s loved Rock ‘N’ Roll and parents hated it. This shows that maybe no matter how much older people deny it, the time gap and generation gap is not too far apart. Without Rock ‘N’ Roll the World would without a doubt be changed. Any guess to that of which way would be a good one.
Grunge began as a raw, rough sounding version of the rock music that was prevalent during the 1980s. It started in 1980s Seattle in the form of bands like Mudhoney and The Screaming Trees. However, it was in the early 1990s, when bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden emerged that the grunge movement took America by storm. These bands allowed people to experience and revel in an entirely new kind of music, which was both expressive and relevant. Though there are several bands both within and outside of the United States that play and some who still play grunge music, the most influential band was Nirvana. Front-man Kurt Cobain still holds a place as a music icon, and it is the ...

First, let us define what grunge is and where it comes from. Grunge as defined by web encyclopedia alt.culture is the cumulative influences of punk and ‘70s heavy metal (plus rain, coffee, cheap, potent beer, and occasionally heroin), a cohort of Seattle bands developed a soulful hard rock variant that was instrumental to alternative music’s early-‘90s move underground (altculture. com). Among the bands included in the definition Nirvana would be mainly the one that made this phenomenon popular. Released in 1991, Nevermind—a record by an obscure band working in a genre considered as hopelessly uncommercial—launched the grunge phenomenon and marked an era of unprecedented exposure for alternative acts. Then other bands like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Candlebox followed the trail that Nirvana started in the grunge w...
