Kumon Math & Reading Center is an educational center that teaches children math and reading. It also teaches the children how to be a self-learner. As a tutor, the typical activities that a tutor does is grading the student’s homework, classwork, and corrections, tutoring the students, input the student’s score into the CMS program, and preparing the student’s folder for the following weeks. The interactions with the students are the most beneficial in my education because I get to see how they are in the educational environment. Kumon is slightly stricter than the school setting because there are rules that the school does not enforce. One of the things that they cannot do is to count with their fingers with doing their math assignment. We recommend them to write down whatever answer comes to their mind and complete their work as fast as they can. Their progress of their work depends on the number of correct and the time that it takes them to complete the assignment. Another thing that they have to do that the school does not make them do is to sit straight up, facing the front with their feet on the floor. There were no ethical concerns that I have at Kumon during my internship.
There are not much changes that I would recommend for this experience to be beneficial to me. I believed that this

Students spend more time with the parents than with the tutor at Kumon since they are only at Kumon for two days of the week, to do their classwork. Those other five days of the week, they are at home with their parents doing their homework. If the students see that their parents does not encourage the children to do their work or is there for support, the students can model the parents and not care about education. This type of parents can give the tutor a hard time because the tutor are trying to give the students the best education that they
My experiences with tutoring others has taught me that it satisfies me to help others understand and learn. As you teach others you learn about the different ways you handle situations and solve issues as well. I’ve always been the person that my classmates come up to for help, but it wasn’t till grade 10 until I officially started tutoring math, mainly Pre-Calculus 12. In grade 11, I continued tutoring, but this time I focused on a single individual, and that brought up challenges of creating a suitable relationship, that becomes the foundation for effective learning. This year, I took on a challenge, my teacher asked me to be a mentor towards a student with learning disabilities who was struggling with school. I
Thomas Jefferson was a man who believed that all American citizens need to be educated so that they may exercise their rights. He saw public education as essential to a democracy. One proposal he made for public education would guarantee that all children could attend public schools for three years. However, much like other early school reforms, this proposal received much rejection and was never brought into being. Despite this rejection, Jefferson still believed that America needed public education. Eventually, he opened the University of Virginia. Even though his bills and proposals to benefit public education never saw the light of day, he still made many contributions to public education by providing the foundation on how a democracy should handle educating its
For this assignment, I completed a survey to assess my school’s literacy program by using a survey that was adapted from by Patty, Maschoff, & Ransom (1996) to analyze the instructional program and the school’s infrastructure. To be able to answer my survey, I needed to go colleagues of mine in the English Department and to my administration to help with these questions. Being a math teacher, we hardly ever discuss the literacy and the students’ acquisition of it in our department meeting during staff development days. Since I am not truly current with literacy acquisition in education, I am hoping to understand more from this process so I can help all my students. I want them to be able to read texts related to math and find information that will be useful to them during the year.
“Leadership is a relationship between those who aspire to lead and those who choose to follow” (Kouzes and Posner, p. 30). Over the past two years, Sunshine Elementary School has experienced an extremely high turnover rate. To reduce and improve past destruction, staff will learn to model the way by demonstrating the values set forth by myself. The values are the standard that will assist in the development of an organization filled with a variety of leadership that will create an atmosphere of a superb leadership growth school wide. Sunshine Elementary School (SES) is the pilot for this leadership development blueprint for Pflugerville Independent
It is the tutor’s responsibility to ensure that learners feel comfortable in the learning environment and that they understand the importance of numeracy as a life and work skill and feel motivated and confident in their own abilities to use it. It is tutor’s responsibility to support the learner to achieve the goals they set on their ILP and to inspire them to achieve their full potential. It is the tutor’s role to prepare the learner with the skills needed for a successful life.
A big aspect of public schools that you don’t always get, is the teaching knowledge that professional teachers have. When a parent decides to teach their student, you could make the argument that the student would be receiving a worse education, although no one has a better understanding of their student like a parent would. One very popular idea parents are adopting is to hire a private tutor for their child. Tutors are a great tool parents can use for children, although a lot of parents today aren’t financially sound, therefore parents are unable to afford a private tutor for their children. A struggle parents have is getting the socialization their child needs, since most public school activities are not an option.

”Kids are more successful when their parents are heavily involved in their lives,” a mother concerned about the school rules for parent involvement wrote in a letter to Superintendent Greg Cuttemloose of Hardy Knox Union School District. Parent involvement in schools is positive to the extent that the child is encouraged and they can get help with their homework when they need it. If the child is neglected without any influence that they need from their parents, they would think that there is no use to studying and getting good grades. The letter from a ”Concerned Mother” and the article, ”In Defense of Helicopter Parents” by Lisa Belkin from the New York Times, show evidence of the support of parents being beneficial to a child. The influence
...to make sure that grades of the tutors don’t slip as they take on more responsibility and that the tutees grades improve as they get this assistance. This has the potential to significantly improve academics with minimal cost to the school.
Lengthened school days help to create a supportive environment for studying. After school, it is difficult for children to concentrate on homework. Many children’s homes are too crowded, and they are usually distracted by parents, friends, TV, or games. There are many other interesting things that they can do out of school, so students forget about what their teachers told them to study. Also, parents cannot help too much with their homework and only waste children’s time or give incorrect answers. My father tried to help me with a math course. I could not understand his explanations, because he was not a professional tutor. Finally, he confused me even more, and I had to make an appointment with my math teacher.
I discovered that I appeared healthier, felt more energized, and was more confident about my self-esteem.
‘Own attitudes towards and knowledge about the variety of people we teach. The way we speak and behave will say something about you, your perceptions and expectations of your students… As a tutor, you have a professional duty to behave in non—biased ways that are acceptable to all. This means recognising that every adult is of equal worth irrespective of ethnicity, gender, ability background or disposition, and working with each person to the best of your ability in order to further his/her achievements’ (2006:43).
