Consumers are the driving force in the economy due to everyday consumer needs and wants. As a result, outstanding customer service is imperative to a company’s success. Customer service is the act of taking care of the customer's needs by providing and delivering professional, helpful, high quality service and assistance before, during, and after the customer's requirements are met. The objective of this report is to provide insight into how The Kroger Co, America’s first grocery store continues to remain prominent in American history.

As a frequent Harris Teeter shopper, one of the affiliated stores under the chain, services and products are high quality, which I believe creates a better shopping experience to the consumer base. The company expanded outside the Cincinnati Ohio area by 1902 and acquired 60 additional stores and adopted the name The Kroger Grocery and Baking Company. The grocery chain was the first grocery supermarket to merge a bakery within the grocery establishment. In the same year, the company became incorporated in the Cincinnati Stock Exchange. During the next few years, the company merged the Nagle Meat Markets and Packing House the Kroger Company and Baking Company chain in 1904. (Canadean) Besides acquiring these major acquisitions, the company successfully operates and manages 10 bakeries plants, five grocery plants, two beverage plants, two meat plants, and two cheese plants and 17 dairy plants under the chain. Founded in 1883, Barney Kroger invested his life savings of $372 to open his first grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati. (Kroger, 2011). Barney was quite proud. Preliminary Starbucks – one of the fastest growing companies in the US and in the world - has built its position on the market by connecting with its customers, and creating a “third place” beside home and work, where people can relax and enjoy themselves. It was the motto of Starbucks’ owner Howard Schultz and, mostly thanks to his philosophy, the company has become the biggest coffee drink retailer in the world. However, within the new customer satisfaction report, there are shown some concerns, that the company has lost the connection with customers and it must be taken some steps to help Starbucks to go back on the right path regarding customer satisfaction. Later on, as the development of the society and the standards of customer needs increased, the owners of the grocery stores started to be more focused on their customer needs. Also, the study of “Understanding Groceries Industry” shows that the supermarket and grocery stores industry is in their mature stage as they have developed an extensive and solid customer service.
Providing great customer service and having the ability to retain customers require consistency in delivering the anticipated services. Customer service encompasses having the ability to provide a service or product to customers by means in which it was promised. However, there are times when unforeseen circumstances may occur, resulting in customer service breakdowns. Understanding the effectiveness of customer service relations provides the assurance needed to handle complicated service related issues. A well qualified customer service representative has the acquired skill to effectively defuse a potentially damaging service related matter. Service recovery influences customer retention and improves customer satisfaction.
Customer service by definition is the ability of knowledgeable, capable, and enthusiastic employees to deliver products and services to their internal and external customers in a manner that satisfies identified and unidentified needs and ultimately results in positive word-of-mouth publicity and return business (Lucas, 2012, pg.7). In other words, it’s making the customer pleased so that they keep doing business with you all while making sure that the employees get along and work together well. In every business there is a form of customer service. Unfortunately, it is not always excellent or even decent. Some businesses just either don’t care or possibly just don’t have the training to deal with some of the obstacles that come with dealing with customers on a daily basis. I’ve been in the restaurant business for over 13 years and I can tell you that there are skills that some are born with and others need training on, yet either way they should be used whenever interacting with customers.
Customer satisfaction is the overriding factor for the successful operation. Sales of the supermarket can grow when it makes its customers satisfied with the goods or services by best policy to fit customers’ requirement. So, it can be told that customer satisfaction is followed by customer revisiting or repurchasing. They can also tell their acquaintances about products or services as good. Customer satisfaction and sales might be linked directly, companies have to check the factors periodically such as quality, schedule, layout, inventory and so on to lift customer satisfaction because even small factors that employees didn’t recognize can affect consumer satisfaction enormously.
Customer Relationships is about building a relationship of trust and convenience. A customer wants the company they are working with to be intuitive. To know their needs before they do. They want to feel respected, they need to believe you are honest and have integrity. This relationship breeds comfort and familiarity and causes the consumer to continue to do business with your company. This relationship that is built develops a personal relationship, like a friendship and it is one that the consumer cannot get from the store down the road and it is that personal touch of sincerity, of knowing their needs, of servitude that will turn them into lifelong branded customers.
