the modern garden. She interprets how we have the need to control and create what we consider perfect with our sciences and labs. While rules reign, sanitation demands, and socialization take control of the perfect scene for a pleasant environment, the unpleasant side of these malls such as their trash is kept out of the vision of the consumer. Most of these consumer products that are used to entice the population to enter into this heavenly place on earth became waste that is not entirely recycled
Another focus for change is that over the years the demand for home and community care over hospital care has continued to grow, as stated by the Queens nursing institute “Recent health policy points to the importance of improving and extending services to meet the health and care needs of an increasingly older population and provide services which may have previously been provided in hospital within community settings”.
In the largely manufactured city of South Central LA, as illustrated by Ron Finley in the video ‘Guerilla Gardener’, people are suffering. Obesity rates are skyrocketing, people are dying from diseases that could be easily treated, all because of produce that is not only expensive, but also unfresh and overwhelmed with pesticides and insecticides. Ron Finley sees this happening in his community and is determined to do something. He explains in his video how gardening is not only a solution to the ongoing food crisis, but is also therapeutic, revolutionary, and life-changing.
Since the beginning of time itself, Television has been one the most influential pieces of media that the world has ever encountered. The beginning days of television depicted stereotypical mothers cooking and cleaning their homes for their husbands and children. Yet, as the decades passed, television took a dramatic turn, leaving the days of drama free entertainment as a vast memory. Now a day, however, when one hits the power on button to Bravo, the screen lights expand to ritzy socialites dealing with their everyday lives as “housewives”. Bravo TV’s hit number one reality television show, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, deals with the everyday lives of modern-day housewives. When speaking of these women and their family life, the reality series shows its viewers that family life in modern times is dramatic, full of misrepresentations of how people are perceived, and that fame comes at the cost of family.
website I chose to analyze is Popsugar. The primary rhetorical purpose of this website is to inform, but also to alter perception. The controlling idea or thesis is to keep viewers aware of what is occurring within popular culture and perhaps change the way the audience thinks about a subject. The website is separated by celebrities, fashion, fitness, beauty, love, moms, living, career, food, Latina, news and video. By separating the website into these categories, the website makes their purpose evident. It is significant that the website is split into different areas because all the areas consist of what is "popular" in each category. The website can then approach each category with stories and opinions that target the audience’s perceptions.

All people should celebrate the return of the victory garden.
Advertisements in Life magazine showed women mainly in ways were they were responsible for kitchen duties and taking care of their husbands. In the early 1950’s, there were recurring ads of women with refrigerators. In an advertisement from 1950, a woman is dressed like a typical housewife standing next to the refrigerator showing all the features it entails. It gives off the message that during this period of the 1950’s, society saw women as the face of the kitchen and a majority of the duties as a housewife took place there. Another advertisement from 1950, gives a clear indication of gender roles. In the advertisement for a refrigerator, the women and her daughter are shown organizing their refrigerator, and the man is shown as carrying in the refrigerator. The advertisement expresses that women are more fit for domestic work and that men are more for the labor tedious work that a woman cannot do. In an advertisement from 1953 to sell health insurance, the man who is selling health insurance puts a picture of himself and his...
The 1960s provided a reality time of suppressed females and overindulgent males within the society spectrum. Yet the nostalgia aspect of this manifests in the idea of the perfect housewife and the graci...
No one ever expects to live out his or her later years in life in a nursing home. When people are young they may not realize the obstacles in life that may cause them not to have a place or person to spend their older years in life with. Regrettably, many of the elderly are not treated with the care and respect they deserve. “Poor quality of care is endemic in many nursing homes” (Fernandez, 2011). It is the responsibility of the younger generation to make sure that the elderly are taken care of and that neglect does not happen. Nursing homes have too many patients and not enough care-givers compared to home care that has familiar one on one care. Home-based
Aging in place refers to remaining in one’s home and community throughout the aging process (Siebert, 2007). Additionally, it can mean living in a supportive environment that allows participation in meaningful activities, and increases quality of life (Siebert, 2007). Home modifications help facilitate participation in meaningful activities, decrease falls, and support aging in place (Siebert, 2007). Home modifications are adaptations to the environment that meet the needs of an individual, and increase safety and independence (Siebert, 2007). Although aging in place is more than home modifications, the focus and the purpose of my project is to research how affordable home modifications can support lower socioeconomic status older adults, with aging in place. There are three objectives to determine if the purpose of this project has been achieved. The first objective is that the educational presentation and booklet were effective in increasing the participant's knowledge of low-cost options and funding sources for implementing home modifications. The second objective is that the
Since I was a little girl, my mother always made it clear that a husband was unobtainable if a woman could not properly tend to his needs. I learned how to cook, how to clean, how to do laundry, and I even learned how to take care of my younger siblings all because, according to my mother, these responsibilities were a woman’s duty; it was her job. For centuries, this has been the mindset of every woman, which has been passed down from generation to generation. A stereotype that has influenced a culture and defined a human being. In this 1930’s Kellogg’s PEP Cereal advertisement we witness yet another stereotype defining women into this sexist housewife persona. Through the use of clothing and appearance, text and audience the ad conveys a
The documentary film “The Garden” is about the events that take place in a community garden in a Los Angeles Neighborhood. The community garden is established after the LA riots that occurred in 1992. During the riots a large area of land is set on fire and is occupied to establish the community garden. A group of people known as the South Central Farmers are at the forefront of the community garden and use the garden to grow food. The land that was once useless now helps rebuild the community and also helps feed families in the neighborhood. Twelve years after the establishment of the garden a notice is sent to vacate the area. This documentary is the point of view of the gardeners and the struggles faced by the community members. The gardeners continuously look for justice in terms of there opinions. There is a bias in this documentary because it is an attempt to show the difficulties that the south central farmers faced.
Hayden uses the scholarship from influential feminists to contradict their views on housing structure to that of the patriarchal ideology visible in the housing structure. It is through the scholarship of feminists that Hayden examines how housing represented a patriarchal ideology, but with changes, it could reflect a woman’s freedom from the house and the required housework (Hayden, 1982). Examining the renovations/restorations that the homeowners conducted can be symbolic of breaking away from what was socially acceptable for a women and how they made their space work to fit their lifestyle and
At the University of West Florida we wanted to allow students, faculty, staff and community of Pensacola to help volunteer to maintain the garden and enjoy learning about the different food systems.(The Voyager.) The University of West Florida community garden was created in 2009 it gave the opportunity to students and staff that were interested in learning or teaching the right way to sustain food systems. To help students and encourage healthy eating by increasing access to fruits and vegetables to our campus. Helping us students develop leadership and increase respect and concern for the natural world. (The Voyager.)
In the 1800’s ladies were required to stay in the particular place in American culture, which was known as “ladies’ circle”. While the “men’s circle” was the bigger open universe of work and legislative issues outside the house, “ladies circle” was the private universe of the family and the home. In her home, a lady should bring up and ensure her kids, to
