As I read Krakovsky’s article, I realized that how hard to manage the goals and overcome my weakness and temptations. Krakovsky said: “The highest opinions of their self- restraint were most likely to give in to temptation” (41) imagining that we are on the boat in the center of a river. There are three branches in front indicating which way you are going therefore you which way is the right way. To implement my aim, I spend one hour to watch TV a day. When it has an interesting show and I want to see a little bit, I will remind myself by open the schedule note- book to check do I have something to do, or have I finish the to- do list. Furthermore, another helpful suggestion I can learn from Krakovsky is imaging to the result of actions and gain motivations from negative effect can assist me maintain my plan better. For instance, although I know I just have one hour to read a comic, I usually spend more time. At this time, I think that if I just read comic without preparing for tomorrow test, I will be fail. Thanks to Krakovsky article, I can manage my time and keep doing my plan better. Also, another precious Krakovsky’s advice I think I can learn is creating our confidence by start in small aims. When I was almost ten years old, my family usually went to beach every morning. This time my mom was on a swimming course, she just knew some basic concept to breath and move in the water. This was a day my mom told me she felt a little bit tired, but she still swam to exercise. She met a dangerous whirl although that was a shallow area. Luckily, my dad was near that. Later, she scared water, beach, or pool. But she wanted to complete her course and she did not give up. The first day, she put her legs in to warm water. Then she gradually slow swam with time increases day by day. After her effort, she go over her water fear, and can swim normally. For me, to a big target that manage time better, I plan to leave one hour to read comic and relax every day, choose the TV programs are not addict, make away the series movies, study at least three hours a day, thirty minutes to read book and wake up at 6 am. By trying to implement small steps, I increase confidence, advance my plan, and am nearer to my goal.

Nearly everyone in the modern world has heard of the term self-control, a seemingly non-important or uninteresting topic of interest. However, self-control has been related to having one of the most significant impacts on a person. Even some have gone as far to say that self-control is the “biggest predictor of a successful and satisfying life” (Pinker 1), which are bold words for a topic that many merely disregard. The idea of self-control is a concept coined in the Victorian era, and appears immensely throughout the novel, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, written by R.F. Baumeister & J. Tierney. Essentially a self-help book, ‘Willpower’ provides explanations for why humans are doing the things that they do, and why people aren’t always as virtuous as they may be expected to be. Self-control affects many facets of a person’s life, and by looking at how it is presented in psychology, and in Baumeister and Tierney’s novel, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, one will see the correlations and differences between modern research and historical perspectives on the idea of self-control, and ultimately decide if the idea of self-control is an inherent trait or a learned condition.

Every individual has an inner drive to succeed over some challenge in their life. Individuals can experience motivation in different ways, whether it is from a good or bad situation. Even though good influences do have an impact on our lives, motivation is found to have a stronger impact from negative experiences. Negative people, especially, can have a huge influence on our lives, but this negativity can be turned into something useful and good. It is this motivation that keeps us striving to achieve our goal and which also promotes our nature of self-confidence and self-efficacy. A strong confidence and self-efficacy inspires an individual to take action and partake in change. These experiences enable us to self-evaluate ourselves and help us realize that each of us are able to live a happy and better life. It was not too long before I discovered the faults in my erroneous living. I finally realized, and truly not a moment too soon, that if I did not start living for the present, my future would soon become my neglected present. I would have wasted my life doing meaningless things and I would have no experience to share with anyone who may be interested in the uneventful life I had led. After I came to this startling revelation, I grew even more apathetic in my depression. I truly felt that there was nothing I could do to remedy this situation and was at a total loss for solutions. Soon enough, though, I concluded that there was no alternative to hard work to change the current state of affairs in my life. It was then that I truly embarked on the most difficult journey of my life thus far. This being the journey of self-alteration and successfully changing my own behavioral patterns.
I’ve learned that God wants us to live our lives by pursuing our deepest desires; he does not have a blueprint made for us and we don’t have a predestined path to take. Although, coming to realize your deepest desires and your unique gift to God and the world can be challenging. God wants us to figure it out – he made us to be free. This can seem overwhelming, because most people think they know what they want and have their lives all figured out before realizing they made a wrong choice and are unhappy. In chapter 3 of “The Messy Quest for Meaning”, Stephen Martin also stresses the importance of desire. One quote from the book that really caught my attention was, “if we had a week in which we were totally free to do the things we enjoy, what would they be?” (62). This quote caught my attention because I think I would spend the week baking cookies or other food for people but I don’t know what that had to do with desire. The palmist changed and influenced the teenager’s mind and made him think differently about himself. The teenager began to think deeply about his future and what he should do after the palmist “…looked up and, in a solemn voice, spoke. “You will become an artist. When twenty-five, twenty-six, you're going to change very much. If you don't choose right, oh, so many regrets. But don't be afraid. Never be afraid. Move forward. Always. If you had more self-control you would eat better, exercise more often, avoid doing drugs and consuming alcohol, save more money for retirement, stop procrastinating on important tasks, and achieve our ambitions. This could help improve our lifestyle.
