Korean War
Did you know there was a whole war inside the Cold War? Where around two million civilians died. The Cold War was a time when the soviets were trying to spread communism. The U.S did not want communism to spread, so it became a race, or competition to gain power. Of course if you guys are having competition, you're going to be trash talking or in this case threatening. Now that I have gave your the background, time to go into the Korean War. A War that was inside the Cold War, I am going to tell you about how it started, the events, and the ending. After World War Two the Americans, and soviets have the control over Korea. This document was called NSC-68, whatever that means. Before McArthur got fired he was training the Koreans to fight in the war. He said he needs more than four week trained Koreans. On top of that American advisers said not more than half were ready for war. Koreans take over Seoul in there first push over there. One thing was that president Truman said was on November 30th, 1950 he said he was considering to use atomic bombs. Then president Truman said he wanted an offensive war, so the United Nations and Americans pushed back and took back Seoul their capital city. China was scared now, and helped the North Koreans out by fighting. This war was so bloody there were millions of deaths. In the first month alone 4000 tons of bombs were dropped. Knocking down city's on accident, it was a horrible time, and people in the U.S were protesting. So in 1951 they were talking about peace, but china, and soviets wanted POWs back the U.S said no. The big part of the end of the war was when Joseph Stalin died. The death rates were crazy too more than World War Two, and Vietnam. Joseph Stalin died of a stroke at age 74. In Moscow, with new leadership they moved more rapidly for peace. The ceasefire treaty ultimately signed on July 27, 1953. Fun fact is when the new leader came he only stayed tell 1964 then thrown out of
The Korean War changed the face of American Cold War diplomacy forever. In the midst of all the political conflict and speculation worldwide, the nation had to choose between two proposed solutions, each one hoping to ensure that communism didn?t sweep across the globe and destroy American ideals of capitalism and democracy. General Douglas MacArthur takes the pro-active stance and says that, assuming it has the capability, the U.S. should attack communism everywhere. President Harry Truman, on the other hand, believed that containing the Soviet communists from Western Europe was the best and most important course of action, and that eliminating communism in Asia was not a priority.
The United States vows to protect the democratic South Korea. American forces defend South Korea but are almost pushed on the peninsula . Douglas Mccarthur is in charge of the American forces. He stages an impressive counter attack that pushes the North Koreans all the way back to China. This is when China enters the warand pushes American forces back to the 38Th parallel. In 1953 , the war ended In a stalemate. (document C)
Most people know that the Korean War was started when, in 1950, the North Koreans (N.K) crossed over the 38th parallel and opened fire on the South Koreans (S.K). North Koreans wanted the land,,because of the resources on the land. What most people don't understand are the other hidden conflicts that contributed to the tension. The Cold War was going strong between the Soviet Union /China and the United States.

To begin with, the foreign policies that affected the United States during the 1950s and 1960s include: “containment,” “brinkmanship,” and “domino theory.” The concept of “containment” involved utilizing “firm” military, economic, and diplomatic tactics to halt the proliferation of communism, improve United States’ national security, and augment worldwide influence. In supplement of “containment,” U.S. involvement in Korea provided an example of how “containment” influenced the decision to enter the country. With China falling to communism at the hands of Mao Zedong, Korea was the next to become “infected.” Subsequently, Korea underwent a physical division, which resulted in the communist state of North Korea and the now vulnerable South Korea. Urgent to unify Korea as a communist nation, North Korea invaded South Korea and war broke out. In the midst of this, the United States had seen China fall to communism and now h...
However, there were some very close calls regarding nuclear weapons and the spreading of communism. The Cold War lasted from about 1947 until 1991 and during that time there were two additional wars fought; the Korean War and Vietnam War. The Korean started on June 25, 1950 when 75,000 North Korean soldiers crossed the 38th parallel which separated North and South Korea (Korean War). By July, American troops joined the war and the main purpose for this was to stop the spread of communism. The Korean War finally came to an end in 1953 and about 5 million troops and civilians lost their lives (Korean War). Overall, the war didn’t achieve much besides that communism did not spread to South Korea and to this day, North Korea and South Korea are still divided. The Vietnam War was another war that was fought in the time period during the Cold War. This war started on November 1, 1955 and lasted until April 30, 1975 with a total of 5 million casualties including American troops, Vietnamese soldiers, and Vietnamese citizens. In 1973, President Nixon ordered for the removal of all troops in Vietnam but many people did not agree with this back in America (Vietnam War). The war finally came to an end in 1975 when communist country North Vietnam seized control of South Vietnam and the country became unified as the socialist Republic of Vietnam
Later North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and entered South Korea. The United States responded by telling the United Nations to help South Korea. The United Nations did and they pushed North Korea so far back they hit the northern tip of China. China went into the war to protect its borders. At the end of the war, they went back to where they were in the beginning.
United States involvement during the Cold War began with the Korean War. The War started on June 25, 1950 when troops from North Korea entered the 38th parallel, which was the boundary established after World War II between North Korea and South Korea. The North was supported by the Soviet Union and People’s Republic of China, while the South was later supported by the U.S. and its allies. Their attack was one of the first military measures of the Cold War (“Korean War”). Once North Korea invaded South Korea, U.S. involvement took place to prevent further communist regime and their involvement aided in several military developments and also left lasting political and diplomatic affects during the Cold War.
Koreans were under Japanese rule for a long time. It was officially signed as a colony on August 22, 1910, but Japanese had been planning this annexation from 1876 the Japanese-Korea treaty of amity. Japanese plan of annexation started with this treaty. This treaty allowed Japanese to come to Korean harbors freely and this marked the end of Korea’s status as a protectorate of China. Also later on October 8th, 1895, Japanese minister Miura Goro plotted the assassination of Empress Myeongseong. With the assassination, Japanese were able to control the economy and military power and made the Koreans sig...
The Korean War started with North Korea’s invasion to the Pusan Perimeter, on June 25, 1950. North Korea's invasion was the first of four stages of the Korean war. The North Koreans called their invasion a violation of peace. When the invasion happened, the North had 135,000 soldiers. Since the South wasn’t prepared for war, troops from sixteen different countries fought alongside the South. Forty-one more countries got involved in the war by supplying the South with weapons and food.
and Soviet relations when Eisenhower took his presidency seemed to be optimistic because just weeks after he became President, the Soviets leader, Stalin died. The successors wanted negotiations in order to resolve east and west differences. Nikita Khrushchev took reign after Stalin’s death and he wanted to have a “peaceful coexistence”. However President Eisenhower was skeptical of the Soviets claim for this peaceful coexistence. Although skeptical Eisenhower met with Khrushchev and the western leaders in Switzerland, in July of 1955, making it the first meeting since 1945.
Truce talks began between the UN and the communists on July 10 though the fighting continued. The Battle for the Punchbowl was a successful attack on the communist forces as was the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. In both of these battles, many casualties occurred on the Chinese side. On October 8, the talks were broken off. Soon after, on March 28 of 1953, the Communists accepted a UN proposal to exchange sick and wounded prisoners. Within the next few months, truce talks resumed and an armistice was signed and the fighting was put to a permanent halt.
On 25 June 1950 one hundred and thirty five thousand North Korean soldiers crossed the 38th parallel and quickly advanced passed the poorly armed Southern forces . From the wests perspective this was a direct provocation by Communists, the rhetoric espoused by American repeated many of the messages in the Truman Doctrine. America was needed to protect democracy against the tyranny of communism.
South Korea, badly outnumbered and outgunned, began to retreat southward. Seoul, South Korea’s capital, fell in a matter of days. (Heritage, 2010). Taken by surprise, America wasted no time in sending reinforcements to help crippled South Korea. This began a costly and bloody three year war. In 1950 china intervened when the United Nations forces are deemed to overthrow North Korean forces. This move prolonged the war and made a wider war possible. It also marked the only time that Western forces directly battled a communist power (Heritage, 2010). At the end of the war in july of 1953, no peace treaty was signed. The conflict between North and South Korea lives on today, showing the impact of the Cold War across the globe even in present day. The Korean War was a huge turning point in the Cold War. It introduced the concept of limited war as a way to prevent an escalation to a nuclear war.
