SECTION B - Answering my question
I chose the Korean War which was a major reason for the permanent split of North and South Korea, and how South Korea has developed after that.
North and South Korea have apparent differences geographically, demographically, economically, and politically. Quite recently, North Korea tested a missile that landed in the sea between North Korea and Japan. The leaders of North Korea claim that they have nuclear weapons

with the ability of reaching the United States (US). During the second world war, Korea was under the control of Japan.
When the war ended in 1945 the Japanese forces had to leave Korea, and it was eventually divided into two spheres of influence. The North was controlled by the Soviet Union, and the South was controlled by the US. On June 25th 1950, the Korean War started when the North Korean Army crossed the 38th Parallel, and invaded the South. It lasted until 1953 when the two Koreas signed an agreement to stop fighting. Today, Korea is still divided. However, the two countries agreed to create a neutral zone called the Demilitarized Zone to separate each other.
Over three million Koreans died, millions of them were displaced, cities were destroyed, and the economy was in chaos. These frightful events happened consequently from the Korean War. The Koreans felt as though there was not enough money in the world to rebuild and revitalize their country. However, it wasn’t as bad for the North as they were recovering faster and better than the south. In fact after the Korean War, South Korea was one of the world's poorest countries with less than $100 per capita income. They had no economy to speak of, thus no foreign exchange. At this point, South Korea was in
devastation. South Korea’s president at the time, Park Chung-Hee, made the decision to re-establish full diplomatic relations with their former conquerors, Japan. Fortunately, both Japan and South Korea were hoping to put the past behind them. Therefore, the two countries quickly concluded to the agreement in which South Korea waived all of their prior claims against Japan, in exchange for a large amount of money which they would use to jumpstart their economy. Eventually the economy slowly began to recover, but there still wasn’t much to work with. Additionally, foreign aid and assistance came in from the IDA (International Development Association), the UNDP (United Nations Development Program), the ADB (Asian Development Bank), and the World Bank. In the 1960s, President Park launched economic and social development plans for the country, and soon the economy began to grow. Nevertheless, the lives of ordinary people were hardly affected until the 1970s. By the time of President Park’s death in 1979, the income was raised to over $1,500.
In the early 1960s the U.S. began sending military advisors to South Vietnam beginning the Vietnam War, arguably the most controversial war in United States history. This incident followed Vietnam gaining its independence from the French Empire’s Indochina in 1954. The nation soon split, creating a communist North Vietnam, and a noncommunist South Vietnam. In fear of communism spreading the U.S. supported South Vietnam and sent troops. As the incident dragged on it caused a huge anti-war movement and a lot of political turmoil. The troops were withdrawn in 1973, the whole country fell to communism, and the U.S. failed. How did a superpower such as the U.S. take defeat from a small country like Vietnam? Many have wondered and continue to wonder
Most people know that the Korean War was started when, in 1950, the North Koreans (N.K) crossed over the 38th parallel and opened fire on the South Koreans (S.K). North Koreans wanted the land,,because of the resources on the land. What most people don't understand are the other hidden conflicts that contributed to the tension. The Cold War was going strong between the Soviet Union /China and the United States.
The Korean War began when the North Koreans invaded South Korea across the 38th parallel on June 25, 1950. The North Korean forces fought their way to Pusan at the southern edge of the Korean peninsula. With the North Koreans controlling most of the peninsula, General Douglas MacArthur landed an amphibious assault at Inchon on September 15, 1950 and wrested control of South Korea from North Korean forces. After MacArthur’s forces marched to the northern border of Korea, China entered the war. After a major Chinese attack and a major American counter attack, the front of the war had a new stage, the Chosin Reservoir (Henretta, Edwards & Self 768).
During his rule there was decrease in trading because their main trading partner, the Soviet Union, had just collapsed. Not only that, but there were also numerous floods and droughts that occurred too. This left North Korea in famine, since there was only a certain amount of farming land, this left Kim Jong-Il to worry about his power. With the remaining amount of farming land, he instead decided to use those resources for the military instead of the citizens experiencing famine at the time. After this incident, in 2003, it was found out that North Korea was producing nuclear weapons, but Kim Jong-Il said it was only for security reasons.
The war in Korea is often referred to as the “Forgotten War” because it is not mentioned often and is often argued that it was meaningless and unnecessary. The Korean War was significant to shaping Canada’s military and foreign politics though. It has shaped us into a peaceful nation with concerns for the well being of people in foreign countries.
Japan was imperializing late nineteenth century to early twentieth century. Korea was a Japanese colony. After World War II, the Japanese had to get rid of the colony. North Korea became Communist. South Korea wanted to be democratic. Later North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and entered South Korea. The United States answered by telling the United Nations to help South Korea. The United Nations did and they pushed North Korea so far back they hit the northern tip of china. China went into the war to protect their borders. At the end of the war they went back to where they were in the beginning. Neither side won. Between 1992 -1995 North Korea did many good things. It says on BBC News Asia that North Korea became involved in the United Nations and they agree to freaze nuclear weapon program those where the good they did but then there was a huge flood that created a food shortage this was also on BBC Asia. In 2002 it say in BBC Asia that nuclear tension increased in North Korea and United States. The North Korean communist nation controls the citizen’s religious beliefs so they have to belief in jushe which is a belief that they have to look up to North Korean leaders. The North Korean leaders make sure the citizens of North Korea belief in it if they don...
United States involvement during the Cold War began with the Korean War. The War started on June 25, 1950 when troops from North Korea entered the 38th parallel, which was the boundary established after World War II between North Korea and South Korea. The North was supported by the Soviet Union and People’s Republic of China while the South was later supported by the U.S and its allies. Their attack was one of the first military measures of the Cold War (“Korean War”). Once North Korea invaded South Korea, U.S. involvement took place to prevent further communist regime and their involvement aided in several military developments and also left lasting political and diplomatic affects during the Cold War.
The United States had multiple factors and circumstances compelling them to potentially declaim regions in the time period of 1890’s to the 1900s. Originating before the Spanish and American war, yellow journalism provoked the general public. Yellow journalism promoted horrendous photograph of soldiers and dying with stories. When Americans did win the war they decided to occupy Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba from the Spanish marking the original territories gained. Wealth and its own American interests sparked the claiming of Hawaiian and the Philippines. Once overthrowing the queen in Hawaii, it was used for its own benefits such as the sugar exports and the naval base it could form. When “intending” to free the Philippines: America realistically
The United States fought the war in Vietnam to contain communism. The spread of communism scared the American people and the politicians who wanted to promote democracy in the world. By the time of American withdrawal, the nation had split and imploded due to many differing views on the war. The United States withdrew from the war due to the absence of public support, the antiwar movement, and difficulty in winning a guerilla war in Vietnam. The United States officially began the Vietnam War on 4/1/1965 to support South Vietnam fighting against communist North Vietnam.
The Korean war was a short but hard fought war that created a permanent line between two countries. Now we have communist North Korea and the Republic of South Korea. Overshadowed by the Vietnam War and World War II, the Korean War also became known as “The Forgotten War” or “The Unknown War” but it still has important lasting effects on the world.
Korea was in a state of disarray. Not in the way that you may be confused about what happened, but where political alliances and the division of Korea upset many people. The division of Korea was decided at the Potsdam Conference, without the consent of the Korean people (Korean War, Wikipedia). When Japan was defeated, they lost all of the land they had gained including Korea. With the land being split between the 38th parallel, North Korea was weak with a bad leader, looking for more power. Russia and China were willing to help. US saw South Korea as a victim to the Cold War and was trying to help South Korea (Schnabel 6). Both the United States and the Soviet Union occupied the Korean peninsula in hopes of turning them to their beliefs in government. The United States went to the United Nations to determine the issue of a divided Korea. The United Nations Commission determined they needed to hold elections in Korea. The communists in North Korea refused to allow the election because the did not want to be threatened by democracy. The communists in South Korea did not like the thought and boycotted it. The regime in South Korea was shaped by the anti-communist Syngman Rhee. The Soviet Union put Kim ll-Sung as head of North Korea, who was very, very weak. The North Korean Army invaded South Korea on June 25 1950 with varying reasons. The Chinese ...
...t (Brown, p.17). On October 7 the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling for unification of Korea and authorized MacArthur to send his forces into North Korea. The North Korean capital of Pyongyang fell on October 19, and the allied UN troops flooded north effectively unopposed. They pushed the North Korean forces to the Yalu River, which formed the North Korean border with the region of China.
The south was left with close to nothing since the North had the countries power, coals deposits and industry base. At this time the Japanese technicians left and caused the hindering of industrial production. This lead to higher inflation rates that caused the food prices to rise. During the civil war in the 1950’s caused refugees to increase and hurt the economy, and food distribution. The state was not able to provide enough food to its people, could not provide shelter or sufficient amounts of water. The United States gave South Korea almost one hundred percent of its aid. The goal was to economically stabilize the payments support known as the Commodity Import Program (CIP). The aid moved toward production and reconstruction. The aid was focusing on keeping the people fed and provided basic needs. The united states helped militarily as well to protect the South Korean state from the North. At the 38th Parallel, South Korea is protected by the United States and South Korean military. This was to help protect them from the threats from the North. Through the United States help, they have had a positive impact on the South Korean
The Korean War is often called The Forgotten War. it's between America’s biggest war, World War II and Vietnam War, our longest war. Korea sometimes gets overlooked at times, it needs to be remembered about the conflict that began 50 years ago The Korean War, which ended just over 60 years ago, never resonated with the American public in the way that World War II did, despite the fact that nearly 2 million Americans served as part of a United Nations forcing the three-year fight against the North Koreans and Chinese, and some 37,000 died. Maybe it was because The Korean War wasn’t a “declared war” and ended in a different way .The Korean War has been called a “forgotten war”by so many people since at least October 1951 when U.S. News &
The Korean War explicitly portrayed the atrocious battle between both the North and South side which gave the United Nations its military role for the first time, thus expanding the war from a domestic to an international scale. Sometimes called “The Forgotten War”, the Korean War was mainly overshadowed in historical terms by the conflicts that occurred before and after it, World War II and the Vietnam War. The Korean War had raged for years without a true resolution and after years of battles, even the compromise that was made was not a complete one. The current situation in North and South Korea is quite volatile. In order to apprehend the Korean War, one has to look at events that took place before the war, how the war was conducted and the aftermath of the War.
