Probably one of the reasons why Koreans are doing so much better than Americans is because of their Confucian cultural background. For Koreans they have this strong belief drive called the “Confucian drive to succeed through education means [the] parents have impressed on [them] from birth the absolute importance of excellent grades” (Yi, 190). Education over in Korea is really competitive and is taken very seriously because of the family’s pride. According to U.S. Department of Education, it shows that parents involvement in America requirements, including compacts are low compare to other countries (Avallone, Carson, Henderson, and Whipple, 49). Studies show parent involvement is a very important factor that plays a part in the child’s success in school. Even if the family has a terrible income and background, parents who are involved in their kid’s education, the child is likely to “earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs, be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school” (“Research Spotlight on Parental Involvement in Education”). Though our nation has tried to solve this issue through the No Child Left Behind legislation, which is mandate “to aims for all children to achieve academic proficiency and gain the educational skills necessary to succeed later in life”. Growing up in the American education system, I always took my education for granted. My mother would always say, “You know how much people would want to be in your place and go to school?” In Chinese culture, education is the only way to achieve upward social mobility and leave the poor social economic class; whether you are rich or poor, you must have education and go to school. High School students are pressured into studying for a test that will decide their entire life, This test will affect what job a person can get, what friends they are able to make and who they will be allowed to marry. In The Smartest Kids in the World, Amanda Ripley reports “This competition followed very explicit rules: score above a certain number on the college exam, and you were automatically admitted to a top university. Forever after, you would be paid more than others, even for doing the same work”(Ripley 59). Literacy is most commonly understood as reading and writing. But before children can read and write, they need to learn about sound, words, language, books and stories (Raising Children, 2015). Children begin to develop and gain knowledge quite differently and with support and developmentally appropriate learning skills children will also come to understand the connection between letters and sounds. Literacy development or early literacy is the most essential in the first three years of life as it the earliest experience children have with language, sound and the positive interactions between child and adult. The authors included a study that made use of participants from Japan and America. Mothers and their children were interviewed regarding poor performance on grades. The Japanese mothers connected poor grades to little effort while American mothers connected poor grades to numerous reasons: little effort, lack of ability, poor training, bad luck etc. The children of these mothers were asked for their opinion too and both groups of children had the same opinions as their mothers. This idea of effort versus ability strongly ties into the two opposing perspectives of self. While children in Japan have been born and bred to understand the importance of obtaining good grades in order to keep their family happy, maintain a balance in their environment and fulfill their social obligation to others, little attention is paid to the child’s ability as an individual. I believe that when it comes to learning and education, no child is the same. All children learn on different levels and should not be held accountable for falling behind if they lack ability or had a nightmare the night before the test causing them to forget some of the studied material. If children are being held to such high standards of achievement all the time, this can be detrimental to the child’s sense of self. The child may feel pressure from teachers, families and peers that the child could become depressed or suicidal as in the case of some Korean Students. Ultimately, I believe more flexible attitude is good for a child if they should they come home with a poor grade one day. In today’s society, education has become one of the biggest parts of people’s lives. In South Korea, studies have shown that the number of hours spent studying by students every day is 3hours longer than those students in other OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries. This demonstrates the social aspect of pressure of achieving perfect grades and a higher level of education (“Korean Youth Study Longest Hours”, Aug. 10, 2009 ). Also, Korean students have suffered very high rates of stress due to pressure from parents of receiving high academic scores. This ongoing problem of an excessive education which each student in South Korea has to withstand, not only hurts students physically, it also hurts them mentally. This may explain why there is such a high number of suicidal rates among youth in South Korea. The suicide rate for every 100,000 people is 27.4 (“Youth Suicides in South Korea”, Sep. 10, 2013). It is very ironic because people get an education to gain confidence, achievement, creativity, to learn how to respect and to learn to be with others, and most importantly to be happy. Yet, the reality in South Korea is drastically different as shown here. That is the reason why the Korean education system needs solutions to deal with these problems.
The American Dream is where people from other countries can find new life and start over with new and better opportunities. It is possible because the Declaration of Independence protects it of the people’s rights. The government makes it possible of how it is run by the people. Everyone that is in the United States or came to it has their own point of view of the American Dream. Either they have opportunities, new jobs, new life, safe place anything they believe in.
Another factor is that Korea’s heavy investment in human capital has led its education to rely heavily on rote learning and curricula cramming for the national university entrance exam. This leaves little room for creative thinking and an exploratory spirit . The government’s remedies include investments (over the past decade) to improve the education system, as well as work with industry to create more specialized curricula to smoothen the transition from university to industry.

To conclude, my research shows a clear link between parental involvement and children performing better in school. Children who's parents are involved in their education are showing better performance and are achieving higher grades. They also show better behaviour, more enthusiasm, ambition and higher levels of engagement. compared with children who's parent are not involved in their education. My research also shows that parental involvement has great benefits for both children and parents in many ways, so much so that the most effective schools are those who encouraged parents to be involved.
When schools, parent, families and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer and enrol in other learning program establish by the school. Regardless of the parent’s education and family income, it has been found that parent involvement affects minority student’s academic achievement across all races.
Parental involvement promotes the social growth of a child. Children whose parents are involved in their education have many advantages. They have better grades, test scores, long-term academic achievement, attitudes and behavior than those with disinterested mothers and fathers (Gestwicki, 2001). Parents becoming involved in their child's schooling creates extra sources of social constraint to influence the child's behavior (McNeal, 2001). For example, parents talking to their children and becoming involved in the school conveys a message to the child of education being important. Parents should be talking with your children's teacher and letting her know about your family. The more she knows about your child, the better she will be able to connect with your child.
