William Shakespeare’s infamous Tragedy of King Lear is as much about political authority as family dynamic. Although regarded as one of the most emotionally difficult, and portrays a world lacking of love, in which humanity is detached from any spiritual, higher being, there is still glimmers of goodness that can be discovered. While other discussions of King Lear focus on the bleakness and despair of the environment as well as the characters, especially Lear, it is arguable that this play is not an exemplification of a work lacking in morals, but of the reenchantment of charity, especially forgiveness as a pushback against the violence. Through this reading, a considerable amount of credit is given to Cordelia, and the powerful emotional impact she provides.
The setting of King Lear is one spoiled with materialism, and is portrayed clearly within the first scene. King Lear is demanding his daughters proclaim their affections towards, in order to divvy up the land of his kingdom upon his retirement. Upon this forcefulness, Regan and Goneril are willing to falsely profess their love towards Lear, with clearly negative intentions. Their deceit is established early in the play. Cordelia, Lear’s third daughter, refuses to comply immediately. She will not participate because she understands the vanity, although her feelings towards her father are the most genuine; she believes that there are no words to accurately express her love. Lear’s inflamed insecurities cause him to dismiss Cordelia, refusing her an inheritance. Her initial refusal is minimal as a means to convey the depth of concern she has for her father, as she witnesses her sisters fake their admiration for material wealth and power.

The ideology of these men, and their interpretation of naturalness, is contrasted with the children’s, which is one of fluidity. Edgar believes the working of the universe to be just, throughout the story’s despair. Edmund, Goneril, and Regan are associated with wild, animal imagery. The animal language is meant to be derogatory, to contrast the concept of natural social order. This is a way to describe the character’s negative, and unnatural behavior. When Lear address Regan and Goneril’s shift into aggression once receiving their material desires from their father, he describes Goneril with animal behavior.
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a play filled with backstabbing and deceit, but compassion and forgiveness are the prevailing themes hovering above the rest. People in the book are engrossed in a culture which lets women do no more than cook, tend the house and read. Women and girls in this culture often become bored with their lives and attempt to find outlets and this happened in the puritan lifestyle of which the Crucible is engrossed in. While writing in seventeenth century England, Shakespeare undoubtedly had the church on his mind during many of his writing endeavors. King Lear permits no exceptions. Though it has often been fractured and split into many different realms in order to fit the lenses through which it has been criticized, (such as feminism, psychoanalysis, and cultural materialism) it is evident that King Lear places an exaggerated emphasis on the idea of separation and forgiveness, both of which are extremely stressed concepts within the Bible as well. In her article, “King Lear and the Prodigal Son,” Susan Snyder asserts that King Lear parallels the Biblical parable of The Prodigal son, found within the book of Luke. This parable is regarded as one of Jesus’ most famous parables, as it refers to salvation as something to be obtained by faith rather than good works. The Protestant Reformation marked the first time that this idea had been put to practice within churches, as the former corrupt Catholic Church had been known for selling indulgences to pay for sin. Needless to say, this parable was probably a heavily sought out item during this time in which Shakespeare was writing. Through Cordelia’s meek, mild, and at times gender-reversed portrayal and King Lear’s childish antics and love for immediate gratification, Snyder’s “King Lear and the Prodigal Son” perfectly illustrates the blatant similarities between the play and the parable.
The focus in this scene is to show that Lear has so much pride that it made him blind to Cordellia’s love and the reason to why he loved. His pride made him think that flattery is love thus he gave everything to Goneril and Regan. This was his biggest mistake, leaving him completely dependent upon his two hateful daughters. He kicked Cordellia out so there is no hope of him being helped now.
For the rearrangement of the bonds, it is necessary that those based on money, power, land, and deception be to abandoned. In the case of Lear and Goneril and Regan, his two daughters have deceived their father for their personal gain. Furthermore, they had not intended to keep the bond with their father once they had what they wanted. Goneril states "We must do something, and i' th' heat." (I, i, 355), meaning that they wish to take more power upon themselves while they can. By his two of his daughters betraying him, Lear was able to gain insight that he is not as respected as he perceives himself to be. The relationship broken between Edmund his half- bother, Edgar and father, Glouster is similarly deteriorated in the interest of material items. These individuals valued money over familial ties; King Lear originally valued power and compliance over his own blood. The self-discovery of King Lear exemplifies the fact that humans are far more valuable than money or power in attempt to set an example for humanity. These lessons still ring true in more modern times; famed psychiatrist Sigmund Freud warned against accepting flattery as genuine and giving away one's possessions during his or her lifetime. Lear's self-discovery came too late to save his daughters; the play seems to encourage humanity to have its own self-discovery before it disavows its Cordelias in the pursuit of niceties.
In Shakespeare's “King Lear”, the tragic hero is brought down, like all tragic heroes, by one fatal flaw; in this case it is pride, as well as foolishness. It is the King's arrogant demand for absolute love and, what's more, protestations of such from the daughter who truly loves him the most, that sets the stage for his downfall. Cordelia, can be seen as Lear’s one true love, and her love and loyalty go not only beyond that of her sisters but beyond words, thus enraging the proud King Lear whose response is: "Let pride, which she calls plainness, marry her". Here, Lear's pride is emphasized as he indulges in the common trend of despising in others what one is most embarrassed of oneself.
King Lear of Britain has decided to abdicate his throne. In order to bestow his kingdom between his three daughters; Goneril, Regan and Cordelia he calls them together. His intentions are to split the kingdom between them based on each’s expression of love for him. The two older daughters sweetly talk their way in their father’s heart for sizable kingdoms. Cordelia however, the youngest and Lear’s favorite, sees the sinister motivations of her sisters and tells her father of her deep true feelings. Lear not hearing the sweet words that he expected, is so dismayed that he banishes her. She leaves the country to marry the King of France.
Although Lear proposes to his daughters that if they tell him how much they love him, he will in return divide parts of the kingdom for them, he has in fact already allocated them each a portion. He indicates this in the opening dialogue between the earls of Gloucester and Kent (1.1.1 -- 6). What prompts him to engage his children in this sham contest is evidently nothing more than vanity. Perhaps all three daughters recognize the contest for what it truly ism but Gone rill and Regan go along with the game anyway, professing in hyperbolic terms what they say they feel for their father. Cordelia refuses. In her asides to the audience she indicates her dilemma: “What shall Cordelia speak? Love, and be silent” (1.1 57). When Lear turns to her and asks what she can say to win “A third more opulent than your sisters,” she replies simply, nothing, my lord” (1.1.82). Asked again, she reiterates her answer, to which Lear responds in a rage.

Lear's relationship with his three daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia, is, from the beginning, very uncharacteristic of the typical father-daughter relationship. It's clear that the king is more interested in words than true feelings, as he begins by asking which of his daughters loves him most. Goneril and Regan's answers are descriptive and sound somewhat phony, but Lear is flattered by them. Cordelia's response of nothing is honest; but her father misunderstands the plea and banishes her. Lear's basic flaw at the beginning of the play is that he values appearances above reality. He wants to be treated as a king and to enjoy the title, but he doesn't want to fulfill a king's obligations. Similarly, his test of his daughters demonstrates that he values a flattering public display of love over real love. He doesn't ask "which of you doth love us most," but rather, "which of you shall we say doth love us most?" (I.i.49). It would be simple to conclude that Lear is simply blind to the truth, but Cordelia is already his favorite daughter at the beginning of the play, so presumably he knows that she loves him the most. Nevertheless, Lear values Goneril and Regan's fawning over Cordelia's sincere sense of filial duty.
To the general population, understanding William Shakespeare is considered an impossible task. One feels unable to move past the slight language barrier and dive into the truly modern meaning. Though the language of Shakespeare may seem incomprehensible, Shakespeare’s King Lear is relatable to modern life; property is still being divided, men are still growing old and losing sanity, and siblings will always have a rivalry between them.
The first flaw in King Lear is his arrogance, which results in the loss of Cordelia and Kent. It is his arrogance in the first scene of the play that causes him to make bad decisions. He expects his favorite, youngest daughter to be the most worthy of his love. His pride makes him expect that Cordelia’s speech to be the one filled with the most love. Unfortunately for King Lear’s pride, Cordelia replies to his inquisition by saying, “I love your majesty/According to my bond and nothing less';(1.1.100-101). Out of pride and anger, Lear banishes Cordelia and splits the kingdom in half to the two evil sisters, Goneril and Regan.
