Kids growing up in the 90’s were able to run around all over town, but today kids don’t get to have as much freedom. It’s our duty to raise kids who won’t be afraid of everything and anything. A line needs to be drawn between too much fear and not enough. The media is a main cause to why parents are more fearful of their kids today than ever before, especially if they aren’t white. Fear is important to have today in society, but it’s becoming out of hand. To first start off with, parents’ main concerns for their children are being bullied, kidnapped, shot, struggling with anxiety or depression, and problems with drugs and alcohol. Some problems they have the most issues with would be based on their ethnicity. For example, black youths are
far more likely than white or Hispanic youths to be injured by gunfire or fatally shot. Social media gives a passageway for bullies, kidnappers, and news to be out where anyone can receive it. I understand why parents would be terrified on what goes on in their kids’ lives, so they try and regulate their activity. After they stop allowing them to go to certain places or do fun things is where fear becomes a problem. All kids want to do is to live their lives as a kid while they can, but in this day and age it’s becoming more difficult everyday. When the TV is on in the other room all that is being heard is an uproar of the same “horror” story on what happened in some place states away. Parents don’t care that it wasn’t in their town or around it, all they hear is “danger”. Another instance could be on Snapchat, which is an app where anyone can send a picture to certain people on their friends list for up to ten seconds then vanish after. This app also allows anyone on the friend list to view where someone is. Previously mentioned about kidnapping, predators find their victims easier and faster.
This brings about another issue: children’s protection from this kind of content. More needs to be done to protect children’s eyes from inappropriate things on the TV, billboards, music, and other forms of media. Unfortunately, because society has gone as far as it has today, it will be very difficult to take a step back and re examine the effects violent media will have on children. People seem to care less and less about what children see. The need for protection from this type of content relies solely on the parents. Parents must take it upon themselves to guard their children against things on the media that they should not be seeing. Parents should be given different options with technology to help monitor the content their kids are allowed to see and what they are
Violent Media is Good for Kids, by Gerard Jones, is an article which makes many claims to support the argument that a controlled amount of violence could be beneficial for a young, developing child. Even though the topic of this article can be controversial, the claims serve to support the argument in many noteworthy ways. It is written in such a way that it tells a story, starting when the author was a child and working its way to adulthood. In this case, the author uses, what I believe to be just the correct amount of rhetorical strategy, and fulfills his goal of writing the article. This argument is interesting and, at the same time, effective.
Youth at risk is an ultimate fear, for our parents, teachers, political parties, churches and so forth. From teen gambling to kids gone missing to school shootings, the media has done it again by reinforcing fears into our minds that there is an epidemic of youth violence. I believe this is because we as people never know exactly what children are going to do.
In today’s technological society it is hard to imagine that trivial things from the past like discrimination or prejudice are still present, but they are. Yes we still have racism, but for the most part this is only a problem of the less educated and vocal minority. There is a different prejudice that is deep rooted in this land of freedom and prosperity. This prejudice is sexism.
Family environment and the press are two major influences resulting in the recent tragic school shootings. As much as society continues to focus the killing rampages on factors such as television and music, what children are exposed to in reality contributes to the violence. The most recent school shooting in Michigan involved a six-year-old first grader who killed a classmate with a .22 caliber pistol. The news coverage had vanished after two or three days, and I was left wondering what had happened. Considering the fact that the media wore the Columbine incident out, I wanted to know why they did not pay more attention to this school shooting. As evidence did arrive, it was discovered that the child lived in a household where cocaine, heroin, and many other illegal drugs were commonplace. Also in this “home” guns were easily accessible to the child. Children growing up in this type of environment certainly are likely to be held accountable for future violence. Even though I am against the news media presenting too much school violence, Americans should have been deeply disturbed by this shooting because of the child’s young age. The Michigan shooting should have enlightened Americans to the dilemma we face in this country. Two weeks after the Columbine High School shooting, information on the mass murder was still being broadcast on television. The press was feeding young viewers ideas on how to kill their classmates. News was reported how the teenage murderers acquired information regarding building bombs, obtaining guns, smuggling guns into the school, and proceeding to kill their classmates. A mentally unstable teenager could simply watch these news reports and write a book entitled, “How to Slay Your Classmates”. This onslaught was ridiculous and the news coverage should not have been permitted to continue for countless weeks. Society has determined three reasons on which to blame the shootings. First, the nation blamed it on television’s violent programs. Following that, Americans gave the music recording companies the evil eye as well as attacking the gun manufacturers. All of these reasons involve material objects that are unable to think for themselves. Televisions and CD players do not control themselves, people control them. Finally, boundaries controlling the television programs children view should be set by the parents. The same explanation applies to firearms. How can it be a gun’s fault that a person killed another human being?
The way that we are taught as children, that “adults will do everything in their power to protect you from harm,” (Lukianoff/Haidt) ultimately is something that should, but is not, let go of when age increases. Likewise, this issue has become a very voiced problem at the University of Oklahoma. Recently, the President of the university took “aim at the rising political correctness on campuses across the country with a sharply-worded blog post calling kids "self-absorbed" For example, it is shown in the first article that many people propose that “helping people avoid the things they fear is misguided” and that “”the presumption that students need to be protected rather than challenged in a classroom is at once infantilizing and anti-intellectual” (Lukianoff/Haidt) due to the fact that it never allows someone to face and ultimately get over the fear. Another new idea that has surfaced which as potential to be harmful for personal growth, especially at this age, is the creation “safe places” being implemented across many college campuses.

By doing this, they can really scare off their teenagers from talking to them, and make them anxious. They would constantly wonder if their parents were looking over their shoulder, watching everything they did. This would put a lot of emotional pressure on these teenagers, who are already dealing with lots of emotions through hormones and puberty changes. The children would begin to look for new ways to keep their life private from their parents, which can lead to things such as creating fake accounts to hide their activity online. The best thing for a person to do to help solve the problem of child abuse is to keep an open eye out for signs. The issue of school safety has become a controversial topic in the United States, due to tragic acts of violence occurring on a daily basis. American citizens should never have to cope with the negative impact of school violence, no matter how often they hear about the tragedies (Jones, "Parents" 1). In the past, schools were viewed as a safe place for children to get an education. Recently, the concern over violence in schools has taken a toll on many parents, school administrators, and legislatures (Eckland 1). Studies have shown that there are over 3 million acts of violence in American public schools each year. Not all occurrences are serious and deadly, but they occur on a daily basis throughout our country (Jones, “School” 6). This has caused many parents to worry about the well-being of their children while they are in class. This has also led to an increase in questions and concerns by parents and guardians. Many people have asked, “What are you doing about safety and security on my child’s campus” (Schimke 2). School violence is the cause of elevated worry and fear for their children, and school districts should enforce better security.
There are many different things that I take into consideration when it comes to parenting. Parents have many different responsibilities but there are three in particular that I think are very important. Being a good role model is important, as well as listening to your children and disciplining them appropriately. If you want to be a good parent you have to put your kids first.

However, caution needs to be put in place to prevent the youth and children from participating in actions they do not have a clue on but do them on the justifications of the actions watched over the media (Wells & Hakanen, 1997). Mass media will remain beautiful but when precautionary measures are not in place, it becomes ugly.
