The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, is no stranger to controversy. He makes wild statements and is infamous for his flagrant use of lies. Trump is a man obsessed with public perception, yet as the President he has the authority to forward the highly divisive such as the Keystone XL pipeline that his predecessor had vetoed. Many powerful and well-known organizations, such as GreenPeace, have taken up arms against this position, but they will likely not be enough to stop its construction. Keystone XL is an extension to the existing Keystone pipeline owned by the Calgary based energy company, TransCanada Corporation . Known as “the most visible environmental group in the world” GreenPeace has been active in implementing sustainable initiatives and criticizing government policy world wide. Originally know as “Don’t Make A Wave”, the organization was formed in 1970 by members of the Sierra Club Irving Stowe and Dorothy Stowe , who were disillusioned by the inaction of the club after protesting a nuclear test in Alaska. While they failed to stop the test from taking place , this only served to galvanize the group and soon grew into a multinational organization tackling issues all over the globe. Climate change became one of the key tenets of GreenPeace early on and in 1997 they were awarded he Ozone Award by the United Nations Environmental Programme for the awareness they raised and contributions to public concern about this building problem . Trump is obsessed with both being liked and being right. In the past, he has shown a distinct ability to completely shift his opinion on issues, seemingly forgetting his previous statements, for his own gain. His base support has been shown to be reactionary, so if a black and white narrative with climate change being the enemy, was adopted by them then a shift may come. The Chinese could even be the ones causing it. Of course, this is not only a long shot but also false. Alternatively, if awareness of climate change and scientific literacy became prominent within his base supporters then, to remain popular with his base, he may shift his position. This would take extensive and sweeping changes to the education system, and would likely not become an effective strategy while the Trump presidency remains or while Keystone XL is being built. Over time though, it would change the positions of those who trump has used and we could then move forward to tackle this collective problem as a unified
