It has ben a tremendous journey raising Kevin Jr throughout these years. From the moment he was conceived I knew that he would be a special boy. We were there to hear him say his first words, then eventually taking his first steps. We were also there when he began his educational journey throughout school. We watched as he developed physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally throughout the years. With the addition of another child, April, we thought we were going to be a very happy family however, that wasn’t the case as my partner and I split up. Even through the hard times Kevin Jr was as resilient as can be and still managed to be the special boy that we always knew he would be. ENDURING AND SURPRISING CHARACTERISTICS: The most enduring characteristic that Kevin Jr showed was his shyness among the peers around, around …show more content…
Kevin Jr showed 2 kinds of factors throughout his development that my partner and I weren’t able to control. One was the behavioral change that happens among teens throughout this American Culture. Every teen hits that point where they are seeking autonomy in order to become much more independent from their parents. No matter how hard you try you can’t really control that it’s going to happen. At some point your child will challenge your authority from time to time. The other factor was Kevin Jr’s shyness, which he probably got from me. No matter how hard my partner and I tried we couldn’t change that aspect of Kevin Jr’s life. Now that isn’t as hardcore as the other factors could be but I still wanted Kevin Jr to be much more social than what he was. These factors don’t help the parents in real life because they can’t do much to control them which in turn must be much more stressful. I know that for a fact from my own experience my mother had to deal with the same issues when sister was a teen and when I was a teen in the search for
The Millers appear to be permissive parents; therefore, the Millers seem to support Kevin in his behavior and his maladaptive ways of coping. Permissive parents are high on warm; subsequently, they are low in setting demands, rules, and guidelines. Kevin is obliviously gifted and talented, and
Traditionally Kevin, his Father, Gary Hazen, and his brother, Gary David, all go out on the first hunt together at two in the morning after a breakfast of homemade pancakes, but this year is different. Kevin wants to break free from the life of his family and doesn't want to go on the hunt with his father and brother. He can't comprehend why his father is so set in his ways and Kevin doesn’t want to live his father's life. Gary is a forester and finds it important to work hard to most provide for his family and to conserve nature. Kevin, like most kids, doesn’t understand his fathers way of thinking, and wants to live his own life. A life away from Lost Lake. Kevin attempts to break free of his fathers lifestyle by attending a nearby college, in hopes to eventually become teacher. Gary isn't happy with his son's decision to go to school and Kevin can't understand his fathers views, which causes the two to butt heads throughout the novel. But a tragic accident suddenly leaves Kevin fighting for his and his fathers lives. Having to use the knowledge and skills that his father had taught Kevin suddenly suddenly realizes his dad was right after all.
After the 5 years of being apart from Dana, Kevin finally gets the letter that Dana has come back to get him. He was happy to find Dana on the Weylin's Farm and he tries to get away with her so they can leave the negative experiences behind them. When they try to get away, Rufus comes with a gun and tries to force Kevin into giving up Dana, so he could take her as a slave. Kevin didn't want to give up without a fight so he begins to become possessive of Dana. “Kevin stared at him. Until Rufus began to look uncomfortable instead of indignant.” (Kindred,185). Kevin changes from kind to possessive because he sees the way Rufus looks at Dana the same way he looks at Alice. Kevin understands that Rufus would do anything to keep Dana with him, so he must be possessive in order to keep Rufus in check. When Kevin comes back to the present, he does not come back the same. He has a Southern accent and he doesn't seem to remember how to use technology. He seems to be angry with himself because he struggles to get back into the present. When Dana tries to help him ease his way back into the present, he snaps and glares as at her which is something he had never done to Dana. “He stopped, glaring at me... The expression on his face was like... something I was used to seeing on Tom Weylin” (Kindred,194). In the five years, Kevin was in the antebellum south, he could have adopted the ways of the racist slave owners as he did the southern accent. Kevin is already showing their racist ways when he glares at Dana when she tries to help him, His action was like a white person to a black person in the Antebellum South. The experience negatively impacts Dana and Kevin because Kevin is not the same and kind man he was when Dana married him. Kevin comes back to the present as a stranger living with Dana because she doesn't
There are certain parenting values that are very important to the stability and effectiveness of a family. These important values include parents being able to communicate effectively with their children, being patient, and consistently disciplining the child. Communication between a parent and child should be a daily routine. Ask the child how he or she is doing in school, or how the child is feeling. In “Teenage Wasteland”, Daisy’s low confidence disables her to communicate with Donny. Daisy is so...
He was visiting his friend Wendell and Wendell’s mother began questioning him about his household. Wendell’s mother brought up to Kevin the fact that his father was married to two different women who lived right next door to each other. Not sure how to respond, Kevin shrugged her questions off. When he arrived home, he questioned his maternal grandmother about the oddity of their family dynamic. For better or worse, he was given the truth and Kevin explained to me he felt following that conversation “I think I grew up after that. The blinders were off and my relationship with my mother was never the same. I never trusted her after
In the show “Full House” the girls were raised with multiple father figures instead of the ordinary nuclear family. DJ has learned a lot growing up with three fathers and because of this type of parenting in the household, it can affect the girl’s development in the future. Both positive and negative ways, positively because she will learn independently and learn to cope with situations effectively because that’s how their father taught her. Negative because of just growing up with father figures in their home, they didn’t have that mom role model around which can affect their development in a way. Also, stated earlier in my research, single parents have more stress and that stress can be passed onto the child in the long-term. Research states that girls who are raised in a single parent home are three times as likely to become drug addicts, but the research was proven wrong. Recently the show ‘Full House’ renewed itself into a modern series, where the girls were shown as adults, grown up living their own lives. I noticed that DJ with her kids, she implemented the same parenting technique that her father had with her when she was a little girl. She is a little bit like Danny Tanner as a dad. She's very organized and orderly as a single mom due to her husband’s passing, so she has to be disciplined with three kids, just like her father was. DJ took a positive direction in her development because when she was growing up as a child her father was left taking on both roles with the death of his wife and DJ’s mother. As we see DJ grown up with her own kids, being a single mother she has to take on both roles. This left a positive impact on DJ to be the mother to her children as her father was to her and her
“With a sudden slash of his hand, he knocked both the sharpener and the cup of pencils from his desk”(Butler, 194). Kevin has recently returned to his home, nevertheless he seems to have acquired a temper, one similar Tom Weylin or Rufus. The one person he can talk about his experience is with Dana, which is a bit restrictive, but who’s to say that he will talk to her or instead he may treat her as a slave. In addition, after Kevin’s experience Dana is soon being sent back to save Rufus, yet Kevin makes no move to follow her. “He said something, but suddenly, there was too much noise for me to hear him-even if he had still been there”(Butler, 197). Dana wants Kevin to stay in California, instead of going to Maryland and possibly getting trapped. He has been through an experience no one should go through, but that is his wife’s life possibly on the line. Maybe Kevin does not love her anymore, as a result of being around people who hate black people. Kevin was surrounded by people for five years who treated other human beings so poorly, as a result, he possibly does not like Dana as a person. In
The film We Need to Talk about Kevin opens with vibrant images of what looks to be bright red jelly being thrown around in a festival on the street. There is a woman smiling, laughing, happy to be there and be free. This woman is Eva Khatchadourian, the mother of the film’s namesake, Kevin, and depicts a vastly different contrast to the rest of the film, as we follow the story of Kevin and his likely mental illness through the eyes of Eva. There may be brief light moments of happiness in the rest of the film, but never again like the happiness Eva experienced before Kevin’s birth, as raising him proves to be a challenge from day one.
It is very hard to relate to my step-son when his childhood and mine seem to be polar opposites. Growing up, I lived in the same house until I graduated from High School. In contrast, before he had turned five, he was used bouncing between four different family members’ homes. I understand that picking up the pieces and building a new family is not a simple task.
Successful parenting may be judged by many different standards. Raising a child to be a respectful, mature, and independent adult requires a great deal of effort. There are several parenting styles, and not all lead a child to reaching their full potential. Overpowering sternness leads may lead to a rebellious child, while passive parenting may lead children to inept for the challenges of adulthood. Parenting requires more than teaching children submissiveness, or building of self-importance. Children learn best from a role model who is admirable. Parenting is a great opportunity to set the course of one’s entire life in the right direction.

Parenting styles have the capacity of influencing a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological growth, which would then affect the child both in their childhood years, and as an adult.
