A person's characteristics define who they are, and these characteristics can shape their relationships and how others see them. In the novel Keeper N’ Me, Keeper and Garnet have very different characteristics, but they become quite close. Keeper is quite spiritual, intelligent and very close to nature, while Garnet is not very close to nature, he is a follower, someone who is lost and needs someone to lead him. Garnet is lost, and he needs someone to lead him, that leader is Keeper. Garnet is a follower, lost, and makes things harder for himself. (Garnet has followed others his whole life, he never really paves his own path.) “‘Cause I don’t know how to be Indian!’... So I started trying to fit into the white world as best I could.” (19). This is a quote from when Garnet was in a foster home, him admitting that he has doesn’t know his past. This quote proves that Garnet makes things harder on himself. Garnet started trying to be someone who he’s not at such a young age. He was putting on an act and faking it all his life, which gets to be extremely hard on a person. This quote also proves that how Garnet has been lost for almost all of his life. Garnet always had a part of him missing, ever since the Ontario Children's Aid Society took him from his family when he was just three years …show more content…
Keeper is a leader, someone who has the answers and directions if asked, he has so much knowledge, not technology wise, but in nature. “I’m talkin’ bout…are our traditions.” (54). This quote is Keeper talking about his beliefs and how important certain values are to him, it proves that Keeper is spiritual. “They took us...as a people.” (53). Keeper has gone through enough in his life that he has learned things, things that he can pass down to people, for them to learn the things he has, Keeper is knowledgeable. Keeper is someone who has answers and guidance, but he only gives it to someone he trusts, someone that will need that
For example Manus is a very down to earth and loving character. He cares for Sarah as if he was her father and talks to her gently and with love, empathy and consideration. "Yes...good...c'mon girl...you can do it....just try..." et cetera. But there are flaws with this relationship also; Manus views Sarah in a very fatherly light, although Sarah does not view Manus like that at all, she gives him flowers and cares for him in a very separate way.
Marcus Tullius Cicero, a famous Roman author, once said, “To each his own”. The quote simply means everyone is different in some type of way. A person can be charismatic, naive, or idiotic. Certain traits that a person owns can be defined by an independent archetype or, in many cases, multiple. The seeker, the sage, and the innocent, can particularly make up an individual that is loved by some, hated by many, enjoying life too much to live vicariously through people’s words and care about anything but himself.
What makes a person relate to a character? In the 1980’s authors began to utilize more imagery in their works to grasp audiences. With each character comes different languages and different viewpoints. When using imagery, the images the author wishes to convey come naturally. Louise Erdrich dug deep into her own ancestry which overtime inspired her short stories, poems, and novels (Louise). With background knowledge, she has been inspired to write about the relationships between Native and non-Native cultures. Erdrich was inspired by the family bonds and the ties of kinship, along with the inspiring storytellers she grew up with (Louise). All of these emotions are tied into her very first short story, “Love Medicine.” Lipsha, the protagonist
...cters and event influences, helping them to develop their character by the end of the story.
Jonas, the protagonist, is assigned the job of holding memories for the community. This is so that not everyone has to experience sad or painful memories. The Giver's job is to transmit these memories to Jonas and, in doing so, reveals the wonders of love, and family, and pain, and sorrow to this young boy. Jonas begins to resent the rules of sameness and wants to share these joys with his community. After receiving his first memory, Jonas says, "I wish we had those things, still." (p. 84)
In contrast we have the ‘Committee of Elders’ in The Giver, with the ‘Chief Elder’ at their top. They are a group of elderly people, which lead the Community: they make all the decisions , choose the Assignment for the people and can change rules . Another part of the leadership in The Giver in the ‘Receiver’. He is part of the Committee of Elders, however he is isolated from them because he bears the memories ot the Community. These should give him wisdom so that he can be questioned by the committee when new and difficult problems occur.
others’ perspectives of the relationship the story is centered around. The minor characters do not
Many times when reading a novel, the reader connects with one of the characters and begins to sympathize with them. This could be because the reader understands what the character is going through or because we get to see things from the character’s perspective and their emotions and that in return allows a bond to form for the reader. The character that is the most intriguing for me and the one I found comparing to every book that I read during school was Stacey from the book “Ravensong” Lee Maracle. The character Stacey goes through a lot of internal battle with herself and it’s on her path to discovery that she begins to understand herself and what she’s capable of. Throughout the novel, Stacey has a few issues she tries to work through.
Throughout the book I felt connected to one character, that character was George. George and I share similar qualities and our lifestyles can relate. One major characteristic I found in George is his ability to take the initiative in whatever he is doing, therefore showing his sense of leadership qualities. This caught my eye automatically since I am the type of person to stand up and demonstrate my leadership to others. I feel that my leadership quality is very important to who I am. It defines me as being me.
While reading these wonderfully written stories by James Joyce and Alice Munro I found myself relating to the characters a lot. They both wrote about two different characters, but the same meaning was behind both, growing up, changing from who they were to who they will be. Even though sometimes change is not always good, I think it is normal for changes to happen throughout people’s lives. Because being able to accept the change, watching the world change as you do, can make you become the person that you 're meant to be.
Characteristics are used to describe a person’s personality, quality, and features. These traits set every individual apart. In the short story “Trouble Is My Business” by Raymond Chandler the author reveals many distinctive traits about Marlowe. From him being able to take a lot of physical punishment, to using his fists well, and also handing out insults and wisecracks. With this, you may never know what Phillip is capable of at any given moment.
A personality is a combination of various attributes that belong to a single person. Each one has its own unique qualities and traits that create an individual that is different from any other human being. How this individuality is formed depends on the environment that a person has lived through and their experiences. Alison Bechdel grew up in a home with a father who alienated himself from his family so that he could conceal a dark secret from his life. Nevertheless, Bechdel was able to take from her past so that she could become a strong and independent women who kept true to who she was. Likewise, straying from the expected path of her family, Dorothy Allison was determined to become the person who she wanted to be. Expressing who she is and not changing to match others expectations has become high priority in Allison’s adult life. It was through a journey of hardship in their childhoods, both Allison and Bechdel were able to discover their individual identities in their adult life.
This is one of the beginning problems and examples of where the theme of what in life will get you to be considered a good or bad child is shown. During the climax or when Gabi’s father dies of an overdose on meth Gabi’s life turns all upside down and she sorts of goes through a depression and a hard time but eventually she recovers and starts to not be afraid and take the risk of doing things regardless of what people think or even if the world thought that if she did certain things like having sex she would be a bad girl. In the resolution of the book Gabi explains to her family and to herself that from now on she will do whatever she felt is right such as going to college and things she feels wont ruin her life. She also says that
Characterization of a human being has always two sides: the first one concerns one´s appearance, the other deals with one´s inner qualities. However, there is a slight difference in describing of a female and a male personality: outer characteristic is much more detailed when describing a female. But it is necessary to cover with both these issues when discussing the personality of a female.
Authors develop characters’ personalities in order to add depth to their story and allow readers to feel more connected to the characters. Beyond this, characterization also allows authors to develop the themes of their stories in a more clear manner. A prime example of this would be in the poem Judith, where the author contrasts Judith and Holofernes’ personalities in order to develop the major themes of heroism and having faith in God.
