I define a hard worker as someone who is willing to struggle and work hard, despite the fact that nobody will notice. Inside this essay, I will explain not only how I match this description, but also exactly how the Kealing Magnet Program is the optimal place for me to meet my goals, and how I will contribute to the community in ways outside of academics. Although my current school, Austin Home Base, has been great, I am ready for something new, and challenging.

I am an active member on my student council and am always working to make my school a better place. If I am accepted to the Kealing Magnet Program, I will strive. I can take my strong work ethic and put it to a good use. I wholeheartedly believe that the Kealing Magnet Program is the perfect place to lead me on a path to success. In my middle school years, I have contributed profoundly to my school.
In the 6th grade, I took part in an after school class, in which I not only increased our knowledge by going to museums and art galleries but also did everything we could to make our school of higher quality. I built bikes whose designated purpose was for the kids in our school to use, painted picnic tables for our school, and much more. If accepted to the Kealing Magnet Program, I can guarantee that I will assist in creating a greater environment. I love helping my community, and I will never pass up a chance to make it cleaner and more desirable.
The same year, I also participated in another after school class, based on the PALs program that many other schools take part in. Our original goal was to support and help younger kids with their homework, but soon after the program began, we expanded and began doing many other things. I helped in food banks, cleaned up our school, designed school T-shirts, and put together and hosted our school talent show. If you accept me to the Kealing Magnet Program, I will happily do whatever I can to help Kealing Middle School become an even better

I am very honored to have been part of this organization for the 2013-2014 school year and I plan to participate next year as well. At the end of the event I always feel so inspired and ready to make even more a difference in the lives of others, whether through volunteering, my future profession, or other organization at the University of Northern Iowa. I have learned so much from the Miracle Kiddos and their families, and plan to carry those life lessons with me as I pursue a career in the exercise/health science field.

With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. As a student, I am an active participant in my academic and extracurricular activities. My first priority has always been to make good grades and learn in school. Although this is important to me, I also know that by participating in clubs, sports, and after school activities, I will become a well-rounded student. I am grateful for the opportunity to have volunteered at the elementary school. It opened my eyes to a few of the problems in our communities. I was able to make others aware of those problems through volunteering and being proactive. I am going to continue with the program for as long as I am able to do so. If only we had millions of these programs across the globe, many other children would be able to benefit and develop the skills to succeed educationally.
Throughout my life, I have strived to be a hard-working individual when it comes to school, my job, and family work. I always try to work quickly and efficiently, and make my work the best that it can be. Perfectionism is a major part of my life and that is one of the driving forces behind my hard work. Sometimes the drive to be perfect can limit my results, but I try my hardest to keep it from restricting me. When I’m doing my homework I try to do is just how the professor did it in class, so I write down every step and then check the answer. By writing down every step, I have the luxury of seeing where I’m committing my mistakes and I can make it easier on myself by knowing what it is that I have to fix. I like being able to check my answers in the book to make sure that I am doing it correctly as well. When I am done with the homework, I like to go over every concept one more time to make sure I understand the process perfectly and to be certain that I can do any problems no matter what numbers or variables are presented. Hardworking: I consider hardworking to be one of my greatest strengths because I always strive to go above and beyond the expectations that I am held accountable for. In my personal life, I get a sense of accomplishment by attending college full-time while also having a part-time job. In my professional career, I always am striving to get all my daily tasks done and at least three more unexpected activities. I consider hardworking to also include balancing my family, friends, work, and leisure time on my days off.
As Boekaerts and Corno pointed out in 2005, although teachers set goals and expectations for homework, students must independently complete homework by practicing self-regulatory and responsibility. Behaviors such as planning, inhibiting distractions, persisting at difficult assignments, organizing the environment, overcoming unwanted emotions, and reflecting on what they have learned are developed in the process of complete an assigned homework. “Children who complete homework outside of school often develop an aptitude for academic work through extra practice and are responsible for regulating their own behavior, making homework a classic form of self-regulated learning” (197). Other researchers such as Zimmerman, Bonner, and Kovach acknowledge that these skills (responsibility and discipline) promote positive behaviors that, in addition to being important for academic pursuits, generalize to other life domains. “Because homework generally requires students to complete tasks with less supervision and under less severe time constraints than is the case in school, home study is said to promote greater self-direction and self-discipline attributes apply to the nonacademic spheres of life as well as the academic” (1). Furthermore, not only does homework instill positive attitudes that would last a life time, it also brings families closer together and strengthens team work amongst them. In Hoover Dempsey’s article titled The Motivational Benefits of Homework, “teachers can use homework to increase parents' appreciation of and involvement in schooling” (2).
It has become common these days to say that hard work and money go together, the more hard work you put in, the more money you make; however, if we step away from these false assumptions, we’ll be able to see that the relationship between hard work and passion is still alive. We have seen this relationship in the past in the form of inventions, and we still see it today in the determination of the passionate. The 7th grade class was awesome and totally exceeded my expectations. They were social, well behaved, participated, and were genuinely interested in what we had to say and interested in us and what we had planned for our own future. I have to say that this wasn’t what I was expecting at all. This was a great experience and I’m so happy that we had to participate in this program because I learned so much about the students and what they wanted to do in their future from where they want to attend high school, college, and what they want their future career to be and I hope they all come true for them. This program has opened so many opportunities for me. For example, I get to work with teachers at the local elementary schools and inside the classroom. I get to do volunteer work at the YMCA, nursing homes, and food pantries at local churches. These opportunities have impacted my life in numerous ways.
