In the novel, The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins perfectly used the minor characters, to help better our understanding of the main character, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss, shows many different character traits and personality throughout the book. From minor characters helping her find and stay true to herself, or showing how loyal and caring she is. Throughout the novel, Katniss was struggling between her true self and what she thought, the people of the capitol would like. She knew that her being likeable would get her sponsors, and which in the end, could save her live in the games. Cinna always made sure to tell Katniss to be herself, making sure she knew that the Capitol already loved her, and she didn’t need to change. “Remember, they already love you,” Cinna says “Just be yourself.” (Cinna p.123). Cinna helped Katniss maintain her true self throughout the book. …show more content…
She does her best to take care of people who can’t care for themselves. Rue was a being part in showing Katniss’s caring side. Rue was an underdog, that people would consider her as a bad ally. Katniss really did care for Rue, she reminded Katniss of her sister Prim. Katniss showed that she cared for Rue when she, cried and mourned her death, she covered her body with flowers at the time of her death. "Don't go." Rue tightens her grip on my hand. "Of course not. Staying right here," I say. I move in closer to her, pulling her head onto my lap. I gently brush the dark, thick hair back behind her ear. (Rue/Katniss p.234). Katniss knew that Rue loved to sing, so in her last moments, she sang to her. Katniss was really affected by Rue’s
This produced the mockingjay, and as Katniss states, they were ‘something of a slap in the face to the Capitol’ (The Hunger Games, pg. 43 ) All of the mockingjays’ appearances in the story have had great meaning or importance. They were first mentioned as a reminder of Katniss’s father; the days they would go hunting and he would sing to the mocking jays. This is an important part of Katniss’s past and has shaped who she is now.
An epic hero can be defined in many ways; however, most epic heroes and heroines possess a specific set of characteristics. These characteristics have several components and are often used to determine whether or not one qualifies as an epic hero. The popular novel, The Hunger Games, features a young girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen. Katniss faces a daily struggle to keep her family from starving and is forced to take the place of her sister in a selection to compete in the annual Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a televised fight to the death between children aged twelve to eighteen. The competitors are selected by random draw, one male and one female from each of the twelve districts. The last remaining survivor is crowned
When Katniss steps into the room, she finds that the attention of the Gamemakers is on a roasted pig that has just arrived. Knowing that unless she can impress the Gamemakers, she would have no chance of survival, Katniss becomes furious, and fires an arrow at the apple in the pig’s mouth in an act of defiance. Then she walks out, leaving the Gamemakers gaping. Eventually, she scored the highest rating. Therefore, this part of the film symbolises the “Road of Trials” for Katniss.
She often puts others happiness above that of her own, especially when it comes to those who are close to her. For instance, as her sister’s name is announced as tribute Katniss panics and gasps, “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!”(Collins, 2008) offering to take her sister’s place. Katniss would rather risk her own life in a situation where she is sure to fail, than have her sister Prim be endangered, displaying that she values her life more than her own. Later, as she visits with her family for the last time Prim suggests, “maybe you can win” but Katniss doubts herself, “I can’t win… The competition will be far beyond my abilities” (Collins, 2008). She truly believes that there is no chance of her surviving which shows how poorly she thinks of herself. Though she thinks little of herself, she thinks even less of her mentor Haymitch, even going as far as to call him “disgusting”. After having to endure him and his drunken antics on the train ride to the Capital, Katniss declares to herself, “I realize I detest Haymitch” (Collins, 2008). He is a drunk, who no one is overly thrilled to be around and unfortunately or maybe even fortunately, he is all she has to help her with the
... but there are some who love it like a girl on fire. They are the hope of Panem and the hope of our world as well. They are the ones who stand firm with Peeta, saying, “I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not.” They are the ones who share Katniss’s recognition that no one benefits from living in a world where evil rules. In some ways, her story is like that of the philosopher Socrates (469–399 BCE), who embodied a view of wisdom and virtue that defied the powerful overseers of cultural capital in his city of Athens. To his followers, he was a wise teacher; to the Athenian leadership, he was a heretic. Because those with economic, social, and cultural capital in Athens had the power to define what was socially acceptable, they charged Socrates with corrupting the youth and imposed a death sentence on the face of death.
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
A Study in Rouge The secrets, the darkest hidden truths, that lie in wait for the perfect moment to announce themselves never remain buried. The secrets of regret, of murder, and of desire play significant roles in Robert Louis Stevenson’s ominous novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde where the motif of wine represents the release of these mysteries. It is no secret to society that when one drinks wine then truths come out which is what Stevenson used in order to represent the revelation of secrets in his story. Scattered among the chapters of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the image of wine appears in situations where characters are withholding secrets from one another, and when an unforthcoming character is near.
...ued Rues life, she covered her Rue with wildflowers to show that their act of throwing children into an area to fight for their lives against each other will not change her as a person. Gales reasoning to be opposed to the Capitol helped Katniss persevere through contemporary struggle throughout the games and avenge the death of her fallen ally Rue. As a result, the role of the characters throughout the novel is an indicator of why Katniss is successful in the Hunger Games.
Rue and Katniss are allies, and when they are separated Katniss hears Rue screaming for so she runs screaming for her. Katniss finds Rue and helps her get out the trap she was in, but while she was doing that she gets a spear thrown at her causing her death. While she was dying Katniss comforts her with a song that causes the effect to be sadder due to the slow song. She then covers Rue with daises from a field after her death. When Katniss comforts Rue she was using feminine characteristics, which The Capitol wanted while she was not in the games. However, when she in the games they expected her to with a more masculine approach to everything; therefore, not showing emotions to events that would usually cause emotion. This appealed to pathos by showing the various emotions it caused. The Capitol was unfair to Katniss by wanting her to act in a different manner while she was in the games from when she was in The
Crookshanks, which is the name of Hermoine’s cat, seems to be better treated by its owner than Katniss’s cat. When it comes to emotion, Hermoine is definitely not reluctant to show them whether she cries, gets jealous, or feels hurt. Katniss usually believes in remaining tough and concealing her emotions from others. Hermoine is certainly not afraid to be girly at times, but does not let it interfere with her reputation as a powerful witch. Katniss is never interested in dressing up and seems to have difficulty in balancing both beauty and being strong. Watching Hermoine as an eleven year old girl grow up to be a beautiful and powerful woman may lead some readers to become more emotionally attached to her character than
Katniss lost her social interaction with many of citizens by just staying at her own distance, not leaving her bubble of safety. Katniss really did not have a problem with personal space, but she did not like being around others. She preferred the wilderness where she could do what she wanted to do, without having to deal with others. In that ...
Katniss is a good person at heart. Katniss may have hunter’s instinct; kill anything or anyone who tries to harm the people she cares about. Katniss would risk her life for them. Even in the games, Katniss would not kill the one person who stood in her way of winning. Katniss shows what matters compassion and her humanity. Katniss shows she is more than apiece in their games (232). Katniss remembers what Peeta said on the Roof. Peeta said,” I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not” (141). Katniss does not want to lose herself, which she never does. Katniss shows she is a good person by forming alliances and taking care of other tributes. Katniss does not think she is good but she really is even if she cannot see it.
While reading the novel, “The Hunger Games”, written by Suzanne Collins, one could see without difficulty that a running theme flows through the writing. This theme being perseverance, the one thing that had allowed Katniss Everdeen, the main character that a reader follows during the events presented in the narrative, to live on and be crowned victor with her teammate, Peeta, a young man who ventures into the Hunger Games with Katniss. The theme of perseverance appears frequently as it is tied to every trait and skill of Katniss which includes the idea that she is persistent, caring, and resourceful when it comes to surviving in severe conditions similar to the Games. Every thought she has and every action that she performs drives her to
Haymitch contributed immensely to Katniss’ survival in the games by getting her wealthy sponsors, to send and provide what she needed, like food or medicine, during the games. “You have good sponsors she says longingly” (201).” Without Haymitch’s hard work and effort to get Katniss good sponsors, the gifts would not have been as helpful, or even sent to her, and Katniss would not have made it to where she did in the games. Another example of Katniss depending on Haymitch was how Haymitch sent messages to Katniss in the games. Haymitch sent vague, almost coded, messages to Katniss, and Katniss used her prior knowledge of Haymitch to understand what he was trying to say. “Maybe he is sending me a message. Then I know, there is only one reason Haymitch is withholding water from me. Because he knows I’ve almost found it” (169).This means that, from her time being mentored by Haymitch, Katniss was able to understand why Haymitch gave her a canteen but no water. Katniss’ dependence on Haymitch worked well for her during the games because she was able to keep her mind thinking and alert, and was able to get resources that she needed. Without being able to think like Haymitch, Katniss would have failed at surviving during the games, because she wouldn’t have been able to understand the hints and find necessary
Katniss Everdeen is very determined. If she wants to do something, she tries until she achieves it. This is proved when Katniss wins the Hunger Games after she is told that she should try to win, by Prim, her sister and throughout the games she remembers these words and kind of uses them as her guide. She is also very strong in mental and physical ways. Her worst character trait is that she lets kind people root into her, so if someone pretends to be kind she will let them root in which means she lets them know about her and becomes easygoing with them. “A kind Peeta Mellark is far more dangerous to me than an unkind one. Kind people have a way of working their way inside me and rooting there,” (page 49). This proves that kind people have a way of rooting into her. Another important trait is that she is a survivor. She knows the way to get food to survive in any condition, like in the Hunger Games where she had to find food in the huge jungle while she was being hunted by other tributes. She also survived the Hunger Games using her skills and won, and in the process, saving a...
