Katniss Everdeen Heroic Qualities

A hero is defined as character who is admired for their determination, loyalty and noble aspirations and qualities. Suzanne Collins has written the dystopian novel The Hunger Games, which utilises a mammoth amount of heroic qualities, these being exhibited within the novel. Determination, commitment and the willingness to sacrifice her own life for another are the three main heroic qualities Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist plays a part in. These three heroic qualities have been displayed more than once throughout the novel. The Hunger Games is a novel based on many heroic qualities mostly targeted on the one and only Katniss Everdeen , and these are just a few.

Suzanne Collins does show many heroic qualities throughout the novel, one being her determination. She is willing and determined to take action when needed even when in her most difficult stages. This is clearly shown in the event of the reaping. The quote said by Katniss herself, “I volunteer!” I gasp. “I volunteer as tribute!” shows the love Katniss portrays. With the use of short sentences and repetition it clearly showcases her determination and certainty. She is willing to sacrifice her life for her Sister Primrose Everdeen and this definitely should be recognised by the audience. Collins demonstrated determination through Katniss Everdeen, which is a crucial attribute to being a successful hero. Therefore, determination is

evidently shown as one heroic quality exhibited by the protagonist Katniss Everdeen.

Another heroic quality displayed in the novel The Hunger Games by the protagonist Katniss is commitment.

A hero is expected to dominance commitment and she evidently shows and displays this. The quote said during Katniss’s scariest and unsafest time, “The bow. The arrows. I must get them.” shows the commitment and certainty Katniss plays a part in. The hesitation displayed in this quote makes the reader feel as if they were really there with the intense and powerful like use of language and punctuation. Thus meaning that Katniss does behold the heroic quality of

commitment.

The final quality shown in the novel is the willingness Katniss has to sacrifice her own life for another. This is shown through the quote, “You're not risking your life for me”, said by Peeta Mellark. Katniss evidently highlights that she is going to go to the cornucopia even if Peeta does not agree. She prefers to take action when needed for her former enemy at no cost. The second quote, What am i supposed to do?, Sit here and watch you die?.” further emphasizes the willingness Katniss portrays. With the use of her stubborn tone she further emphasizes the fact that she is going to get the medicine for Peeta whether he likes it or not. Overall, this shows that willingness is definitely a heroic trait that Collins has made Katniss have, and this trait should definitely be considered by the audience.

Overall, throughout the novel, Suzanne Collins demonstrates Katniss’ heroic qualities through obstacles she encountered. By always putting others before yourself, being positive and strong, the audience is clearly exposed to how determined, committed and willing Katniss was.
