Dear Mr. Dinsmore, I understand that you are a busy man, so I will get directly to the point. I am writing this letter to request for the removal of Katie Hopkins’ outrageous article, entitled: “Rescue boats? I'd use gunships to stop migrants.” Although I admire the masterful use of emotive language, figurative language and, description that make anyone who reads work feel repulsed, I feel strongly that her excessive use of offensive descriptions and the message implied in this article are not something that should be published. Incredibly, Katie Hopkins, in conjunction with numerous other offensive and indeed racist statements, actually implies that Syrian migrant are vermin. “These refugees are like cockroaches.” Just how offensive did she …show more content…
Furthermore, another article by Simon Usborne published in The Independent also mentions that the phrase can be compared to the view of the third Reich on the Polish, where they were seen as “an Eastern Europe species of cockroach.” I cannot believe that you would knowingly allow such dangerous, almost fascist ideas to be published in a newspaper such as your …show more content…
“Threaten them with violence until they bugger off, throwing cans of Castlemaine in an Aussie version of sharia stoning.” This passage is a perfect example of Katie Hopkins’ prowess. She is able to, in one complex sentence, deeply offend two entirely unrelated groups of people. Firstly, she describes Australians as dispassionate, thugs. She implies the border patrol lazes around while drinking beer on their ships and only become alert when approached. Only to effectively try to kill them with Castlemaine cans. Moreover, she culturally belittles Islam by making a joke of one of their sacred laws. Furthermore, she mentions in an extremely off-hand manner that Italians need to “stop singing opera, drinking espresso and looking chic in chuffing everything.” She implies Italians are also laggard, and prefer singing, than to protect their country from this “norovirus.” Not missing a beat, she states the Mare Nostrum rescue mission to find the migrant boats is encouraging migrants to risk their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea. As if the war in their country is not enough of an
The 2014 Walkley Award winning documentary, "Cronulla Riots: the day that shocked the nation" reveals to us a whole new side of Aussie culture. No more she’ll be right, no more fair go and sadly no more fair dinkum. The doco proved to all of us (or is it just me?) that the Australian identity isn’t really what we believe it to be. After viewing this documentary
I am writing to you in response to an article you recently published in Arena magazine - ‘Street Trash: Beggars of Britain’. It is poignant to know that humans, who have been made in the image of God, can have such a ghastly view; it is downgrading other human beings. This article is far too extreme and explicit!
Tan includes a direct quote from her mother in paragraph six of the reading, and she does not shorten it for an important reason. Tan decides to keep the entire quote instead of paraphrasing to add an effect that a reader can only understand with the full quote. It shows that even though some people speak the language of English it is hard for others to understand based on the person’s full understanding and comprehension of the language. In Tan’s case she is used to the way her mother speaks and uses the language, but to others it is almost impossible to understand. If it were not for Tan summarizing what the quote meant before putting it in the text, few readers would have understood what the mother was trying to convey with her use of the language. Tan’s strategy in including this direct quotation is to show that language differs from person to person even if they all speak the same language. She is implying that the whole world could speak English; however, it would not be the same type of English because of how everyone learns and how others around
For many reasons, the translation of the cat-and-mouse metaphor from America to Nazi Germany succeeds brilliantly. As Spiegelman’s research incontrovertibly bears out, in many instances Nazi propagandists represented Jews as mice or rats, claiming thereby that the Jewish presence in Europe was an infestation of vermin that needed to be wiped out. And there are various grotesque ironies that Spiegelman noted in the course of his research; for instance, Zyklon B, the poison used in the gas chambers, was first developed as a pesticide.
People of the court, we’re here today on behalf of our defendant, Mary Maloney. Our defendant is not guilty of first degree murder, which she has been charged with. After hearing Mary’s testimony it is obvious that Mary reacted under the influence of pregnancy hormones, past insanity, and extreme stressful anxiety.
As a part of my English communications study I have chosen to explore the various social and political issues regarding asylum seekers in Australia. Firstly I would like to clarify the term asylum seekers, or as they are more commonly referred to: ‘boat people’.
I just want this to end and us to all go back to farming and trading, instead of burning and protesting...” My mother is still against violence.“We must! We need to rid ourselves of this tax. We need to make sure Parliament and the King know that we will not lie down and be robbed!” My father and I were in total agreement. “I suppose... I just wish it wasn't so dangerous. What if someone accidentally dies in a fire? The soldiers might start arresting people and beating them up in the streets.” “They already do that. If anyone uses paper that isn't stamped, or criticizes the government, or speaks a single word they don't like, they get shut down and locked up. Prison conditions aren't exactly good... That's why I moved the table upstairs, so we won't be overheard.”
In the 1880s, a new generation of social workers, led by Jane Addams, argued that providing education and opportunity was more important than preaching morality. In 1889, Addams and a friend established Hull House in Chicago, where they lived and worked among the poor immigrants they aimed to help. Addams set up a kindergarten, a day nursery, and an employment bureau for the poor. On the other hand, Sumner is arguing (logically) that social classes will always exist, but that some men only need a little help to become a part of a higher class. He argues that “Instead of endeavoring to redistribute the acquisitions which have been made between the existing classes, our aim should be to increase, multiply, and extend the chances. The greater
Video games have become a hot topic recently. There have been a lot of controversy over whether to play or not to play. The controversy is due to them being arguably more captivating than all other forms of entertainment. Video games narrate an epic tale like no other form of entertainment can. You can become immersed in video games, because of this they are both a highly entertaining escape from the real world and a complete waste of time.
“If the protecting of our borders requires the incarceration of babies, the sexual abuse of children, the rape of women and the murder of men, then we are of all nations the most depraved.” This emotive statement from a man of the church, Father Rod Bower, touches a nerve with many of Australians. It is an acid test on our national consciousness. The shock of disturbed beliefs pushes us to reassess the foundation of our values.
Tammy Baldwin was born on February 11th, 1962 in Madison, Wisconsin and was voted as Wisconsin’s first female Congress member in 1998. Throughout her childhood Tammy lived with her grandparents and when she was diagnosed with an illness like spinal meningitis, and they had a hard time getting the health insurance to cover her hospital stay due to the inability to list her as a dependent on their policy. After Tammy got better, they continued to struggle to find a policy to cover her in the future due to her “pre-existing condition”, due to her experience in the healthcare system her interest in working in public service was sparked and lead her to a career in Congress. She has served seven terms in the House of Representatives including the
Modern society has become emotionally numb and drastically morbid. It is proven by the fact that negative headlines sell better than positive ones. The same can be said of the human tendency to accept negative information about someone more readily than positive information. The writer of the article “Lizzie Borden: Her School and Later Life – A Noble Woman, Though Retiring”, published in The Boston Herald, advocates for Lizzie Borden’s innocence, despite the human tendency to reject positive information about an individual. Lizzie Borden was being accused of murder and the writer sought to prove, through an extensive analysis of her appearance, that Lizzie could not be guilty. The author’s use of faulty logic, due to the lack of substantial
After the Civil War ended between the North and South there were many questions left to be answered. Likely one of the biggest questions looming over people was what would happen to the Southern states that had rebelled against the North? People had many different opinions on how reconstruction should go and how harshly the South should be punished, if even punished at all. Some people like William Grosvenor felt that consequences for the South should be severe (Dudley 7). Mr. Grosvenor was an abolitionist pre-Civil War and went on to be a commander of one of the original African American units of soldiers during the war (Dudley 7). Plenty of grudge holding Northerners had the same opinion as William Grosvenor, but some felt that the South
The death of John Wright, to some, might seem tragic and unacceptable, but for one person in particular, Minnie Wright, it was beautiful and freeing. When you are oppressed and treated poorly your entire life, and your husband takes away everything that you hold dear, then something has to give. Can justice has been served in an unusual way? With the help of Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, Minnie just might get away with serving up her slice of justice.
“I always feel like somebody's watching me and I have no privacy.” These are the famous lyrics from one of Michael Jackson's hit songs Somebody’s Watching Me. Now, back when this song was created, there was not as much worry about people constantly being watched by cameras, but it seems to fit in the problem that my generation is facing. In the book 1984, written by George Orwell, the society is always being watched through a device called a telescreen. The main character, Winston, has trouble adjusting to the life of always being monitored, and the fact that if you made one mistake you could be tortured or killed. This book was made in the late 1940’s and was written to show what the predicted future would be like. Many people who have read
