The author uses diction to create an uplifting patriotic tone in, “America the Beautiful.” Katharine Lee Bates word choice in the poem by using the words in a certain way. Bates begins each stanza with the same three words, “O beautiful for spacious skies.” Katherine also talks about how much she loves and supports her country. She was inspired by her country because of the beauty in it. She has faith in her country probably because she lives in it and it is a free country.
and that we should help those less fortunate than ourselves. In this I essay I have shown how successful the poet was in making me share this view by using his thoughtful and intense language, word-choice and imagery techniques.
Edgar Allan Poe's view on poetry is that all poems must be a "rhythmical creation of beauty". In his eyes, melancholy and sadness is beautful. He thinks that the death of a young beautiful woman is itself full of beauty. In both "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven", Poe writes about this so-called beauty.
to the powerful imagery she weaves throughout the first half of the poem. In addition, Olds
“She represents the type of womanhood America needs, strong, red-blooded, able to shoulder the responsibilities of homemaking and motherhood. It is in her type that the hope of the country rests” (Martin & Watson, 2004, p.3). This was Samuel Gompers sharing his thoughts about the very first “Miss America”, Margaret Gorman. The Miss America Pageant was established in the most fitting of all decades: the 1920s. During a time when women were just starting to experience newfound independence and rights, the Miss America Pageant strengthened the idea that women had more freedom to express themselves. The competition began as a simple tourist attraction, but the fact that the Miss America Pageant survived throughout the decades exemplifies that the competition was so much more.
Throughout each poem, both Taylor and Wheatley are constantly describing the nature they see around them. In Taylor’s work, there are multiple examples of him describing certain aspect of nature around him in a poetic fashion as he describes the rivers like green ribbon and the stars as twinkling Lanthorns in the sky. The same could be said for Wheatley throughout his poem. Wheatley is constantly describing the nature he has observed around him in almost every single line. He is seen describing to the reader about how the sun sets on the horizon above the ocean or how the morning will glow with somewhat of a rosy charm to them. By using descriptive power such as this, both Taylor and Wheatley are able to show their admiration for their Creator’s works in creating such a beautiful universe so that they may thrive
In the first stanza Wordsworth describes how he is wondering on his own and explains the freedom and loneliness he has, then there is a change in pace and suddenly he sees an array of daffodils which he imagines to...
The American woman is a mystery that has yet to be solved. She is an ever-changing poem that sparks interest in those who are unaccustomed to her mysterious ways. The American women fascinated many authors, including Henry James. To express his enthrallment, James employed his literary talent to create Daisy Miller. Daisy exudes the vast depth of the entity of the American woman, which originally captured James’ attention. John Hay, a contemporary observer of American manners and mores stated of the American woman, “Her conduct is without blemish, according to the rural American standard, and she knows no other” (qtd. in Fogel 52). James’s Daisy Miller depicts the innocence of the American woman, with its accompanying crudeness. It is through Daisy Miller, and her contradictory characteristics of purity and crudeness that James presents and depicts his American woman to the world.
Poe uses internal rhyme throughout the poem providing a whimsical air much like the euphoric feeling of young love that Poe and Virginia experienced (Mabbott). The internal rhymes allow for a spirited read of the poem and relates the narrators feels to the audience among the usually imagery as seen in the last stanza of the poem, “For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams/ of the beautiful Annabel Lee; and the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes/ of the beautiful Annabel Lee” (Poe). These lines also exemplify another craft element used over and over by Poe, repetition. The repeating of “the beautiful Annabel Lee” is an expression of Poe’s enchanted view of Virginia. He is repeating not only her beauty, but throughout the poem he refers to her as “my Annabel Lee”. He is showing possession of her, not in a bad way, but in a loving way that shows he held her very dear to his heart (Mabbott). Poe also uses assonance to give the same effect as given by the internal rhyming, the flow and euphoric feeling travels through the poem in its uniformity, especially in lines like, “to shut her up in a sepulcher” and “a wind blew out of a cloud by night”
Written on the banks of the Lye, this beautiful lyric has been said by critic Robert Chinchilla to “pose the question of friendship in a way more central, more profound, than any other poem of Wordsworth’s since ‘The Aeolian Harp’ of 1799” (245). Wordsworth is writing the poem to his sister Rebecca as a way of healing their former estrangement.
The beginning of the poem instills both the physical and mental awareness of the speaker, a person engrossed with the sensory imagery displaced before them. In the first few lines of the poem, the visual imagery suggests a feeling of calamity and serenity with phrases like “The sea is calm to-night.” “The tide is full, the moon lies fair” and “o...
In “Annabel Lee,” his most common refrains are “Annabel Lee,” and “In this kingdom by the sea.” He claims that the refrain must be brief because if it were long it would not have the same effect on the reader. Choosing the word or words for refrain do have meaning, they are not just a word or phrase that is repeated every so often. Poe expresses, “The sound of the refrain being thus determined, it became necessary to select a word embodying this sound, and at the same time in the fullest possible keeping with that melancholy which I had pre-determined as the tone of the poem” (“The Philosophy of Composition”741). This means that the word must still reflect the tone you are portraying throughout. “Annabel Lee,” uses “In a kingdom by the sea.” This phrase sounds just like, “once upon a time,” in my opinion. It serves what he may be trying to get across. This love he and Annabel Lee share is so rare and beautiful it is one just like we hear about in fairy tales. This refrain may have been purposely chosen for that reason. When he repeats, “Annabel Lee,” or “my beautiful Annabel Lee,” he puts emphasis on her name and that she was his and still
The speaker 's state of mind still remains that of a child 's; however, he has now had to endure the death of his beloved and he has become akin to a child who has had his favorite toy taken away. The world has now lost all of the beauty it once had when Annabel Lee was still with him. The rest of the world has become pale in comparison, “The moon never beams, without bringing me dreams of the beautiful Annabel Lee;” the moon is now just a circle in the sky; it is a pale substitution of the light that Annabel once brought into his life. The shiny, bright, “Stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes of the beautiful Annabel Lee;” have only become a simple part of the night sky now that they are no longer able to sparkle and be reflected in Annabel 's eyes. Annabel has been taken away from him and he refuses to see the world around him, instead focusing on the sole fact that she is no longer there. The speaker no longer seems to find any beauty in the world, his idolization of Annabel has caused him to focus on only her and not of himself or any other object. He continues to cling to Annabel and the life that he wished they could have had together instead of moving on and finding something else to devote his time to. He “[lies] down by the side of [his] darling” as the poem draws to a close, never moving on with his life or growing
The structure of this poem is a Ballard, with its repeating words such as “In this kingdom by the sea or Annabel Lee” (2, 4). Poe seems to bring together different tones in this poem from a fairytale beginning to a dark and gloomy ending. This poem is set up with a rhyme scheme of abad and its pattern is
The first piece, entitled Composed upon Westminster Bridge by William Wordsworth, takes the form of a sonnet, which poets have used throughout the ages to display their dexterity and skill, which Wordsworth uses as a vehicle to convey to the reader his sense of love and celebration for the city of London. As Wordsworth was a Lakeland poet, traces of his original subject matter can be found in the piece such as in the line ‘Open unto the fields, and to the sky’ which is followed by on the proceeding alternate line,
The explication was an opinion thought and also details about this poem. I found out that poems have a lot of meanings once you annotate it and break it down. “Annabel Lee” was an interesting poem that had brought out my attention. Although poems are not one of my biggest things to read or do, I enjoyed “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe.
