Kareem Abdul Jabbar Analysis

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar used his writing skills and his own personal thoughts to make good argument that appeals to people's emotions and beliefs. In his article Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: When Politicians Commit Hate Crimes, he talks about how politicians make racist comments and people are taking it as if it is ok for them to say it since the politicians are. Kareem is arguing how we are the ones that need to speak out for what is right. Due to his section about the wrongfully accused Muslim boy, and his analysis of the racist politicians, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was successful in achieving his purpose of appealing to the emotion of the reader and providing them with information. Politicians publicly being racist, and it is causing the races and religions being accused to be targeted more. The wrongfully accused Muslim boy is a emotional way to get his readers to agree with his argument. The closing paragraph with the reference to one of his favorite movies was a great way to make people think, even after they finished reading his article.

Kareem talks about how Donald Trump is calling all Mexican immigrants “drug dealers and rapists.” He also points out how Ann Coulter tweeted out anti-Semitism in an outrage.

She insulted “the amount of jews that were in the United States” (Abdul Jabbar) , with people actually agreeing with her. Kareem gave many examples of how the candidates in the united states are making it so “Mexican immigrant children, Jewish children, Muslim children, and daughters everywhere will walk among their peers a little more ashamed, more frightened, and more in danger because of their hate speech” (Abdul-Jabbar). This piece was very effective in his argument. He used current information that is becoming a real problem, and added in some more information to make something that people are more likely to agree

with.
Using the story of how the “14 year old Muslim boy got wrongfully arrested for his religion” (Abdul-Jabbar), was a great way to use people's emotions to better Kareem’s argument. The article talked about how he was arrested at the school and marched out in handcuffs (Abdul-Jabbar). This makes people wonder how they might feel if this happened to their child, just because what they look like or what they believe in. People are more likely to follow the ideas that are being given if they are able to relate to them. The boy might have been in a bad situation at school, but it sparked controversy on how we can change as a community, and Kareem helped his argument by adding it in.
He ends the argument with a reference to one of his favorite movies. He talks about how one of the characters in the movie just chooses to sit there and listen to someone say a anti-Semitic joke. His message is that the people of America need to speak up, or nothing will be done to stop “the atmosphere of fear, hatred, and exclusion” (Abdul Jabbar). This was a great way to finish the piece. It will get people to think more about his argument even after they finish reading it.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made his argument more successful by using people's emotions towards the wrongfully accused Muslim boy, and showing how the racist politicians could end up indirectly hurting people's children. He is making people aware of what is happening, and letting people know that there is something that they can do about it. If someone knew that something was being done that could possibly make a child feel bad about who they were, I know that they would stand up and do what they could to make sure that it does not happen.
