My Slut me not campaign, were my slogan is to not slut shame because I am beautiful. Is a movement of empowerment were rape survivors, victims of slut shaming can come together and make a voice out to the world to end slut shaming? We come together and we talk about ideas and go on marches around the country and hopefully the world to make awareness of the this issue. issues include the ideas behind beauty ideals; to the way we dress; to ending gender inequality; and to take back derogatory terms like slut, hoe, b*****, and many more words. We are a campaign of empowerment. When you hear the name, Kim Kardashian, what are some things that come to mind? Most people would say her body is sexy others would say that her body is abnormal.
Others also say the only reason why she is famous is by the people she sleep with. So what do most call young women who have control over their sexuality and sleep with many men as they want. Some say she is empowered and it is her body and she can sleep with whomever she wants. Others would say that she is a slut or hoe. But wait, if it is okay for men to sleep with as many women as they want and get applauded for it; why can’t women. We call that a double standard. There is a new word for ridiculing women for their sexual actions; slut shaming. According to the article Exploring Perceptions of Slut Shaming on Facebook:Evidence in reverse double standards slut shaming is “ This discrimination is sustained through ‘‘slut-shaming,’’ which is the act of attacking a woman’s character based upon her perceived or real sexual activity (Papp, 2015).” This discrimination is really prominent during the years of college when we are free to explore the world ourselves. This is a relatively new concept we are now facing. The campaign that I am organizing Slut me not is campaign to erase diminish the double standards and for young women to feel comfortable with their sexuality.
We have to truly take initiative in order to express our ideas regarding our feminist movement. We must take all our concerns in order to foster personal liberation and growth. The archaic social, psychological, and economic practices that discriminate against women must be ordeals of the past. We must compose new practices in order to develop a post-revolutionary society. This movement will require strategy, organization, commitment, and devotion; it may be a long battle, but I believe that we will end in triumph.
Without meeting these three intertwined characteristics, the social movement in question cannot be successful. The Occupy Wall Street movement for example, as mentioned previously, is lacking leadership and organization and its common purpose was very wide, as it focused on social and economic inequality worldwide. It would have probably succeeded if the movement had broken down the claims they made in small movements. Contrastingly, feminist movements embody perfectly this idea, as they each fought for one cause, from the legal right to file complaints independently to contraception. By taking the problem of gender inequality as a basis, they succeeded in taking issues like voting, contraception or matrimonial rights, in the prospect of making changes in society. So today, we can affirm that the feminist movement is succeeding, as it still criticizes current issues. Also, as seen before, sustaining contentious adds the success determinant of other new issues emerge from them, as it brings new political opportunities, by the dissolution of constraints in society. In the end, the key to success of social movements is adaptation to the context, and the flexibility of the movements’
Sex is everywhere is America. In 2010 Kim Kardashian modeled in a commercial for the fast-food chain Hardees. The commercial features Ms. Kardashian on a bed seductively eating a salad while in a silk robe. At the end of the commercial Ms. Kardashian eats the salad in the bathtub because she dropped some dressing on herself while eating in bed. Kim Kardashian is one of the sex symbol of the 21st century, and the Hardees commercial used her status to sell their salad. Kim Kardashian 's Hardees commercial is not unique in it 's philosophy of using sex to sell a product seeing as almost every company, excluding children’s products, uses sex to sell their product. Being a sexually active person is seen as extremely important in main-stream American
3. Empowerment of women and girls is an effective way to address global poverty, especially since the majority of the world’s poorest people are women. Basically, empowerment is a fancy word for earning equality and respect and making sure everyone is equal. This global poverty is only happening because of the lack
Firstly, this paper will evaluate how the more radical tenants of liberal feminism, specifically the ones that promote open celebrations of female embodiment and sexuality as a form of political representation through activities like The Slut Walk, can work to exclude women of color. Indeed, a woman whose political, social, and economic subjectivity/Otherness has historically and socially been formulated through a discourse of hyper-sexualization may not believe that re-appropriating a term like slut or whore is actually an effective tool for political representation and change. This is because the woman of the Other has historically been the whore within a virgin/whore dichotomy produced by colonial western political orders, in a way a white woman is not. Consequently, activities like a slut walk, may only generate the very ideologues of sexuality that have been constitutive of racialization and systemic
When exploring deeply constructed ideologies and movements one must rely on the words and the events of the past. Feminist philosophy or moreover feminism is a movement that has always existed in a number of forms. Any feminine or masculine figure who clearly denounces separatism among the sexes, whether they claim or not, is a feminist. What is feminism and why is it a massive and powerful concept? It is a movement, movements are meant to shape and create a new way of thinking and a new way of life. There are always those who support, fight against, or simply do not understand what feminism is. The argument at hand is why is it called feminism if it stands for the equality of sexes socially, politically, and economically? Could this be categorized
In the majority of undeveloped countries, women are still married off to whoever a higher authority chooses, must stay in the home to clean, and do not have the same amount of legal rights such as voting. It is true that until there is more of an economic development within these least developed countries, women’s rights will expand naturally. In the United States, a developed country, women still do not get the same amount of pay or social standard as men do. For instance, the United States just elected a president that sees women more so as objects than human beings. Therefore, people are going to watch this man and be influenced by the words of disrespect to women and believe it is fair to treat women this way. In society, women are shamed for trying to express themselves. The shaming leads to men being violent with women which can take a turn into rape. Nine out of 10 victims of rape in the United States are women. In conclusion, women have successfully improved their rights as individuals, but have not conquered their rights. In order to conquer their rights and be completely equal, people all around the world that are advocates for women’s rights need to stand up. People must do everything in their power to stand up against their governments. Men and women can do so by being involved with organizations that promote women’s suffrage and create a huge impact on children, men, and
Awareness springs activism. When one properly learns of a situation that must be alleviated they can now act to reduce the problem. Courses and organizations on women’s and gender issues are most helpful in spreading awareness throughout the land. As more people become educated on the subject, there is a good chance that a percentage of those people will take action.
Thinking about the first question – what leads me to teach feminism – the answer stems from my belief that alliances matter in the struggle for progressive social change, and that allies must be enlisted to support the aims of ending sex and gender discrimination. The histories of justice-seeking movements in the United States can help to illustrate why alliance building is necessary as a follow up to and a complement to the concentrated efforts of a dedicated base of activists, such as suffragists in the 19th century, young black students involved in sit-ins in the early 1960s, or protestors against the second Gulf War in our time. Social movements often follow a trajectory that begins with radical activists confronting oppression with direct action, even when a cause appears unpopular. If the efforts of an activist base are successful in calling attention to unjust social practices, a sizable minority or even a majority of the wider population may decide that they have a stake in the movement’s success, making possible such historic legislative achie...
Women have been fighting for equal rights ever since our country was created. Now I know that what men are fighting for is a different situation, but there is a common ground, Samantha Olson says in Medical Daily, “Feminism only speaks of one lopsided perspective in the gender inequality story. There is a common misconception that men are a gender exempt from the burdening expectations, stereotypes, and social pressures. Free from glass ceilings and slut shaming, but boys are faced with a totally different hate”. Women are fighting for a different reason, but I feel that we should piggyback off their
To conclude, liberated women and the women's liberation movement are two separate, but related, concepts. The concerns of liberated women are more individualized than those of the women's lib movement. Liberated women are more concerned with their own personal identities and independence, whether it's their sexual freedom or freedom from their bras. The women's liberation movement, however, is more about women's collective interests and the actions that can be taken to remove the sexual oppression that denigrates all women.
So this is, perhaps, what the women’s movement emerges from. There is clearly a need to bring ...
Victims often find that they have to deal with a lot of harassment even after being shamed. For example, some men will come onto girls who have a reputation of being ‘sluts’ because they think the girls are going to be ‘easy’ and ‘into it”; thus, slut shaming can ruin how people, especially men, perceive and treat a women. Slut shaming can also increase rape culture by discrediting a women’s allegation of rape due to her sexual history. In so many cases where rape is reported, officers and lawyers attack the victims by questioning how they were dressed prior to being rape, how they acted, were they being ‘promiscuous’, or were they flirting with their rapist; if any of the above questions were answered “yes” they would claim the victim was “asking for it”. In the Steubenville rape case, a 16 year old girl was recorded being raped by two football players at a party. The footage was later sent to other classmates and quickly spread throughout the whole school; as a result of the “stigma surrounding sexual assault, she [the victim] was labeled as a slut and viciously tormented by her classmates,” (Nelson, 3). In cases like these, girls are slut-shamed for being victims of sexual
Feminism can be a theory, a social movement, or a political action that has been demonstrated in many different ways in history. There have been many different key factors that played a role in forming feminism. There are certain leaders or spokespersons’ of feminism, as well as a general sense for organizing change amongst women’s equality that helped to develop what we know, or conceive feminism to be. Feminism has been successfully communicated using several types of strategies, and advocates have framed their goals for feminism using those strategic advantages in their favor to help their cause or movement.
Personally, I think that female empowerment means to motivate and encourage women to be who they are and to make the changes that they want to see in the world. We read in “Presence” by Amy Cuddy that in order to make change, women need to find their “best authentic selves.” This means being comfortable with who one is and being confident in one’s ability to make change. In the book “Vital Voices”, we read many examples of how women across the globe stepped up to make advances in the feminist movement. Each one of those women knew who they were and where they wanted to go. Many were raw with their emotions and experiences and used that to connect with their audience or inspire others to join a cause. This demonstrates that in order to empower others, an effective leader needs to capture the idea of authenticity. One can share their experience about having a personal drive to do something or share how they fearlessly utilized their skills to create a change, but most importantly, an effective leader can empower others by being the one that believes in someone else’s
