Although many people give Kanye West a bad reputation, a line during his speech during the 47th Grammy’s has had a profound effect on my life. His quote that I refer to when dealing with a difficult situation is, “If you have the opportunity to play this game of life, you need to appreciate every moment. A lot of people don’t appreciate the moment until it’s passed.” I have had many difficult situations in my life, between my Father passing away and fish year in the Corps of Cadets. Just finding a way to push through was hard, and trying to stay positive seemed almost impossible. To make it through, and to become happier, I kept these words in mind. The hardest decision that I have had to make was choosing to attend Texas A&M. After my father passed away, I had grown closer than ever before to my family. Coming here meant that I would have to leave them. I was worried that the relationships that I had worked so hard to develop would weaken, and that I wouldn’t be able to help them if something came up. However, my decision was final, and I would be attending A&M in the fall. Rather than being negative, I thought back to what Kanye had said. I needed to appreciate every moment, regardless of what may come. From that point on, I made the most of every moment that I spent with my family. Whether it was …show more content…
family dinners or just talking while driving to school, I made sure to appreciate every interaction. Being grateful for any opportunity I had to spend with my family, made what could have been of the most negative years of my life, into something that I will look back on happily for years to come. In addition to giving me a positive attitude, the quote allowed me to improve myself in difficult situations.
At the end of Freshman year, I applied to be a Corps Clerk, and was accepted into the interview process, but I did not get the position. I was inclined to attribute it to my incompetence, but I instead used it as an opportunity to understand what improvements I needed to make. What I found was that I needed to work on my speaking skills. I used this to my advantage, as I was able to perform well during my Student Engineers’ Council Interview and be accepted. Referring to this quote, and using every experience as an opportunity, allowed me to better
myself. This quote reminds me that every minute we spend “playing this game of life” is a privilege. If I had spent my time on how unfair life had been for me, I would have more regrets than positive memories. By keeping this quote in mind, and really appreciating everything that I am given, I have noticed that I have been truly happier. I cherish every opportunity and every relationship, because I know that I might not be guaranteed another.
Football season blew by and I was so upset that I won’t ever play again, But now that I am where I am at right now I really just can’t wait to get out of here. Annoyed and ready to want to leave all the high school drama that there is. I am excited to start my adult life in college to become a physical therapist assistant, working home care and living in Florida. But for right now im stuck here in Findlay, Ohio where my parents just told me they are getting a divorce. Through All the hardships in my life this one is definitely the hardest on me and my whole family. I remembered a quote from a book called the Glass Castle that I really took to heart and I use that as motivation to keep my mindset on my goals and not let the bad things distract me from what I want in life. The quote that has changed this mindset was
“Kanye Ran onto the stage saying, ‘I'm sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!’” (Top 10 Outrageous Kanye West Moments), says Kanye West at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards after Taylor Swift had just won “Best Female Video.” People that are like this have typically not always been this way. They were probably raised as a polite and respectful person before they were exposed to fame and fortune, and other “celebrities,” making them feel like they are the only people on the planet. Causing them to do things like that. Although, Kanye West is an amazing musician based on his 14 Grammy Awards and multiple albums going “Double-Platinum” (Manheim, James M., and Carol Brennan). He fell victim to fame and fortune, and turned into an arrogant and overconfident person making him more popular and praised among media. But looked down upon by everyday people. Kanye Omari West, born on June 8th, 1977, is a world famous rapper who, like all other celebrities, started out like a nice person who made nice music for nice families to listen to. West was a confident and competitive person even as a child, “He was determined even then to get out of his crib and be free, even if he split his head in the process—and he did. He has fought ever since to do exactly what he wanted to do—no matter what,” says Donda West, his mother in her book, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar. By the time West was ten, he was already creating his own raps, and according to the people around him, he was pretty good at it even at that young of an age. (Manheim, James M., and Carol Brennan) West was not too interested in school as he grew up, but he was able to get by because of his talent. If he dropped out of one ...
“Coastal Carolina is too far away for you to come home when you have the chance.” Kaylee (my Girlfriend at the time) said to me in my first car as we talked about college choices. I told her about my acceptance to Coastal Carolina University I received from Mrs. Emmons (personal guidance counselor in high school) during a school day, early February. Kaylee’s words made me start a to question myself; “What other colleges can I choose?”. I came home and sat down with my parents in the living room with my Coastal Carolina acceptance letter in my hand and they were proud of me. I asked my parents the same question I asked myself earlier that day “What other colleges can I choose from?”. When
Fabian Terrazas VT1701237 English 1, Part 2Assignment 1.7 Poetry Assessment How does communication change us? 1. Does communication change us? Write a paragraph in which you answer this question and provide at least 3 reasons to support your opinion. (20 points) In my opinion communication does change us in a way like for example backthen we did not have smart phones like we do nowadays. Back then they would have to send letters with messengers and it will take the message awhile for it to get there. Now we can carry a phone in our pocket. We can send messages in seconds across the world and make phone calls as well. Communication changed the whole world.2. Provide an example of each poetic device from any of the assigned poems. For each quote, explain the author’s intended meaning. What is the author really
Like Skeeter, I too am moving away to a bigger city to pursue an education. Although it was hard for her to leave her family, especially her mother, she knew it was the best thing to do for herself. In the past few years, I have learned what I need to do to benefit myself while not forgetting those that I love. As sad as it was for Skeeter to leave Mississippi, she knew that she was going to make a difference in the biggest city in the United States. Although it is on a bigger scale than me, I can still be related to Skeeter. When Skeeter was in high school, the only thing her mother wanted from her was for her to find the man of her dreams. Although she listened to her, she wasn’t as confident in herself as her mother was. It wasn’t until she was pushing herself through her book and realizing who she was that she finally got engaged to a man she admired dearly. I feel as if I relate to Skeeter finding her confidence in this way. I have definitely gained confidence through the past few years and hope to keep improving it as I move into college. I can’t say that I have reached every goal I have, but I can say that I am improving. Altogether, I have learned what it means to be
Billy Collins, the speaker of Introduction to Poetry, attempts teach the readers by guiding on how to appropriate and analyze poetry. Collins use of personification and imagery, gives the readers a different perspective to interpret and find the significance in poetry. In this particular poem, the speaker does not want the reader to, “tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it,” (Collins 13-14) but the reader should relate to their own personal experiences to the poem and what the author is conveying. Collins believes poetry should be studied in the right way else they lose their beauty.
When coming to the first class of Form in Poetry, I admit I was a bit nervous, for I knew very little about poets, poetry, and poems, but I also was very ignorant because I did not believe there was a lot within a poem. Oh how naive I was. The further we pushed through the year I was enlightened with new types of ways to format a poem, different meters and beats, to an array of vocabulary words that I could not begin to define. I learned that not only if poetry and abstract art form, but it is a very particular and intellectual form of art that has the ability to morph into an infinite number of possibilities. With the genius poems of A.E. Stallings and Stanley Kunitz, I was able to expand my horizons away from
I never once in my life sat down with myself and really thought about what my parents had to go through and all the sacrifices they had to make in order to ensure that I have a better life and a brighter future. Thinking back now, the frustration I feel eats away at me constantly that I was not more thankful and did not do more to help. This is most definitely a lesson that is learned better late than never. Going forward now I have three main focuses for when I enter college, the first is undoubtedly God and my spiritual life, which forced me to have this revelation. The second focus has to be my family, which I appreciate and value more than ever now.
I never read any poem before I took English 101B. I bought “Literature The Human Experience” for course requirement this semester, so I read a lot of poems from this book. Actually English is my second language, I just have moved to The United States of America three years ago. I had so many problems to read article such as novel and fiction, but I can easily understand the poem. I think the key is that the most of poets just use very simple words to show us the deeper meanings. The forms of poem are also diverse. I tried to compare them to Chinese poetry, and I found there are so many similar places. Poets from East and West both put a lot of emotions into the poetry. Then they can use the poetry to chant history, praise love and criticize humanity. These all can be showed by the simple words. It is the magic of poetry!
and maintaining specific goals involves work and often builds character in the process. Thus, it is imperative that we recognize our weaknesses especially when it comes to communication. Furthermore, by improving upon reducing my anxiety, learning from my writing mistakes, and gaining a better grip on verbal and nonverbal communication, I have become a better speaker. In addition, I will never forget the impact this class had on me because the lessons I learned will be the very reason for my success in the
This journey taught me so much that I wouldn’t have ever imagined. I grew from this experience mentally and I saw my parents becoming closer and regaining that bond they held with one another. This event taught me to be more appreciative with all the little things I have and made me realize that life isn’t going to go the way you want it to; you have to fight for the path to lead you in the right direction. I was brought closer to both my parents and my brothers. This event started new beginnings for this family, a new start to get things right because when I found out I would be moving to San Diego, I never would have realized the struggles I went through; especially when I was a silent voice in the decision.
I had to mature quickly and learn how to take care of someone else besides myself. I am now a mother to four children. They have taught me how to have patience. This has become something I value very much. I have learned that in life you must wait for things. I now know that there was a reason why I had my son so early and wasn’t able to go to college upon graduating high school. I am so thankful that I had patience and waited for the right time to enter. It has been 14 years since I graduated high school, and I’m attending college and know exactly what I want to become. I had patience and took care of my babies at home before I decided to go to school. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m so glad I
I have been writing poetry since the 3rd grade. At age eight, I didn’t know about couplets, haikus, and limericks, I just knew that something had to rhyme. I wrote anything that popped up in my little head and formed it into a nice poem. To me, it was a nice little poem, but I wasn’t sure what others thought. I never once let anyone else read my poetry. I told myself that, “my poetry, is my poetry,” and that was final.
Nathan also commented that I was really good at articulating the responses to the questions. Therefore I was amazed by the comments I received from the interviewer and the observers. I felt like I could have been even better if I overcame my
When my senior year came, and it was time to begin the process of sending in my applications for college, and I was not ready. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my life at that point. My mother would pressure me everyday to start looking into colleges (In-state and out), and applying to the ones I liked. My parents had told me of some pretty places they had traveled through in Connecticut, Arizona, Washington, and Colorado. Taking their word for it, I applied to a few. In December, I had finally made a decision. I wanted to go to school in California. San Diego State had become my school of choice. It had a beautiful campus, it wasn’t too big of a school, and it was very close to where my Father wanted to retire. I soon found out that I was too late. San Diego, and most California schools, had their application deadline back in November. So I had to start looking in a different direction.
