Social media and public figures have helped younger generations get interested and involved in politics. To admire a public figure, is to allow yourself to be influenced by what that person buys, says, and even does. Extensive coverage of Kanye West, has led to an undeniable cultural impact. Long before his controversial video “Famous,” Kanye was already known for his disorganized grandiose rants, controversial stunts, and his comparison to god. Kanye, a self-proclaimed democrat, made vague intentions about running for president in 2020. A year ago, before Donald Trump’s nomination for the presidency, I wouldn’t have thought this possible, but today, I would rather have Kanye running than Trump. I say this because Kanye West has reinforced
Growing older, and becoming more aware of the way the masses swayed, it became clear that Kanye West wasn't very liked, and therefore must be a bad person. I was overall very passive about this topic. I had other things I was more interested in, like figuring out how to survive high school, but I gathered information regardless. Without trying, I learned things about Kanye, mostly negative, and mostly through the mainstream media. It became increasingly clearer to me that there were two completely opposite views about Kanye, the more popular view: he’s a worthless egotistical pop star, who’s created nothing of value, and, as I was shocked to learn over time, the informed view, and the truth, that he was and is one the most influential artists of the 21’st century.
Kanye Omari West, rapper, producer, professional celebrity, and with an ego to match, has forced himself into the limelight of the music industry. Kanye West has made a lasting impression on all of those around him, whether it be a good one or bad. With seven full length albums, a multimillion record label company, and a successful fashion business all under his belt, it’s fair to say that Kanye has done his fair share of creating. Over the last twelve years Kanye went from a young Chicago kid just trying to get his flows off, to one of the most decorated musicians of all time. With over 20 Grammy’s and 3 of his albums ending up on the Rolling stones “500 greatest albums of all time”. He has continuously created, entertained, and spoken his mind for years. Whether it be “George Bush does not care about black people” or “Taylor imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had
The authors both making sweeping statements about the political nature of the United States, but Ames addresses a more concentrated demographic of American society than Hedges. The latter points the finger at the venal egotism of celebrity culture for entrancing the public into complacency, and at America’s political leaders for orchestrating the fact, but he also places substantial blame on the people at-large for allowing themselves to be captivated by the entertainment industry. Ames discusses an issue in which the Millennial generation stands as the focal point, but she speaks directly to the teachers of these adolescents due to their position of influence. Although today’s youth are proven to possess a spark of political energy through their own volition—displayed through their generation-wide interest in dystopian literature—an environment of learning and in-depth analysis provides the best opportunity for the novels’ underlying calls-to-action to strike a chord with their young
On May 5, 2018, Atlanta rapper Childish Gambino released a video for his new song titled “This is America.” The video featured not-so-subtle commentary on the current gun debate in the United States and began trending quickly. Many began to wonder if a song with this much political weight could make it past the viral stage and hold its own on the music charts. One of those inquiring was Chris Molanphy, a journalist for Slate.com who often writes about popular music. He makes the claim that this song is “one of the most lyrically daring [Billboard] Hot 100 No. 1 in history.” In his article, “‘This is America,’ the Video, Is a Smash. Will the Song Have Legs?,” Molanphy uses diction, ethos, and analogy to argue that Gambino’s “This is America”
Throughout America’s history there have been countless influential leaders that have proudly been American. Those have held positions of politicians, soldiers, and . Kanye Omari West has opened the eyes of today's generation and still continues to shape American history. His musical influence has transformed the lives of countless people. Inspiring many to stand up and fight for what they believe in is something Kanye West continues to do even today.. Also, opening the eyes of many to racial injustice towards African American citizens. I’ll further elaborate my claim in the following paragraphs using historical evidence.
“Kanye Ran onto the stage saying, ‘I'm sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!’” (Top 10 Outrageous Kanye West Moments), says Kanye West at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards after Taylor Swift had just won “Best Female Video.” People that are like this have typically not always been this way. They were probably raised as a polite and respectful person before they were exposed to fame and fortune, and other “celebrities,” making them feel like they are the only people on the planet. Causing them to do things like that. Although, Kanye West is an amazing musician based on his 14 Grammy Awards and multiple albums going “Double-Platinum” (Manheim, James M., and Carol Brennan). He fell victim to fame and fortune, and turned into an arrogant and overconfident person making him more popular and praised among media. But looked down upon by everyday people. Kanye Omari West, born on June 8th, 1977, is a world famous rapper who, like all other celebrities, started out like a nice person who made nice music for nice families to listen to. West was a confident and competitive person even as a child, “He was determined even then to get out of his crib and be free, even if he split his head in the process—and he did. He has fought ever since to do exactly what he wanted to do—no matter what,” says Donda West, his mother in her book, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar. By the time West was ten, he was already creating his own raps, and according to the people around him, he was pretty good at it even at that young of an age. (Manheim, James M., and Carol Brennan) West was not too interested in school as he grew up, but he was able to get by because of his talent. If he dropped out of one ...
Kanye Omari West, an icon of hip-hop, pop culture, fashion and music in general. Kanye Omari West, a person belittled against and a person subjected to a life of racism and hate. Born on June 8th, 1977, Donda West, West’s mother, always knew he was destined for greatness, but did she know her son would turn out to be the Kanye West, a man lacking the respect he deserves for transforming a big part of the music we listen to on this very day? West came onto the scene in the late nineties but didn’t release The College Dropout until 2004, an album that took everybody by surprise. Kanye West changed the gangster filled rap genre by releasing his positive, soulful debut album, changing the way rappers dress, and paving the way for a whole new style of introspective lyrics and soul-inspired rap production in the mainstream.
Donald Trump can be appreciated for his cunning business savvy and an ability to at various times throughout his career, make it big. By co-creating this reality show with Mark Burnett, not only has he capitalized on the public's desire to fantasize about (and for a precious few, compete for) achieving a high-profile, financially lucrative career as a business mogul, he has also brought to the mainstream audience a heated, emotional and stimulating debate about something that we all seem to have an opinion on: what it takes to be a great leader.
...e an effect on our politics, its very important for a candidate running for president to have a popular celebrity endorse them as president, just like Oprah did for Obama in the 2008 election. Giving celebrities huge amounts of power over everything in our society. But what does Justin Biber know about the economy, or what does Oprah know about running a country? Thats the thing, they don’t know, and because people blindly vote on a presdient only because most the celebrities like him, is causing our political figures to care less about the everyday citizen, and work harder to please the celebrity that helped him get elected.
Examining Trump’s rhetoric and past actions, it becomes clear that Trump’s ability to be the leader of America, especially in today’s already heated world climate, becomes questionable. When even the members of his own party refuse to endorse him and claim that he is not qualified to run a country, the general public needs to sit back and question his integrity. In Trump’s past, he has proven to be an insensitive, racist, greedy business man. Why would he prove to be any different once elected to office?
“David Robinson, who performed a statistical analysis of the President-elect's Twitter account in August, said Mr. Trump's tendency to tweet like an "entertainer" meant he was able to garner the “interest" of the American people, which in turn boosted his chances of election success”(Independent.co.uk 1). His appeal to emotion has personally benefited himself to the point where he remained a key subject of interest throughout the entire election. Whether or not he was favored, he was the most focused on topic for the widespread media.
The movie A Face In the Crowd depicts the rise and fall of the character Lonesome Rhodes. Which we see play out on the very thing that gave him power and identity, the television and radio. Lonesome started out in a corner of a jail and rose to the top of the world, what we call today the rags to riches story. From his time in the jail to his first day on the radio you could tell he had the potential to be a star due to his charisma, charm, talent, voice and ability to relate to the people. When he received his first start on the KGHK radio station of Marcia uncle. He captured your attention by his appeal to things women were going through at this time; his funny stories and feel good songs. As he becomes increasing popular through television and advertising he realized how much power and influence he has over people. In return, he uses this to his advantage and gains the keys into the poltical world. We also see this same situation unfolding in recent presidents, which J. Jeffrey Auer discusses. He says “we should be troubled today by the degree to which actors and acting have influenced contemporary political speaking” (Auer 93) example, Ronald Reagan. If presidents like Ronald had the charisma, the voice and ability to relate to the people similar to Rhodes he controlled his own destiny. Lonesome was able to conquer the hearts and minds of many Americans through all forms of mass media radio, television and advertisement which also benefited the political rim as well.
One of the coolest people on the planet is Justin Bieber. Why? Simple: his catchy, fun music speaks to kids and teens, his presence on social media allows his fans to interact with him, and he clearly loves what he does. It’s not hard to see why teens and tweens have “Bieber Fever.”
Popular culture embodies the beliefs, ideas, perspectives, attitudes, and images of various cultures. Popular culture is heavily influenced by mass media, key celebrity figures, movies and related entertainment, as well as sports and news. However, in the past decade, the Internet and social media has come to be a significant influence on pop culture.
There is no secret that a modern day teenager’s life is built around the usage of technology. As a result of society’s heavy reliance on technology, social media has become popular amongst people who are “technologically advanced.” Though there is a wide variety of social sites that can be accessed through modern day technology, a few have become very popular. Social sites which have become widely popular among teens include Instagram, Tumblr, and Snapchat. These social networking sites provide instant social connection and emotional support while letting teens post and send pictures of their everyday life. Many teens look towards social media for emotional support and social acceptance. The continual usage of these sites are negatively impacting the self- esteem of teenagers worldwide since they heavily rely on social medias to portray images of what they believe is acceptable for the society we live in.
