There are a lot of features that make comedy stand out in different instances. An over exaggerated joke can be the factor that makes something funny. The fact that something is not true can make it funny. In fact, there are elements like sarcasm, irony and Kairos that make comedy so effective. Kairos is one of the most important and key factors in comedy. The definition of Kairos is a time when conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action. The origin of the word Kairos came from the Greek. They had two words for time the other being Kronos which dealt with quantitative and chronological time while Kairos dealt with qualitative and more permanent in nature. Kairos and Kronos also have found themselves in the Bible. Kairos …show more content…
In relation to comedy, when the joke or comedic scene has the proper timing, it has a lasting effect on the audiences receiving the information. In addition, having quality time with other people usually is associated with laughter and humor. Quality time is usually in correlation of lack of time. When people are having a good time with one another, complaints are usually that the time together was not enough, and they would have wished for more time with said individuals. This goes to show the tension between Kairos and Kronos. Kairos is shown to be more powerful in this instance. The Kronos is a limiting factor because when people are enjoying the company of one another, the time allotted for them runs out and people are usually left disappointed because their chronological time with one another has run out. Kairos is the overpowering factor because what needed to be accomplished, having a good time, was done at the right time to create good …show more content…
They are able to use their own judgement as to when the timing is appropriate. As an audience, trying to make fun of those situations would not work because it is not necessarily known to the audience what it felt like to go through that certain situation and then have the ability to make comedy out of that situation. The way the information is delivered and the time it is given changes the way the humor is received. Shows like The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and The Onion are ways for all of us to relate to things that are happening to us currently in a comedic fashion. These shows are all examples of fake news casting outlets. Timing is critical in relation to these shows because if the hosts and producers of the shows miss a current event, the point they are trying to get across would no longer be funny. The more relevant the topic, the more on point the timing must be. The Daily Show recently a show on an apology Mark Zuckerberg released concerning a data firm who accessed the Facebook accounts of over fifty million Americans without their knowledge (CNN.com). CNN reported this happened on March 21st, 2018 and The Daily Show has a clip on the Comedy Central website which has the date March 22nd, 2018 posted along side of the video clip. They had worked on making this writing as relevant as possible. The pull between Kairos and Kronos is present once again. The Kronos is important because
According to Aristotle, “Comedy can be any colloquy or performance generally intended to amuse or stimulate laughter”. In modern times, comedy can be found in different forms, such as television, movies, theatres and stand-up comedy.
Comedian Jon Stewart gives a speech on the Daily Show during the “Rally to Restore Sanity/Fear”. He wants the viewers of the Daily Show to realize the difference between the real and fake threats and to take a humorous perspective on most of America’s “problems”. Stewart also emphasizes to his audience not to take every person on the media by his word and not to overreact to everything they hear. He uses metaphors, comparisons, and hypothetical examples to get his point across.
“Fake” news programs, such as The Daily Show, Zinser reasonably argues, have the potential to dilute mass media and deceive viewers. The Daily Show has been straightforward about its lack of legitimacy as a hard hitting news program, but “the show’s content and guest list suggest otherwise” (Zinser 367). Zinser indicates that The Daily Show should hold itself to higher standards because “people might well think they’re being fully or sufficiently informed while watching” (367). In other words, Zinser believes that if viewers tune in with the expectation of becoming informed and The Daily Show’s content consists of significant topics, the creators ...

Psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists study humor because it is a fundamental culture value, but they still can’t determine why certain things make some people laugh and others not. There are “humor quotient” tests that are designed to measure an individual’s sense of humor, but these tests are questionable. These tests aren’t accurate because almost all humor depends on cultural background knowledge and language skills. Not every person in the whole world, or even in one country share the same background knowledge and skills, therefore they cannot have the same type of humor. “The fact remains that individuals vary in their appreciation of humor” (Rappoport 9). Since humor varies from individual to individual, humor lies in the individual. How successful or funny a joke is depends on how the person receives the joke, humor cannot be measured by a statistical
According to Everything’s an Argument by Andrea A. Lunsford and John J. Ruszkiewicz, “Humor has always played an important role in argument…” (38). Humor itself is something that activates amusement or laughter. Moreover, in popular culture satire is a tool that is used to point out things in our society. Satire opens the minds of people to philosophies they might completely deny, using humor. There are many elements of satire that identify flaws within our society. A couple of satire elements that will be discussed are irony and exaggeration. In addition, a parody is used in popular culture as a way to mock or mimic situation or person.
Many politically based talk shows focus on controversial topics. Their shows aim to cause discussion over many politically controversial topics. The shows cause people from both sides of politics to argue over topics that usually both sides strongly believe in their opinion. The shows begin to turn into a screaming fest, where one side, of the argument, tries to talk over the other side, while the other does the same thing. It shows that without humor or something else being there to lighten the mood a small debate can turn into a fully heated argument. This shows the power of context and diction. Through the use of a humorful tone, when used in the right time and place, people are able to calmly talk about topics that without it would be a full on argument. Through a comedian’s humorful word choice, he is able to make his points usually without completely enraging his audience. Those who don’t use humor or something else to lighten the mood, end up creating an argument that just grows and grows until both sides are screaming at and denying everything the other side says. However, eventually something is said that lightens the mood. This is usually something somewhat comical that both sides can relate to. Whatever it was that was said becomes the thing that both sides can agrees on, and as a result makes the argument
Comedy differs in the mood it approaches and addresses life. It presents situations which deal with common ground of man’s social experience rather than limits of his behaviour – it is not life in the tragic mode, lived at the difficult and perilous limits of the human condition.
Comedy is by far the most influential factor in deciding whether or not a story is
Television network Comedy Central, obviously known for their comedy programs, has a show called the Daily Show which doubles as a news broadcasting program of sorts. The broadcast is hosted by a South African comedian and actor named Trevor Noah. During the episode of the Daily Show following the democratic debate in Las Vegas, Noah and his news team did a post debate analysis where they presented a few of the main topics of the debate as well as their own remarks on each of the five individual candidates. While the Daily Show focused primarily on the satirical commentary of the top news headlines, the content and presentation can be analyzed through Nosich’s Standards of Reasoning to determine if the comedy show could be considered a reliable news source.
Language or the way in which words are used is one of the most important components of a comedy. Through an intelligent use of word play and the ability to add
From the beginning days of the printing press to the always evolving internet of present day, the media has greatly evolved and changed over the years. No one can possibly overstate the influential power of the new media of television on the rest of the industry. Television continues to influence the media, which recently an era of comedic television shows that specialize in providing “fake news” has captivated. The groundbreaking The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and its spin-off The Colbert Report have successfully attracted the youth demographic and have become the new era’s leading political news source. By parodying news companies and satirizing the government, “fake news” has affected the media, the government, and its audience in such a way that Bill Moyers has claimed “you simply can’t understand American politics in the new millennium without The Daily Show,” that started it all (PBS).
Television comedies have been on the air for decades, and throughout this time many different shows have come and gone. Due to the dominance of these shows, comedies are one of the biggest draws on television. There are many different types of comedies, each with their own unique characteristics and features that differentiate them from others and lead to their popularity. Whether the show is a sketch comedy, sitcom, mockumentary or dramatic comedy, each utilizes different types of humour, locations, themes, and situations to appeal to the audience; which is likely why they are so popular today.
If there is one way to bring a smile to someone’s face, it is laughter. Funny jokes, comical stunts, sarcasm- Every person is different when it comes to what makes them laugh. Some find dry humor comical. Others think sarcasm or joke-filled ranting are the best. ‘Comedy’ is such a broad term, broad enough to allow everyone to find something they find comical. In fact, ‘comedy’ includes a specific type of drama, one where the protagonist is joyful and happy endings are expected. Comedy is like a drug; it allows you to escape reality. When we say the word ‘comedy’ in the present, we are generally referring to a type of performance which provides humor.
