"Are we the United States of America or the Democratic/Republican States of America. Or maybe the Black/White States of America. And even the Christian/Muslim States of America. We are not the United States until a man can walk out his front door, say hi to his gay neighbor, converse about the weather with his black friend, ride a commuter train sitting next to a Muslim, go to work for a female boss that gets paid the same as her male predecessors, then come home to a wife that he respects. That's the United States of America. There is still an American dream, and it's for a world where everyone is respected. Times have changed and we must push forward. We need younger people in our government. We need the minds of the people that understand children and understand what day-to-day life is for the average American. We need minds of people that understand our modern technology and are able to utilize it to make our country …show more content…
Juvenoia is impossible to avoid, at some point in your life, you will question the ideals of the younger generation. One big form of Juvenoia is the inability to accept the music of the new generation. Many members of the Gen X generation hate rap and hip-hop because it's not good, it's a bad influence, and it's not what you're used to. No one stops to think why we listen to that music, and if you do, you will find no answer. The reason we listen to music is because it makes us feel things. Our generation is interested in partying and staying young forever. The catchy beat and easy to memorize lyrics of rap and hip-hop capture that emotion and allow us to let it out. Another reason why people listen to music is because they can relate. With job availability being low and an increased number of "hoods" as they would be put in today's modern terminology, rap and hip-hop describe the environment of depressed areas and give insight to what it's
Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. There are so many different aspects of the agriculture industry that many people never think twice about. Most people are not interested in agriculture because they think it is just about farming or
Through the course of change in the world- either through prosperity, capitalism or greed- people have lost focus with the real meaning of 'the American dream'. It is no longer the gamely aspirations of living life to the fullest, providing a better life for yourself and or others; instead, a pursuit for those materialistic aspects in life.
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
With that being said, the American Dream exists, but because of the same reasons, the American Dream is now harder than ever to achieve. Division causes people to point fingers, to judge, and put obstacles in the way so people after them won’t thrive. It is harder to achieve the famous American Dream based on equality, freedom, love and peace if those are the last things seen today. It is key for this generation to truly come together and find solutions while making the American Dream reachable to all
Some say the American dream is completely dead in today’s society. No. The American dream is alive and well for those who will go the extra mile for it. People may believe it is dead due to factors that may “hinder” a person from achieving it. These factors include, but are not limited to, discrimination, lack of job opportunities, debt, natural disasters, etc. These theories may be proven wrong in most cases, with the exception of some. The American dream is the idea that anyone, no matter the situation they are currently in, can eventually live a happy and stable life in America. The dream is attainable for a willing individual, who will work hard for what they want. This does not mean it will be easy, nor does it mean
“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both” (Roosevelt). The goal of America’s legal system as we know it is that everyone is given an equal opportunity to stick up for what they may or may not have done, as described by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Also this is what officials strive for, it is not always the case. Facts can be skewed, distorted, or misrepresented to make one side seem to be guilty without a doubt and to make the other side seem as if they have done nothing wrong. The Crucible by Arthur Miller begins and ends with one-sided accusations of witchcraft. It all results from a group of girls who had been dancing in the woods. After two fall sick, the accusations begin. The girls who were dancing, especially Abigail Williams begin blaming others to look less guilty themselves. Accusations are flying left and right so that soon, hundreds are in jail and over a dozen are executed. Abby’s main goal is to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, so she can be with John Proctor, a man she previously had an affair with. However, John is not interested in Abby and his
Further, the American dream entails the upward societal mobility that can be achieved through hard work. James Adams in 1931 defined the American dream by saying that life should be richer, better and fuller for all individuals, with a fair opportunity for everyone according to their ability and achievement regardless of circumstances of birth or social class. The American dream idea is deeply rooted in the declaration of independence which proclaims that all of us are created equal and that we are endowed by our creator with inalienable rights such as life, liberty and most importantly the pursuit of happiness(Vatanpour 1991). Modern Meaning of The Dream. Is The Dream Still Alive?
“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature”. From the beginning of time man and nature has been in conflict with one another because, as a whole, there is no cooperating. Each one tirelessly wants its way. The Man is fighting for dominance and nature w never yielding its authority. In American Literature, many authors illustrate this theme in their writing. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
The American dream is a slowly fading dream that seems to be escaping all the lower classes of American society. The American dream still exists if we examine correctly. The dilemma with American dream is that it has become so much harder to fulfill. Social inequality along with a lack of social mobility have negated the ability to accomplish this. As time has passed, the gap between the rich and poor has become larger and larger. Hence social equality has grown overtime. This would not be as consequential of a problem for the American dream if social mobility had stayed the same. Social mobility has decreased with time as well. Social mobility is the ability to move from one social class to another. Sociologically speaking, the American Dream
"I think the American Dream says that anything can happen if you work hard enough at it and are persistent, and have some ability. The sky is the limit to what you can build, and what can happen to you and your family" expressed Sanford I. Weill. The American Dream is still alive and obtainable. Many people have a definition of what the American Dream that is obtainable in their minds. People all have unique individual lives.
The American dream was conceived in the Declaration of Independence. It became part of Americas character. It gave the American people certain unalienable rights that included life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The American dream is the ethos of the United States, It set the ideals for America; however, times have changed since the constitution was written, and people 's view of the American dream have also changed. I would agree that the American dream is more difficult to see in action these days, although not impossible to achieve. The economy 's recession is one of the large factors, American 's have just been trying to survive to feed their families. These are tough and weary times
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
The American Dream is the ideal that every U.S citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative (The Current). There was a time where the American dream was in reach of being attained by everybody in the country. Even foreigners had a chance in this great melting pot to go from rag to riches. The economy was wonderful and everything about America was absolutely amazing. The in today’s world is that with gather to little and we want to take too much. Around the world there are all different cultures with the same economic systems just simplified and sometimes different. In America today we had one economic system. Everyone was on the same level, but
The “American Dream” has changed for the better. So now that we, as Americans, have established our principles, we can build our goals and create a pursuit for a middle-class economy and a better future. Every object on this earth came for somewhere and it took time to generate into what wee know it as now. Same goes for the goals of the “American Dream” and how it came to be what it is.
Patricia now has achieved her definition of the American dream. She now has Medicare, and is able to vote for herself, while be retired and safe owning a small business. “I live where I want to live, my children and family are safe, and my kids are free,”(Patricia Huff). Do you believe the American Dream has meaning currently? I think the youth don't get it. People have become lazy mentally and physically because of the technology. No one does anything by themselves anymore. People need to pay attention and be aware or local and global issues. The most important thing is “we need to be one nation under God,” people have forgotten this today.
