In March of 2017, I had the honor and privilege of being able to observe in on some court proceedings down at the Santa Clara County Juvenile Courthouse. With over thirty-two years of trial experience, Judge Frank Bondonno was able to give a little insight on the juvenile justice system. One question I was interested in hearing about was his view on the cause of juvenile crime. Unlike an adult, a juveniles mind is still developing and needs a strong family structure in order to prevent juvenile delinquency. A family is the foundation of human society, and when that system breaks down the juvenile is going to seek that attention anywhere they can get it. Long story short, during my junior year in high school, I was caught with my pocketknife on school ground and was processed through the juvenile court system. When I was sitting in the same seat as those juveniles during the court observation, I had the support of both my parents there with me. Being a first time offender I was able to complete my sentence through the deferred entry of judgment (“DEJ”) program.
The next question I asked Judge Bondonno was how do you help rehabilitate juveniles that are already in the system? Bondonno told me that his goal is not to punish juveniles, but to assist juveniles in finding the help they need. The last thing Judge Bondonno wants to see is a repeat offender, he wants to see juveniles grow up and succeed in life. I did a little more research on how the juvenile justice system is being more effective each day. The fist strategy was through legislative education and advocacy. What that means is working with lawmakers to making sure they understand the system and have influence on the decisions that they make.
