In the movie freedom writer, author Erin Gruwell explains how some teachers’ effect on their students’ behavior, education and whole career. Ms. Gruwell as a teacher of unmannered, rude and mean students. Changes her students whole life by a positive attitude. In this movie the best moral was attitude can make a lot differences. Ms. Gruwell students become changed because she made school environment like a home where everyone was free to express their comments and concerns. She worked really hard to make their life better and provide them better education. Does concentrating on her students’ life effect on her personal life? Helping and getting involve with students education help students but effect on her personal life, she got divorced …show more content…
Ms. Gruwell is an example of a tragic heroin, because a tragic heroin is a character with noble heroic qualities, who obligates an action and make a mistake that cause his/her downfall. The common theme that discuss in this essay is Tolerance. Ms. Gruwell work with her students with a lot of tolerance even they were really rude with her in beginning but her attitude change them. When we heard the word tolerance what comes in our mind first, is something that deals with respect, or deference. “Schools have given an increasing amount of attention to issues surrounding diversity and tolerance. Character education courses, multicultural material, and even health curricula weave the theme of tolerance through their lessons” (Burhrer). According to author Burher, from article Teaching Tolerance explains how tolerance is now a big issue in today’s school system. Whether we learning any …show more content…
And they are interacting with small groups, one on one, adults as well as children of other ages. Such inter-personal and small-group interaction is ideally suited to the growth of responsibility. No wonder, then, that homeschoolers appear more willing to accept others doing their own thing, even if not the norm” (Jacob). Here author is defining how home schooling and public school students has difference. Does it means we should encourage our kids to stay in home and get education by homeschooling? No, it is not the solution for it, we need to sit down and work with our kids’ behavior. Because now days tolerance in school really matters and kids get highly effect by this. Or if kids have teachers who supports her kids like Ms. Gruwell did that would be awesome for them but if there is no one like Ms. Gruwell kids will be ruined. I believe now high school teachers doesn’t really care about their kids behaviors, they give assignments and expect it to done by due date. If students misbehave in class or lose their temper teacher calls principle to deals with it and handle it. They don’t bother their selves to know what kid problems is. Because I believe students misbehave and lose their temper when they have something going with their lives as in Freedom Writer all kids were related to gangs. They didn’t have an adult who could teach them about manners, and behavior. Nobody
How will this growing problem be fixed, not only in the United States but the world as well? One important action is to continue the effort to improve schools worldwide. Schools in poorer areas of districts would benefit from a greater number of better trained teachers and faculty. Other actions to help improve schools would be to add more leadership and extracurricular activities, encourage students to focus and stay in school, and making things such as school lunch and recess better. It is important to have students enjoy being at school and enjoy learning, otherwise they'll lose intere...
Erin Gruwell began her teaching career at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California where the school is integrated but it’s not working. Mrs. Gruwell is teaching a class fill with at-risk teenagers that are not interested in learning. But she makes not give up, instead she inspires her students to take an interest in their education and planning for their future as she assigned materials that can relate to their lives. This film has observed many social issues and connected to one of the sociological perspective, conflict theory. Freedom Writers have been constructed in a way that it promotes an idea of how the community where the student lives, represented as a racially acceptable society. The film upholds strong stereotypes of
Director Richard LaGravenese has successfully narrated a story about a teacher who is trying to change racism. Freedom Writers shows that a caring teacher and shared experiences can change stereotypes, inequality, and intolerance. First of all, in Freedom Writers, the high school student stereotypes’ issue is very serious. The only white kid in Mrs. Gruwell’s classroom has been isolated. The reason why this happened is because all the other kids think whites are arrogant.
In a place of extreme torment, this teacher is capable of bringing a light of faith in her students and from her determination she is able to show that is worthwhile to make a difference. Now days education is only about standardized testing and teaching a curriculum, rather than becoming a role model to students and change their perspectives of life. Therefore this movie teaches the enormous value and impact that a teacher can have in someone 's life and encourages teachers to exceed the limits and make education meaningful for students. In addition, the film inspires to pursuit a better future. It demonstrates that there is always hope to achieve big dreams and overcome the impossibilities. Finally, freedom writers teaches the humanitarian lesson of helping those who suffered, and being the change that they need to see. It is about becoming a hero everyday in the simplest moments of
One might ask why some parents decide to home school their children rather than send them to public school to receive a traditional public education. In his article, “What Have We Learned About Homeschooling,” Eric Isenberg offers data which says, “Families choose to homeschool their children for both academic and religious reasons” (407). Even so, most people claim that public school offers the perfect environment for learning and developing. They argue
The film Freedom Writers directed by Richard La Gravenese is an American film based on the story of a dedicated and idealistic teacher named Erin Gruwell, who inspires and teaches her class of belligerent students that there is hope for a life outside gang violence and death. Through unconventional teaching methods and devotion, Erin eventually teaches her pupils to appreciate and desire a proper education. The film itself inquiries into several concepts regarding significant and polemical matters, such as: acceptance, racial conflict, bravery, trust and respect. Perhaps one of the more concentrated concepts of the film, which is not listed above, is the importance and worth of education. This notion is distinctly displayed through the characters of Erin, Erin’s pupils, opposing teachers, Scott and numerous other characters in the film. It is also shown and developed through the usage of specific dialogue, environment, symbolism, and other film techniques.
Other times when a parent decides that they want to homeschool their child, its most likely for personal beliefs. Some feel they are protecting their child from being exposed to the dangers of sex, drugs, and alcohol. They don’t take into consideration for what the child needs or wants. If a child does not want to be homeschooled, it can affect their education as well as cause stress, anxiety, and depression. In an article written by Michael H. Romanowski, he puts the type of families who choose homeschooling in two distinct categories: ideologues and pedagogues. He states “ideologues argument is essentially religiously based” (Romanowski, 2001); whereas, pedagogues feel that public schools teach without skill, intellect, and creativity. In order for a child to grow and develop to his or her full potential they need positive socialization. It is easy to argue that going to public school can demonstrate both negative and positive socialization, but in order for a child to learn and grow, they must learn how to handle negative situations in life. By not doing so, it will deprive a child from learning humility and how to handle adverse situations. Romanowski stated “critics charge that home schooled children are isolated from the outside world and are socially handicapped. By being sheltered from the real world, children are seldom presented with the opportunities to learn sorely needed social interaction skills.” (Romanowski, 2001). I believe Romanowski demonstrated the impact of isolation homeschooled children inquires. Children who are homeschooled live their life “in a bubble”. They have no opportunity to experience life in multi-cultural classrooms. They are restricted to their family experiences and atmosphere most of the time, which are limited to their own biased lifestyle. According to the Civic Perils of Homeschooling Rob Reich states “total customization
Is hard to obey and pay attention to a person that is not part of your close circle. Teachers always struggle with the students because the teacher has to catch the attention of all the students in its classroom. The movie Freedom Writers show the development and skills that made the teacher, successful. First of all, the teacher is challenged when started with freshman students with a bad background and at the age where the students have too much rebellion. The teacher starts to show and perform some abilities in the class. Then the teacher success her purpose to make the students feel an interest in their education. The main character in the movie struggles in her class, but then finds a way of making
...n people have nothing. If people had more compassion for others the United States would not have all the problems that it does today. Mrs. Erin Gruwell had compassion for the students; when they saw how much she cared they changed their perspectives on life. Against all odds toward against Mrs. Erin Gruwell, she had the power of human will to teach the student. The writer introduced several scenarios on how young innocent children were influenced by family and friends of the same racial background to create hatred and gang’s violence against other races. Five messages in Freedom Writer are: Non judgmental, Racism, having compassion, the power of the human will, and education. Being non judgmental, having compassion and having human will helped Mrs. Erin Gruwell educate the children at Woodrow Wilson Classical High School. Segregated by race, united with education.
As the population in public schools increase, the problems in these schools are also on the rise. These changes are leasing to the way parents are schooling their children. Many parents are leaning towards homeschooling as a solution to this problem. This increase in homeschooling can be directly related to an increase in school violence, the offering of a lack luster curriculum, and lack of student teacher interaction.
Lip&Feinberg(2008) There are many reasons why parents are choosing homeschooling to their children; they may be concern about the school environment since
ABSTRACT: Homeschooling is a controversial topic among educators. The issues that follow a child throughout their educational and social lives, are elevated when a child has been home schooled. There is no social environment for the child to learn to develop basic social skills; most home schooling environments are made up of a child, perhaps accompanied by a sibling, and the parent teaching the information given. There is no room for a developed personality that is consistent with a child of equal age and grade in a normal schooling environment.
I have chosen to write this essay about homeschooling. Homeschooling is one option for schooling children, along with public and private schools. Many people do not believe in homeschooling because they do not trust that parents are teaching their children correctly. They argue that parents can’t teach their children without proper training and that without it. They also worry that students will not learn to socialize or function in society and that homeschooling is just a way to hide children from the real world. A lot of people fear homeschooling because they do not know very much about that form of education. On the other hand many peoples opinion is that homeschooling has many benefits and that it gives
Studies have shown year after year that homeschooled students consistently perform just as well as (or in many cases better than) traditionally schooled students on standardized academic exams. But very rarely does anyone ask why this is, or what caused the student to do so well, because they are usually too concerned with questions about the student’s social life or if they would be able to handle the transition into college. Therefore, my thesis statement is: Homeschooled students often achieve higher academic success and are more active in their communities than traditionally schooled students, due to a personalized approach to learning that emphasizes individuality. My research paper will debunk some popular myths about homeschooling, and give the real reasons why homeschoolers are so successful.
These activities allow time for the students to communicate and work together, as well as get to know each other. However teachers can also introduce the idea of tolerance through classroom novels. Although novels may not be able to bring the reality of tolerance to personal experience, it can still send a message to the students. Tolerance isn’t a subject we should leave out of the education curriculum instead it should be an everyday concept that is taught. Tolerance is “recognizing and respecting other’s beliefs and practices without making a negative impact about it” (Neufeldt 1994), which is a concept everyone needs to understand in order to work well with everyone around
