My goal as a writer is simple: write a paper that wants to be read. I know, every writer wants to be noticeable. They want fame, wealth and notoriety. But for me, I just want a paper that people would enjoy. As a writer I want to spark the passion of my reader, I want him/her to walk away and go “Wow I actually never thought of it like that”, or something like that. As I am right now, I am not at that level. I have not written a piece that I can truly be proud of, something that makes me feel that I, Adam, am a very good writer. But that is why I joined AP Lang and Comp: to help myself become a better writer. I feel that this class can help me in my journey to becoming a better writer. I first read the prompt and start to form an opinion or a certain belief towards the subject. Once I have this opinion, I use it to inspire me when I write an essay. It serves as my focal point and the backboard in which I can start, from there I can begin using examples in my life today that help support my belief. After I am done writing every detail that I have time for, I look through my essay and find where I made an obvious grammatical error, or somewhere in which I can improve upon my word choice. Now this is not the best way to write a paper, and I know that. But that is why I use other people’s opinion to help myself become a better writer. For example, in my EDM ( Ethical Decision Making ) essay, someone suggested that I should not start a sentence with the word “with”. When looking back through the essay, I realized that he/she was absolutely correct. So I went back and I fixed it. Now this is just one example, but it shows that I use other people’s opinion in order to help me become a better
Writing requires a delicate balance between pleasing an audience, yet finding and sticking true to personal perspectives. More often than not, people find themselves ignoring their own thoughts and desires and just following along with the crowd, not standing up and arguing for anything, leaving behind a wishy-washy essay because they are too scared to stray from the obligations to others before the obligation to themselves. I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
Admittedly, these are only a few of the skills I learned in Comp II. Academic writing is necessary to help me get to the next phase of my educational journey and I value the lessons I learned this semester. I found out that I do indeed belong here and I have the skills to move forward. I consider completing English Comp II as an extremely useful accomplishment that I can add to my toolbox.
Recently, I wrote an essay in my Pre-History Humantics class about why I felt Romans were inventors of culture versus maintainers of culture. I used comprehensive reading skills to analyze the text and provide examples on how I based my conclusion. When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
To achieve discretion, one must have an incredible amount of courage and a vast understanding of what can potentially be to his/her benefit or detriment. Sir Walter Scott, Scottish novelist and playwright once noted “Discretion is the perfection of reason, and a guide to us in all duties of life”. In essence, this quotes emphasizes that discretion or the lack there of, is not only a quality that can hinder ones ability to progress, but the ones around you as well. Breaking this quote into two separate portions, it captivates a more holistic meaning. “Discretion is the perfection of reason…” the understanding of consequences and the consequences that accompany certain actions.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
Writing is so much easier when you don’t have a ridiculous amount of guidelines you have to follow. With literary freedom, we are able to express ourselves more than if we have to follow a specific set of rules for every thing we write. This is one downfall for high school English. We have to order our papers in a specific sequence while writing about a topic that is chosen for us. This English composition class changed all of that. We were able to write about anything that related to the given type of essay, which greatly improved our ability to fully immerse ourselves into every paper. This greatly affected my writing thoughts about writing; they changed from hating to write for school to actually enjoying it because I was able to find new things about my self while deepening my knowledge for writing.
When many people write, including myself, they get attached to their writing. Although writing can be a personal thing, I’ve learned that it is important to step away from your paper, and take the feedback on an objective level. The first time I got feedback, I had an overwhelming urge to defend myself. I remember reading that my introduction wasn’t complete, and that my evidence wasn’t properly introduced. I wanted to walk up to those who critiqued my paper, and spit right in their faces. ‘How dare they say bad things about my paper?’ I thought to myself. From here, I went back into my essay, and looked at what they had told me were errors. It was then that I realized that they were right. My introduction needed more background information, and my evidence should have had more of an introduction. They weren’t trying to be mean; they were just helping me receive a better grade, by looking at my essay through an objective view. Now, I go out of my way to ask people for feedback, and tell them to be honest. I want my paper to be the very best it can be, so it isn 't helpful when people hold back. I now understand that those giving feedback aren’t insulting me, or the paper; they are just suggesting ways to improve, or enhance my ideas. Giving and receiving feedback is a hard, yet important skill to learn, and hope to continue improving in this
It is just the beginning but I like the class already because I love to write. Although, these may seem not seem like goals to others but they are my short term goals and no matter the obstacles that come in my way I am going to try my hardest to complete them. For the time that I started college some people would say that I am behind but I say it doesn’t matter when you graduate as long as you graduate. Although, I just change to a double major so I am not going to graduate anytime soon. My long term goals are to be a successful woman entrepreneurs. Being in college can be a long process but I feel like I can obtain that quicker than anything else I truly want. Once I graduate with a career opportunity job I can start taking the steps toward my long term
Stephen Westerholm’s most recent work, Justification Reconsidered: Rethinking a Pauline Theme, puts forth his aim “to update and to make more widely accessible earlier work I have done” (p. viii.4). This book does a fair amount to accomplish his goal in only 99 pages and will be a fairly easy read for the lay leader or rural pastor interested in this topic of discussion.
In final analysis, my writing has greatly improved during this semester, and having looked at the area's I most need to work on has given me an awareness of what my weaknesses are. Examining what I have learned and what I need to learn allows me to generate a strategy to fortify my writing skills. Critiquing my own work has given me insight into how my writing is progressing in this class and allowed me to see short comings I had missed previously. Self-evaluation is a helpful tool for anyone who wants to continue to learn what areas they can improve upon and how much progress they are making. I believe those who appraise their own work will have a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses then those who do not evaluate themselves.
At the beginning of the year, I was scared of Comp. Some friends, who had already taken the class, told me how hard it is going to be. They told me that there is a heavy workload and homework almost every night. Comp is a college class, so I knew it was going to take a great deal of effort to get a favorable grade. Coming in, I didn’t have very much experience writing essays on a college level. In previous years, I tried to take the easiest English class I could. I hated writing and tried to do the bare minimum to get by. I thought I wasn’t skilled enough at writing, and no one would want to read what I write. Taking Comp has helped me develop as a writer. There is a massive difference between my first essay and my last. Over the semester, my strengths have gotten stronger, my weaknesses have improved, and I have set goals for Comp 210.
My purpose as a writer is to make myself even more improved in my writing skills. I want to extend my vocabulary and learn how to make enhanced writing. I hope to accomplish making writing easier for me as a student. I want to learn what new things I'm capable of doing with writing short stories and essays. I'm trying to improve my writing so I can become college and workforce ready. My audience is my teacher. I know that my audience will guide me in the right direction in order to make my writing worth reading. My teacher will help my writing skills improve by telling me what I need to fix and what I need to improve. This will inform the choices I make by trying different things to make myself better. Listening to others advice about how to become better at writing will also inform the choices I make.
