My reaction to “Just Ask My Children” is one that was both shocking however expected all at the same time. To explain, I found it unbelievable how the family presented in the movie was treated; and to think that this was all based on something that really happened. The authorities acted so aggressively, barging into the home of the family and tearing the family apart. It seemed to be more of a guilty till proven innocent scenario, rather than the other way around as it should have been. The legal system didn’t manager to stop shocking me there however, it continued to even more when we saw people from the police department, as well as doctors pressure these young boys to commit to a crime that they did not commit! And yet even more shocking
[2] Missing is a rather confusing film to follow at first. Admittedly, I had to view it a few times to understand what was happening. Perhaps the initial feeling after seeing this film is confusion. However, after having watched it a second, fourth, eighth time, what I really felt was anger. Each time I watched the film, the anger and disgust would grow, so much so that it pained me to watch it again. However, in identifying the cause of my anger, I began to realize many things.
The deaths per year done by guns, 80% of them are gang related. If I Grow Up, written by Todd Strasser shows the life of a male kid growing up in the projects in Chicago. DeShawn wanted didn’t want to join the gang and stay in school. But his family didn’t have money or food. His friend that was in the gang had a bunch of money. So DeShawn joined the gang because in school they didn’t teach them much, and the money that his family got was a lot more of it when he got in the gang. I think that DeShawn had a choice not to join the gang because he could get a job, could have gotten a better education, and other people have gotten out of the projects.
This brings about another issue: children’s protection from this kind of content. More needs to be done to protect children’s eyes from inappropriate things on the TV, billboards, music, and other forms of media. Unfortunately, because society has gone as far as it has today, it will be very difficult to take a step back and re examine the effects violent media will have on children. People seem to care less and less about what children see. The need for protection from this type of content relies solely on the parents. Parents must take it upon themselves to guard their children against things on the media that they should not be seeing. Parents should be given different options with technology to help monitor the content their kids are allowed to see and what they are
The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
The incident exemplifies a pressing issue in the ever-topical discussion of the oft-vilified film rating classification system in our country. Is the movie rating system, originally designed to assist parents in guiding the movie-going habits of their children, actually preempting parental choice?
I sat across from Helen and watched as she got her packet while I got a single piece of paper. It only took one page to say “I’m sorry, but your writing was not selected.” Helen’s packet took multiple pages to reminder her parents to sign their permission for the publishing of her essay. Helen’s story got in and mind didn’t. In retrospect, mine didn’t deserve to get in. Why? In an overzealous state to write an epic, I took what was originally 2 pages and turned it into six pages of unnecessary details, overcomplicated world structure, and random vocabulary in a classic freshman attempt to sound intelligent. It didn’t work.
The chapter “Clarify What’s Important to you” introduces several successful leaders and many praiseworthy values to me. Although each leader comes from different environments and possesses different characters, all of them keep their precious values in mind and persist in chasing their ideal lives. Even if each value can be interpreted by different meanings, they all lead encourage individuals to become better.
Men and women have always contrasted in the way they communicate, and when it comes to dads, there is even more of an enigma. Thankfully Deborah Tannen a Georgetown linguistics professor tackled the roots of why the difference occurs. In the article “Why Dad’s Don’t Talk” Tannen states women are the chief communicators in a household: therefore dads are not comfortable having conversations of strong emotions. This lack of comfort is exacerbated by the fact that most men believe they should not show weak emotions. The conversational styles of men, which are brought to light by Tannen are invoked in the film Men of Honor.
I sat down with my wife Marina and brother-in-law Anthony to watch this movie. While I watched the movie I noticed my wife reaction when she would see graphic scenes such as Precious being raped by her father and her mother throwing her new born to the ground. She became angry that parents could be so cruel to their children. My wife could not believe that a mother could not show any affection to her daughter. She thought the violence was inhumane and unforgiving. Her reaction is based on her personal experience, she is a mother of two and has experience with violence when she was a child. She liked the movie because she wants to become a social worker and it showed all the components a child abuse case goes through. The social worker interviews both mother and daughter to determine whether the abuse Precious is experiencing, the home visitation social workers conduct to determine the child’s well-being. Anthony thought the movie was pointless. He did not understand the purpose of the film. He would laugh at the scene when Precious was knock down by her mother and bullies around her neighborhood. He teased her when she went into the restaurant to steal a bucket of chicken, calling her fat. He did condemn the violence, stating that no one should be raped or abused by their parents but he did not like the film. Our judgement is different because of our knowledge in the subject of violence. My wife is a college student with social work as her major. She has clear understanding of what encompasses violence because of the classes she has taken. Anthony is a sixteen year old senior in high school. He is immature and lacks knowledge in the subject of family
Edward Joseph Snowden is a former CIA technician, Booz Allen Hamilton's former employee, and a former NSA defense contractor. Edward Snowden had leaked a secret of NSA through an interview with Glenn Greenwald from The Guardian which startled the world. In his disclosure, Snowden revealed about NSA that they are mining data works all along and secretly monitoring U.S. citizens' personal information by accessing through different servers.
The Criminal Justice System is made up of several different process law enforcement, judiciary, and corrections this system is where the accused individual are tried and punished for the crime they are charged with. The depiction of criminal justice system in throughout each process (police, courts, and correctional) has become ubiquitous on television today. Shows that give a visual of the arresting and investigation process (law enforcement) are the televisions shows “Cops” and “The First 48 Hours”. The show “Cops” is a television series that follows police officers, constables and sheriff deputies around during their patrol and other policing activity (Cops, n.d). Showing the officer enforcing the laws of the land, apprehend offenders, reducing and prevent crimes, maintain public order, provide emergency and related community services and more” (Schmalleger F., 2014). The “Cops” show conveys the initial stage of the law enforcement. The images or positive (in my opinion) when it comes to showing the actual community services the law enforcers provide. This allow police to become more integrated in to the communities. Reducing the amount of fear toward the particular criminal justice profession. It has change the outlook on policing in the communities and enhances the level of trust from the communities for law enforcement. This allows for a sufficient reduction and prevent crimes when law enforcement and the people of the community come together. “The First 48 Hour” is a show that shows the criminal justice process from the crime, arrest, to the investigation stages in the criminal justice process. This show follows detectives around from the state of their investigation (right after a crime occurs...
Between upbeat and depressing the film documentary, Can You Dig This, by Delila Vallot; was an up and down wild ride showcasing the what urban gardening is doing for one community. The city of Compton in southern California is mostly filled with poverty. People struggle to keep jobs and maintain food and a roof over their head. I couldn't imagine trying to find a zen place in the midst of the troubles in this community. The film used both narrative and music analogies to make it more like a light hearted gangster story.
“Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” is a simple song, but the lyrics make it very powerful and really touch your heart. Based during the Great Depression era, this song was written about the struggle that the song writer went through just to get a job and to survive. Some of the jobs he mentions are working on the railroad, building dams, etc. Just by looking at the title, we can already learn quite a bit. He uses the word “Brother”, which seems to be referring to the people he is asking for help. He calls them his “brothers" because he knows that they are going through the same struggle that he is. But, because he is so desperate, he still feels like he needs to ask them for their help. Now, we can look at “Can you spare a dime?”. I believe that
Kindness is something America had and something that we lost. We can be so kind to someone yet the next day be so cruel to them. Like what happened in the story With a Little Help From my Friends by Firoozeh Dumas. In a quote from the passage “We remember the kindness more than ever, knowing that our relatives who immigrated to this country after the Iranian Revolution did not encounter the same America.” ( Dumas pg 92)
This film really focuses on the characters. Their thoughts, anger, distress, and mistakes become part of your mistakes. This deals with a father’s s priority and how he will achieve that priority by using unethical ways like torturing an innocent man. Bringing up child abduction and torture are
