Jury Duty Essay

527 Words2 Pages

Whenever a dispute arises between individuals or between an individual and the government or whenever an individual offends the general will of the people by breaking the law, a solution must be found that is in harmony with the principles of our society. A trial is a widely recognized means for settling such disputes. There are usually eight stages of a trial. Firstly, the lawyers present opening statements. Second, the plaintiff calls witnesses and produces evidence to prove its case. Next, the defendant may call witnesses and produce evidence to disprove the plaintiff’s case and to prove the defendant’s claims. Fourthly, the plaintiff may call rebuttal witnesses to disprove what the defendant’s witnesses said. Then, the closing arguments are made by the lawyer on each side followed by the judge instructing the jury of the charges at hand. The jury then deliberates and decides a verdict. Each role in a trial is equally important in providing equal justice under the law but the jury has one of the highest responsibilities of making a fair decision on behalf of the defendant.
