Junk food is a contemptuous slang term for the food that is of minute value of nutrition. This kind of food is usually high in sugar, calories, salt, and fat. The fast food and junk foods characteristically comprise of high levels of calories from fat or sugar with diminutive minerals, proteins, and vitamins. Generally, the foods that are considered as junk foods comprise of candy, gum, fried fast foods, salted snack foods, sugary carbonated beverages, and sweet desserts.
A number of foods like the tacos, hamburgers, and pizza can be regarded as either junk food or healthy depending on their methods of preparation and ingredients. Usually items that are more highly processed are considered as junk food or fall in the category of fast food. The category of junk food also depends on the social status and class of the person eating it (Farsab). In this manner, the wealthier people tend to have a wide-ranging definition of the junk food. On the other hand, people having lower income may consider less number of foods as fast and junk food particularly ethnic foods.
The nutrition of fast food should make up a negligible and smallest part of a healthy and well diet. The junk foods and fast foods are very high in sodium, fat, and sugar. These kinds of foods can lead to obesity and a number of attendant dilemmas of health which includes the arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease (Cobb, 2006). Over the last three decades, fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society and has become nothing less than a revolutionary force in American life. Fast food has gained a great popularity among different age groups in different parts of the globe, becoming a favorite delicacy of both adults and children.
Throughout the United States, concern of rising health issues is a popular topic. Over a progression of many years, American fast food chains and junk food companies have risen as a common means for food replacing homemade family meals.
