Flattery will get you nowhere. At the beginning of the story this quote might appear to be false, but as the story unfolds it only leads to the down fall of all involved. Throughout Julius Caesar, both friends and enemies use flattery and manipulation to obtain their goals.
The first main use of flattery is used by Cassius on Brutus in Act 1, Scene 2 and in Act 2, Scene 1. Cassius tries his hardest to force Brutus to join the revolt against Caesar, but Brutus resists, stating his loyalty and faithfulness to Rome. However, after Brutus accidentally blurts out, “I do fear the people choose Caesar as their king.” Cassius continues his pursuit to convince Brutus to join the conspirators. He thinks the best way to flatter Brutus is by talking about how noble the plebeians view him. Cassius chooses to send Brutus a letter supposedly from a Roman citizen. It boldly states “Brutus, thou sleep’st. Awake, and see thyself! Shall Rome, etc. Speak, strike, and redress!” These words persuade him to join the conspirators because he prides how high the public views him and does not want to let them down. Cassius swayed Brutus by complementing him and saying the people depend on him. Without flattering, his nobility Brutus would probably never have joined the conspirators.
In Act 2 Scene 2, there is thunderstorm outside and Caesar’s wife is having a nightmare about her husband’s death. She dreamt that smiling Romans were washing their hands in Caesar's blood. When she awakes, she tells Caesar who tries to calm her by sending the augurers to make a sacrifice. However, the results of the sacrifice do not comfort him, “They could not find a heart within the beast.” When Decius Brutus comes to take him to the senate, Caesar declares that he will stay home. Caesar tells him about Calphurnia's dreams; Decius Brutus cleverly gives them a flattering interpretation by “This dream is all misinterpreted. It was a vision fair and fortunate. Your statue spouting blood in many pipes, in which so many smiling Romans bathed, signifies that from you great Rome shall suck reviving blood.” Decius also says that the members of the senate are planning to crown him today, but they might rethink it if the found out he stayed at home due to his wife’s dreams. Decius toyed with Caesar’s pride by flattering him; he caused Caesar to change his mind and go to the senate to be murdered.
Cassius, a very suspicious character throughout the play tells Brutus to “be not jealous on me” (827), in the quote he tells Brutus to not be suspicious of him because he is just a friend who genuinely cares. Cassius does this to put himself on Brutus’ side and not seem like a distant person, this allows him to criticize Caesar and suggest that he is a bad influence on Rome which appeals to Brutus’ desire to keep Rome safe. After setting himself up as a friend to Brutus, Cassius uses harsh anecdotes on the weakness of Caesar to show that he isn’t fit to rule Rome. Cassius recollects a time when he and Caesar went swimming in the river Tiber and Caesar screamed “Help me, Cassius or I sink” (828) to depict Caesar as a little baby compared to the colossus he is said to be.... ... middle of paper ...
Who would have been the best suited leader of Rome in sixth century B.C.? Many believe it could have been Marcus Antonius, Marcus Brutus, or the great Julius Caesar. Marcus Brutus is known to be the most honorable man in Rome at the time and was well respected. Caesar is the ruler and has a successful military. He also seeks wealth and power. Antony is Caesar’s right hand man and good friend. He later acquires the position that Caesar had and also seeks wealth and power. All three men are after the job, but Brutus is obviously the one who was most suited for it and also the only one who never got the chance.
Many enforcers were careful on not being caught in the act of their deviance, which allows them to go unnoticed and not properly face the consequences of their actions. According the textbook,
Marc Antony’s compliment is very powerful and it makes the plebeians feel useful. Brutus uses the imperative in his speech. This makes him feel superior and in control of the crowd:
Cassius persuades and flatters Brutus. Cassius knows that Caesar would do harm to Rome if he became leader. Brutus would be a powerful force in the conspirator's movement to kill Caesar before Caesar becomes king and destroys Rome. Cassius really needs Brutus on his side, so in order to persuade Brutus, he uses lots of flattery. Whenever Cassius talks to Brutus he throws in "good Brutus", "gentle Brutus" or "dear Brutus" to make Brutus feel comfortable and confident. He also uses overlooked flattery when speaking to Brutus. Cassius realizes all his sweet talk has done well when he responds to Brutus with "I am glad/That my weak words have struck but thus much show of fire from Brutus" (I, ii, 8). By this, he means that his words have lit a flame, or triggered a though in "the great" Brutus's head.
Cassius chooses to compliment Brutus in order to get what he wants. He wants Brutus to join his conspiracy against Caesar so he uses flattery as a manipulation to gauge Brutus. “That you might see your shadow. I have heard where many of the best respect in Rome.” (I.2.55) Cassius tells Brutus that he is very well known and loved in Rome and suggests that the people are clamoring for Brutus to lead Rome instead of Caesar. By saying “respect” Cassius is referring to his reputation. By saying “shadow” he is also referring to the “reflection” of what others think of him. “Have wished that noble Brutus had his eyes.” (I.2.55) Cassius mentions words such as “noble” to compliment the vulnerable Brutus by stroking his ego. “O, you and I have heard our fathers say. There was a Brutus once that would have brooked Th' eternal devil to keep his state in Rome. As easily as a king.” (I.2.161) This refers to an ancestor of Brutus’s who, in the sixth century B.C. helped to expel the last king from Rome and set up the Republic. Cassius reminds Brutus that his own ancestors were responsible for founding the Roman republic. This manipulative phrase flatters Brutus and convin...
Friendship is a wonderful part of life, but it can unfortunately be used to deceive, for it is easy to manipulate with it, but only true friendship cannot be defeated, even after death. This element could well likely be the very thing that had sealed the fate of Julius Caesar, and Brutus, Cassius, and all the other conspirators knew that they could use this to their advantage, and to Caesar’s disadvantage. Friendship, was what the conspirators used as a cover to blind Caesar from the truth, just as a hunter uses camouflage to keep the animals from seeing what he is up to. The conspirators also used camouflage, but they used flattery along with manipulation as a way to soothe any feelings of doubt that Caesar may have had about their sincerity. These essentials would gain trust, which is the key to all friendships.
In William Shakespeare's play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, two speeches are given to the people of Rome about Caesar's death. In Act 3, Scene 2 of this play Brutus and Antony both try to sway the minds of the Romans toward their views. Brutus tried to make the people believe he killed Caesar for a noble cause. Antony tried to persuade the people that the conspirators committed an act of brutality toward Caesar and were traitors. The effectiveness and ineffectiveness of both Antony's and Brutus's speech to the people are conveyed through tone and rhetorical devices.
Cassius, an envious and ambitious man, did not approve of what Caesar was doing as ruler and believed that he had too much power over the senate and the people. To put an end to what he considered to be conspiracy, he fabricated a plan to eradicate Caesar. He attempted to persuade Brutus, one of Caesar’s good friends, to join their plot, but Brutus declined. Cassius, speaking of the decision Brutus made not to unite with them, told the other conspirators in the senate, “for who so firm that cannot be seduced?” He wanted to manipulate Brutus into joining their cause, therefore he and the other conspirators threw letters they wrote, pretending to be citizens, into Brutus’ window. (Shakespeare 12) When Brutus read these, he thought they were from citizens and was deceived into uniting with Cassius and the conspiring senators. Little did he know that the letters were not from the citizens, but were forgeries. He was only joining Cassius because he wanted to give the people what they wanted. This was a prime example of manipulation through both friends and documents. Brutus' friends used letters or do...
