Over the past few years, no one in tennis has been as dominant as Novak Djokovic. With his title at the French Open earlier this year, Djokovic completed his career Grand Slam collection. Beyond even the Grand Slam is the Golden Slam, which includes winning the four grand slam events (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open), as well as an Olympic gold medal in the same season. Djokovic entered the Olympics as the No. 1 seed and a heavy favorite to accomplish a career Golden Slam. However, in his first round match, the Serbian ran into the brick wall that is Juan Martin del Potro and his otherworldly forehand. In what was a rematch of the bronze medal match from the 2012 games in London, del Potro again defeated Djokovic, keeping the No. 1 ranked player in the world off the podium for the second straight Olympics. Del Potro won the best of three sets match in Rio de Janeiro in two tiebreakers, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2). Throughout the match, del Potro’s forehand was supersonic, and Djokovic, try as he might, couldn’t come up with an answer for it. After the ball hits the ground, it bounces off the court so quickly that it greatly lessened Djokovic’s reaction time. As lanky as he is, standing at 6-feet-6 inches, del Potro moves to his forehand side well and can still generate tremendous power at a full sprint. In the second tiebreaker alone, del Potro won the first three points, two of which came on Djokovic’s serve via forehand rockets that passed the world No. 1 for winners.
