Many people discover that their true happiness is most often found at home. John C. Lange adapted “Joshua in a Box”, a short animated video, uncovered this remarkable theme. Joshua, a humanized creature, longs for his own freedom away from home where he feels he is trapped. Once he escaped, he enjoys his freedom for awhile, but then realizes it was better inside the box or at home. The story conveys the theme that people do not realize that true happiness is found at home. Joshua saw his opportunity to escape when he saw a crack in the box. The crack symbolized Joshua’s way out away from the nest of his parents. It displayed that there was hope for Joshua to break away from the restraints of his parents. He knew that it was chance to fly
away and lay the making of his own nest somewhere else. Although, he did not know that his happiness remained in the nest within his parents. After escaping the box, otherwise known as his parents nest, Joshua bagan to feel homesick. A tear rolled down his eye. The tear symbolized Joshua missing home. At that point, he realized that true happiness is found at home. At first, he thought he was ready to handle the obstacles that erupted outside of the box. He soon discovered that he was happier in the nest with the restraints of his parents. Once Joshua uncovered the stake of his happiness, he then became the box. He became his own restraints in order to live them out and show him why he was not ready to prow outside the nest. By doing this, he was going to learn how his happiness is dictated by being th4e box. The box was also going to protect him just as his parents along with restraints did. Joshua was learning the route of his happiness and how it flowed.
In contrast to Aristotle, Roko Belic’s documentary “Happy” provides a fresh perspective that takes place far more recently. The film sets out to similar goals of Aristotle in defining the nature of happiness and exploring what makes different people happy in general. Unlike Aristotle, however, the film’s main argument refers to makes people happier. In this case, the film argues that merely “doing what you love” is what leads to happiness (Belic). The argument itself appears oddly self-serving, considering that message is what underlines the foundation of happiness, yet there is a subliminal message that a simpler lifestyle is what leads to what the film is trying to convince you of. Often times in our life, we may come across a lifestyle of a character from a fictional book, movie or tv show, that is different than our owns. It could be a life that we would dream to have or a life that we could not possibly imagine having. Focusing on the childhood aspects of a lifestyle, my young self would often compare my childhood to the protagonist in one my favorite cartoons (“Fairly Odd Parents”) Timmy Turner. Timmy’s childhood was a lifestyle that enthralled me from how similar yet different it was from my own.
Happy is a documentary that brings to light the different types of livings of people around the world and contrasts how they define happiness. The movie starts out in Kolkata Slum, India, with a man Manoj Singh. Manoj is living a relatively impoverished life. His house isn’t the best, in fact the roof is just a tarp however he says “my home is good.” Manoj is quite happy with his life and it’s not because of his minimal possessions but the community around him. His happiness lies in the fact that he can see his son smiling every day and he is so grateful for his neighbors and friends. He even states himself that he doesn’t consider himself as “poor but the richest person.” Manoj’s happiness is described as the same as the average American.
“Home” is not just a place or thing; it represents where you feel the most safe and secure, where you feel accepted or feel a part of a community, and where you overall feel you belong. However, home can also be the thing that shelters you from the outside world, leaving you unprepared to deal with situations and dangers outside your knowledge. Often in children’s stories, the character must leave their place of security and go on a journey. This is because to grow as a person you must leave what is safe and familiar and venture into the unknown to truly test yourself, and be able to return home with new knowledge and perspective.. This essay will focus on two characters who go through this transformation from leaving their ‘homes’; Bilbo and his hobbit hole in Bags-End, and Meggie and her father, Mo, and her beloved books. Both are attached to their ‘homes’, and feel anxious and lonely without them, Bilbo's and Meggie's journeys are how, when seperated from their homes, they perservere through their insecurities and doubt and become stronger and more self-reliant by the end of their respected texts.
The home in which a child lives in is suppose to be a place of warmth, love, and protection. A home also offers other important aspects into a child’s life, for instance, self-confidence, pride, and security. If a child does not reside in a home that offers warmth, love, and protection, that child will not feel good about herself or the home in which she lives in. A child wants a home that he or she can be proud of enough to bring home a friend or two. In addition, if a child does not feel safe and secure in his or her home, then she will not posses these qualities in the outside world. Moreover, their lack of security can cause major disruptions and distractions within their everyday routine, like with Sandra. For example, the homes that Lena and Sandra live in illustrate the exact opposite of each other.

The Strugatsky’s 1972 book Roadside Picnic ends with a single wish: “Happiness for Everyone, for Free, and don’t leave anybody out!”. Spoken by Red, a wish for happiness captures the idea of a dystopia, as ironic as it sounds. As a stalker, Red collects artifacts in a dangerous ‘Zone’ left behind by a brief alien visit that did not contact humanity. The visit and the Zone reveal the insignificance of humanity, yet the humans focus instead on the strange artifacts left behind.
