Oxford Dictionary defines a hero as “A person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” In The Great Gatsby, it’s easy to say that F. Scott Fitzgerald argues that Nick would be the real “hero” of the novel. Nick is the main character per say being the narrator, but Nick doesn’t qualify for those attributes. Jordan isn’t a main character, but she follows those guidelines, and fits the definition much more than Nick Carraway does. She goes against all the social and gender norms. She’s ambitious, unique, witty, and her independence rather than codependency is what sets her apart from all the other characters in The Great Gatsby.

According to how Jordan is described in the novel, she is a very strong, direct, and cynical, other than the other women. Even though she was characterized with lots of negative traits like, being a reckless driver, she stands out as independent. “It takes two to make an accident.” is how she responds in regards to Nick talking about her reckless driving. You could tell that Nick was attracted to her due to her carefree and entitled attitude. An example of her wit would be when she says “It’s a great advantage not to drink among hard-drinking people.” This was her way at suggesting to Daisy that her life isn’t so great and perfect as everyone else believes. Jordan is also very ambitious. She’s excited for the open possibilities and opportunities that life could hand her. She says "Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall." She is self-sufficient and carefree, she also doesn’t feel the need to attach herself to another man like Daisy did. Her dishonesty, recklessness and bluntness added to her charm and independent …show more content…
They were the women ‘rebels’ of their time. Since it was so rare for women to be independent and to not obey gender norms, the women who did disdain to what was considered “acceptable behavior” at the time, they were categorized as what they called flappers. Jordan would be considered a flapper due to her different behavior in the book. Shes described as having a rebellious personality, and she doesn’t fall under any of the gender norms as many of the other girls do. Being an independent woman, and being a flapper or going against social norms was an abnormal thing during the 20’s due to circumstances, that it just makes Jordan stand out even more than she does
Flappers were not just spunky young rebellious woman who tried to defy there mother’s traditions and cause an uproar in society. Her bluntness about sexuality created a new emotional and sexual culture for women. It also created a new foundation for male and female courtship. They showed women around the world that being submissive could only harm the remarkable female. The flappers created a new youth identity.
Now this was the first time Jordan and Nick came into contact with one another, and it is said that the first impressions are extremely important. However, for a strong moral person like Nick, his reaction is surprising when he simply states, "I enjoyed looking at her."(pg. 27 ln 23)This is a sign of his first stages of development, which will soon result into what the author intended.
While The Great Gatsby is a highly specific portrait of American society during the Roaring Twenties, its story is also one that has been told hundreds of times, and is perhaps as old as America itself: a man claws his way from rags to riches, only to find that his wealth cannot afford him the privileges enjoyed by those born into the upper class. The central character is Jay Gatsby, a wealthy New Yorker of indeterminate occupation. Gatsby is primarily known for the lavish parties he throws every weekend at his ostentatious Gothic mansion in West Egg. He is suspected of being involved in illegal bootlegging and other underworld activities.
Everyone has their own perception on what defines a hero; some may argue that they exhibit characteristics such as honesty or courage, while others may think that heroes have special power. Our society may have changed the values in which we associate heroes with, but one thing seems to have never changed: the main character of the book turns out as the hero. In my analyst, Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye, is put on trial as we see through our own eyes how Caulfield can not be considered a hero in modern society. In modern society, we would consider a hero as a role model, and someone who we would want to emulate.
The Outsiders by SE Hinton is a great coming-of-age novel that is about gangs, violent but also at the same time about love and brother ship. In the book, the society suddenly thinks the greasers, Pony, Johnny and Dally, are heroes. That really got me thinking. What is a hero?
A hero is defined as "someone admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities". There are three categories to which all heroes can be classified into, one of which is the anti-hero genre.
In conclusion, Jay Gatsby is a magnificence character throughtout the story because of his modest beliefs, genuwine heart, and generous will. A hero is often a man that is usually of divine ancestry. In the story The Great Gatsby, Gatsby’s reach to become a hero not only for the wealth, but for the true love. Gatsby is the great hero in this story because of his elegant figure that rule over one person’s life, which is Nick Carroway.
A Hero’s Journey can be used to describe most stories, even ones that don’t seem like they really have a true hero. In “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott. Fitzgerald, yes the story is told by an allie and not the hero, Gatsby. He lives in 1920’s America, where new money is rising and old money is standing strong. It is also a post world war era, where many young adults had just fought in the war. The story contains all the main components of a traditional Hero’s Journey. Gatsby goes through this journey that focuses on his quest, the supreme ordeal, and in the end the restoring the two worlds.
Some women of the 1920s rebelled against being traditional. These women became known as flappers and impacted the post-war society. People in the 1920’s couldn’t make up their minds about flappers. Some were against them and some were with them. Therefore, some people in the 1920’s loved and idolized flappers, I on the other hand, believed that they were a disgrace to society. These women broke many rules leading young women to rebel against their families.
According to Aristotle, there are a number of characteristics that identify a tragic hero: he must cause his own downfall; his fate is not deserved, and his punishment exceeds the crime; he also must be of noble stature and have greatness. These are all characteristics of Jay Gatsby, the main character of Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a tragic hero according to Aristotle's definition.
... such as lying, playing sports and cheating. Fitzgerald includes Jordan to break the pattern of social conformity of the women of the 1920’s.
Many writings use Lord Byron’s term, the “Byronic Hero”. An example of a Byronic Hero is shown in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Byronic Hero in this novel is Jay Gatsby. He is separated from society, lonely and possesses rebel features, as his job deals with illegal activities and he does not have any friends besides Nick Carraway. Jay Gatsby is a Byronic Hero in terms of him being an attractive male with an admirable personality, being intelligent but also self-centered, being emotionally sensitive, and having an intense drive and determination to live out his philosophy.
Jordan's androgynous name and cool, collected style masculinize her more than any other female character. However, in the end, Nick does exert his dominance over her by ending the relationship. The women in the novel are an interesting group, because they do not divide into the traditional groups of Mary Magdalene and Madonna figures, instead, none of them are pure. Myrtle is the most obviously sensual, but the fact that Jordan and Daisy wear white dresses only highlights their corruption.
A hero is considered to be any man noted for courage or nobility of Purpose; especially, one who has risked or sacrificed his life. In Ken Kesey's novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the reader can see how McMurphy is a prime example of a hero. McMurphy's strength embodies a heroic devotion to the other acutes on the ward.
A hero is defined as: A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities (Oxford). This definition can be altered to incorporate many perspectives of a ‘hero’. Two person’s idea of a hero may be similar, but the exact identity in their respective perspectives will vary. In my opinion all it takes is an average man laying a coat across a shivering child on the streets to make the leap from average to hero. Forrest Gump is a hero because he takes the extra step, exceeds everyone’s expectations of him, such as when he was young and got his leg brace stuc...
