In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the women show their power and freedom. These women include Jordan Baker, Daisy Buchanan, and Myrtle Wilson. Daisy has a rich husband, Myrtle has a poor husband, and Jordan is rich by herself.
The novel is set in a time period when women are becoming more important in society, following the nineteenth amendment. One of the characters that demonstrate this is Jordan Baker. She is a single, wealthy woman who is liked by many guys. Although she is an immoral character as she tends to lie and cheat in order to get what she wants, she still demonstrates how a woman can be powerful and does not need to have a man in her life. She rushes into marriage with the man that she did not truly love. At the time, she was only interested in the idea of his money and his wealth, but not his personality. So, she is trapped and does not have many methods of expressing her freedom and independence, but she has grown for this choice of marriage that she made, grown smarter and more knowledgeable of the world. It is shown in the quote "All right, I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”(Fitzgerald 16). She knows what the world is like and knows that women are not given all the opportunities that they deserve, so she would want this child to not have to learn that and have to deal with the struggles of life. Although she is trapped, she does her best at showing her independence from Tom. One way that she does this is by continuing to see Gatsby even though she is a married woman. She does not feel very guilty about it either because she is doing it for herself and for her own happiness, not just doing what was previously expected of women which would be to raise a family and keep their family and husband
