In 1729, Jonathan swift wrote his satire essay “A Modest Proposal” about the political and economic crisis in Ireland. Swift’s proposal was to take the children of the “beggars of the female sex” (314) and treat them as a food source, such as cattle. He goes into detail on the rearing and breading of the livestock. Swift also goes in to the sale and preparation of such a delicacy. This essay argues that Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest proposal” utilizes satire in order to speak out against the issues of poverty in Ireland during the eighteenth century. A satire is the “use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people 's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues” (OED) to reveal or shame. Satire is used as a way for people to deal with problems and inequalities that are to big to deal with head on. Satire is a way of expression, that makes it easier to respond to the issues existence, while denying the issues hold on the emotions. Satire also brings the attention of social issues to people that might ignore them otherwise. It also points out the faults of society and gets people to critics’ things they may take for granted. Again, satire involves exaggeration to reveal or shame concerns. This aspect of satire is seen when Swift writes that he “believe no Gentleman would repine to give Ten Shillings for the Carcass of a good fat Child which, as I have said will make four Dishes of excellent Nutritive Meat” (swift 316), this would allow the Mother earn “have Eight Shillings neat profit, and be fit for Work till she produceth another Child” (316). Swift’s statement was to address the economic issues. By buying and selling child as a food source this would help with two problems that Ireland is dealing with. First by selling the children it would put money back into the pockets of the people.
