In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the main character Jonas changed in many different ways because of The Giver and the memories that The Giver gave to him. At the beginning of the novel, Jonas lived in a community where everything was the same, and where everyone acted in the same way. Families and jobs were assigned to people, and there was no past or memories of the past that the public even knew about. In the book, Jonas is assigned the job of ‘Receiver of Memory.’ This job is full of honor and the person who holds this job is responsible for keeping the memories and remembering the past for the community.
