14. Jointmanship is an indispensable ally to the mechanics of war fighting since the yester years. These concepts have evolved from trench to hybrid warfare along with the development of weapon technology since industrial revolution. Jointmanship has been in existence since the birth of warfare but it has been too limited in its scope due to its limited nature, resources and ideas i.e being confined to geographical limits, seasons etc. If we relate jointmanship to the lowest level it is same as that of basic infantry tactics of fire and move with wide coverage and more sophisticated area. ‘Jointness’ or ‘Jointmanship’ is not a word in Concise Oxford Dictionary. However, a definition coined at DSSC in 2001 explains Jointmanship as, “Integrated planning and application of military power at the strategic, operational and tactical levels, with proper sequencing of combat power of the three Services in time and space.” Good jointmanship will result from proper joint training, understanding of each other’s capabilities and limitations and mutual trust, confidence and respect for each other.

16. The concept of jointness focuses on inter-service cooperation for synchronisation or synergy of all components of military power to achieve a common military aim. It is characterised by trust and confidence, mutual respect for each other’s capability and synergy rather than competition. It must be appreciated that war and associated operational issues as stated above are primarily the concern of the Armed Forces as a whole and not of individual Services. War is not, and must not be a zero-sum game amongst the Services, because no individual service by itself can achieve the objectives or be a gainer or loser.
